A Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee meeting ended abruptly Monday after a confrontation took place between committee head Shaul Mofaz (Kadima) and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Mofaz stopped the meeting after he received information that the Prime Minister’s Office had falsely briefed journalists by claiming that Mofaz had stated that IDF Chief Benny Gantz lied during a discussion on the security budget.

During the meeting, Mofaz accused the Prime Minister’s Office of “wronging the media,” and said it is “unimaginable that [Netanyahu’s] advisers will throw in such a wrong utterance by someone who has previously served as IDF chief.”

According to an eyewitness account, Mofaz stood over Netanyahu and yelled at him. Netanyahu responded by telling Mofaz he was “quickly losing his head” and that Netanyahu did not instruct his team to send out the message. Mofaz answered that he was not willing to continue, and the meeting was stopped.

At the end of the discussion, Mofaz held a press conference where he attacked Netanyahu, calling him a “liar” who did what no prime minister had ever done.

“[Netanyahu] lies when it comes to economics, he lies to young Israelis when it comes to the peace process. And today he lies when it comes to the most sensitive issues in the security system. Israeli citizens must know that they have a lying prime minister.”
