Israeli man suspected of stabbing wife to death, attempts self-immolation
Two of the Beit She'an couple's three children were in the family apartment at the time of the stabbing.
A Beit She'an resident allegedly stabbed his wife to death on Sunday night and subsequently tried to set himself on fire, but was stopped by police.
The incident took place around midnight in the family apartment, in the northern part of the city. The man, aged 36, allegedly stabbed his wife, also 36, in the upper body and then fled the apartment.
A Magen David Adom medical team arrived at the scene, but despite resuscitation attempts the woman's death was confirmed at the apartment.
Officers from the Beit She'an police station located the suspect at a cemetery close to the neighborhood, near route 90. When police saw him, the man poured a flammable liquid over his body and tried to set himself on fire, but police officers managed to douse the fire. The suspect was taken to Haemek Hospital in Afula, where he is said to be moderately injured.
Two of the couple's three children, aged 9, 12 and 14, were in the apartment at the time of the incident, according to police. The third child attends a boarding school and was not present at the time.
Six years ago, the woman complained to police that her husband had been violent. Beit She'an police investigated that incident, and an indictment was served against the husband. After further evaluation, the prosecution decided to drop the case. Since then, the woman made no further complaints to police.
In a similar incident three years ago, another Beit She'an resident, 44-year-old Yitzhak Buchbut, stabbed to death his wife Revital, 35, in front of two of their seven children.
