IDF rabbinate edits out Dome of the Rock from picture of Jerusalem’s Temple Mount
Photo appears in army packet on Hanukkah describing the Jewish revolt against Hellenistic rule; IDF spokesman: Image meant to illustrate a period in which holy Muslim site did not exist.
By Gili Cohen Tags: IDF JerusalemIsrael’s military rabbinate released an educational document ahead of the holiday of Hanukkah last month, featuring a photo of Jerusalem’s Temple Mount without the Dome of the Rock, Haaretz learned on Thursday.
The photo was featured in a packet prepared by the Military Rabbinate issued to Israel Defense Forces bases ahead of Hanukkah, under the section titled “The Festival of Jewish Heroism,” which included an article and a quiz on the Jewish struggle against Hellenistic rule.

One reserves officer talking with Haaretz said that when he “received the materials from the battalion rabbi something seemed strange about that picture.”
“We get material from the rabbinate every week and it’s mostly positive things,” the IDF officer said, adding that the edited picture was part of an “official release, which is why it’s problematic the army is distributing it.”
The IDF Spokesman’s Office said in the response that Haaretz’s description was “absurd and biased, a fact which we can only regret,” adding that the educational packet included a photo meant to illustrate Jerusalem during the period of the Second Temple.

“As was explained to the reporter, the Dome of the Rock did not exist at that time, so there was no need for it to appear in the picture,” the IDF said.
Speaking with Haaretz, the reserves officer said he expected “the Military Rabbinate to be more alert about the educational messages it passes on, especially considering the Temple Mount’s history,” adding: “A world war could break if someone would try to do something about that place, and I think they should be more cautious when approaching the subject.”
“It’s infuriating that the rabbinate isn’t more being more responsible about this,” the officer added.

The way I was taught Live an let Live, let Jesus Christ sort them out ,he can
How is the picture more authentic by Photoshopping the Dome of the Rock out? It's still a picture of Jerusalem from the 16th cent. onward with its walls and buildings. And is the military rabbinate really trying to say the Al Aqsa Mosque was present in Jerusalem during the Maccabean revolt?
Clearly this is fantasy for the future, not nostalgia about the past.
And why is the recently renovated plaza doing if it's a picture from Hasmonean times?
The picture is not a perfect one and your right the plaza should not be there as that was built after 1967 but despite the mistakes you can still tell from the basic picture its supposed to show what Jerusalem looked like in Second Temple era when the Hanuka story took place and considering islam itself wasn't around at that time then why should we expect there to be a mosque? This is nothing but an attempt to stir up trouble because a painting was done to represent what Jerusalem looked like in Hasmonean days and the Macabees drove out the Greeks and the reason for mentioning them was because the theme of all this was Jewish heros not the Jerusalem skyline.
if you look to the right you can see Al-Aqsa mosque with its dark dome with 2 other Muslim domes appearing in the right side of the picture ... if IDF want to fake history I suggest to put some effort in it
Ah, as it should be :)
Israel will either emerge into 2013 or it will hvave ceased to exist in it's current form. News that Obama is sending Tens of thousands of troops to Israel in the coming days does not bode well for the Netanyahu government
That is what dynamite and bulldozers were invented for! See to it!
Amen to that
Can Jews live in the Land in peace with the Dome there? If the answer is no....sooner or later the Jews will tare it down.
In cutting out the dome of the Rock from this picture, we go down to the same low standards as the Palestinians, who constantly deny any Jewish connection to the Temple Mount , and who embrace Jesus as "a Palestinian" .
Much ado about nothing.
An embarrassingly lame explanation.
I'm all for sensitivity -- and certainly Muslims are very sensitive about the dome that they erected atop the holiest site in Judaism -- but it is a bit odd that there should be an issue with showing , for Hanukkah, Jerusalem as it appeared at the time during which the events which Hanukkah commemorates occurred.
Jews tolerate the current status-quo. Muslims do not understand and do not appreciate what sacrifice Jews have already made. Maybe this photo will help in this regard?
"a photo meant to illustrate Jerusalem during the period of the Second Temple". I didnt know photography was invented back then. Obviously another atempt to remove the non-jews from the hearts and minds.
that is what Israel has ended up
On the left you can clearly see the base structure of the dome. It was not removed 'photoshoply'! The essence of this paper is the search for defamation of Israel.
If you had you would clearly know that the image has been photoshopped.
I'm a Jewish fan since my youth.I believe that, the Hellenistic Period was not an occupation. It fertilised the jewish existence with knowledge and direction. The Maccabi's Movement was a historical and natural reaction. When the fruit falls from the tree ; The Hellenic and Jewish civilizations have a lot of similarities.
and what do "jewish connection-" mean? Possession?
"Abbas' position that negates the Jewish connection to the city" ? Where is this exactly, besides in your mind?
So this is supposed to be one of the temple periods? Where is the "temple" and why is Al Aqsa in the photo? Why is all of Jerusalem as it is today with that one exception? Really, we look like fools allowing this.
Just amazing. Amazing. Amazing. I love the IDF's response: "Image meant to illustrate a period in which holy Muslim site did not exist." Like they couldn't get a historical picture, or illustration, but airbrushing out a global icon from a contemporary picture was the way to go. Once again the IDF is its own worst enemy...
Under the current government these Rabbis know that it will be considered acceptable for them to erase the Mosque from the photo. What comes after the photo?
Its like taking a film of New York post 9/11 and before. If you took a painted a picture of a of New York landscape pre 9/11 you would see the World Trade Center in the background if you painted a picture after 9/11 you would not include the WTC because they no longer exist. At the time of the Macabe revolt there was no mosque on Temple Mount there was a Jewish Temple on the site. Now if you want to be a history revisionist like palestinians are experts at then you will include the mosque or a picture of the WTC in a post 9/11 era. Iyou want to show a picture of what things would have looked at the time you show a Temple not a mosque. You also notice this packet was released for the HISTORY OF JEWISH HEROISM and it included an article on the Macabes so there was no picture of a mosque, its not a conspiracy.
Never let the Truth get in the way of an emotive story. Your post makes too much sense, so much so that you should expect at least 100 thumb's down.
You want to know what's wrong with publishing the photo, so then you compare it to showing photos of NYC before and after the WTC was destroyed by religious extremists. Ummmm.... I think you just made the case against the photo yourself.
was doing that with Trotski and others.
And, your point is?
they did leave the Al Aqsa mosque right next to it.
What? Don't you know? It's all Israel and it's all for the Jews!
Boo! Hiss!
