Haredi woman gives birth during vow of silence, hides newborn under dress

It is invasive and unnatural to cut the umbilical cord. When the cord is cut from a non-drugged mother and baby, the baby cries in pain. It is a continuous part of the baby's body and should be left alone as it provides nutrients and oxygen to the baby until it naturally falls off.

Every group has its less intelligent members. If this article is true, this couple is surprisingly unaware of halacha. The Torah can be violated for pikuach nefesh, all the moreso a simple taanit dibur. The baby's parents were in the wrong, obviously, if the article is true.

It should be noted that while this couple is clearly crazy, all the rabbis in the story acted correctly and responsibly. They made phone calls to hatzalah on Shabbat and formed a Beit Din to order her to break her vow and talk. This is the important point that should be taken from this story.

The point is why did they take a healthy baby away from its healthy mother? At the very least transfer them to the hospital together so that she can continue to nurse and be there for her baby.

This is called Lotus Unassisted Birth. Around the world this is a common way for women to give birth in peace and calm. No one tears away these enlightened women's babies from them. But because this woman was religious and charedi it is sensational news and she must be 'mentally ill'. But with the new draconian laws on homebirth in Israel, that were recently passed, this is going to become more and more common here - get used to it!.

There was nothing wrong with the baby's physical health nor the mother's physical health. This is called unassisted lotus birth. It's usually completely fine to leave the placenta attached to the baby - it falls off naturally. The mother simply wanted to keep to her spiritual commitment of not speaking for a day. Perhaps she hid the baby to avoid this kind of "emergency" scenario. One would think that if she thought there was any danger to her or the baby, she would go with "pikuach nefesh" and speak to get help. Now the "authorities" separated a baby from its mother - now she cannot breastfeed the baby nor give the baby her love and warmth - this is probably the most dangerous aspect that occurred here.

Not cutting the umbilical cord and allowing the placenta and cord to dry and fall off on its own is called LOTUS BIRTH. It's not mainstream, but not unheard of. The medical team overreacted by forcing the mother to go to the hospital on Shabbat, when instead all they needed to do was a preliminary exam of the baby, determine it was healthy and then leave everyone the hell alone. The fact that she'd taken a vow of silence and refused to speak even after being released from said vow just shows she's a fanatic. And separate from ALL OF THAT, if the family was living in squalor, authorities should get involved.

This is NOT NORMAL HAREDI BELIEF. This was a misunderstanding of Jewish Law AND mental illness. The problem is lack of proper treatment for the mentally ill.

Notice how the rabbi called Hatzlaha and broke Shabbat to get the baby help. What this women (and her husband) did is AGAINST Orthodox Judaism, not a function of it.

Babies are a gift from G-d ....it appears from the condition of the apartment and the woman's eradicable behavior that she definitely needs psychiatric help along with her husband....G-d would never carelessly endanger a baby's life like this...an American grandma...
