Pope Benedict XVI who announced Monday he would step down has presided over a papacy that worked to improve relations between the Catholic Church and Jews worldwide, desite some hiccups.

Scandals of abuse pre-date this Pope's tenure by many years. The fundamental structure of the Catholic church, i.e. unmarried priests, monks and nuns, inevitably leads to the possibilities of such abuse. Also, its dogmatism and rigid hierarchy. One of the reasons that anti-semitism is so prevalent amongst Catholics; and less so amongst the more schismatic Protestants ( a bit like us argumentative Jews, come to think of it....)
