Education Minister: Any move harming donations to universities must be stopped

Gideon Sa'ar responds to Im Tirtzu threat to target political science faculty at Ben Gurion University for their 'anti-Zionist tilt.'

Education Minister Gideon Sa'ar responded Tuesday to a campaign threatening to block donations to Israeli universities if left wing professors aren't dismissed, saying that any attempt which may hurt the donations must be stopped.

The activist group Im Tirtzu threatened in a letter to university president Prof. Rivka Carmi last month that if Ben-Gurion University of the Negev didn't take steps "to put an end to the anti-Zionist tilt" in its politics and government department, Im Tirtzu would work to persuade donors in Israel and abroad to stop funding the university.

It also said it would "advise political science students to stay away from the university."

In response to the Haaretz report on the letter Tuesday, Sa'ar said that "regardless of claims on pluralism in the Israeli academia, I categorically reject any move that could prevent donations to Israeli institutions, or condition such donations on anything."

Carmi also responded to the letter, saying that "our university, like other universities, is subject to supervision. The Council for Higher Education visits us on a regular basis and in most instances we emerge in a very good position."

Carmi added that donors to the university know the pluralistic values of the university and that the Im Tirtzu campaign will not affect the donations they receive.

Minister of Minority Affairs and former Ben Gurion University president Avishay Braverman also criticized Im Tirtzu on Tuesday, calling their move "borderline fascism."

"Academia is a stronghold of ideas and we need to defend it," Braverman said. "Academic freedom is such that it can't be influenced by external sources. If there is a Zionist university, Ben Gurion is it. I am glad that every university president joined together in order to stop this."

It's OK - at least to Haaretz and its minions of Islamists and foreign Jew-haters - to attack those calling for a response to hatred of Jews on Israeli campuses, but its not OK to condemn boycotts against the Jewish State? OOOOPS ... I forgot, this is Haaretz so it is not the truth we seek but promotion of Antisemitism

Some universities in Israel are incubators for anti Israeli activities .

The extreme left-staffed academies are posing serious danger for the future generations who are later called upon to defend Israel in such a difficult neighborhood . It is not America or Scandinavia who can afford to weather enemies who pose security threats from within . Israel is in a very different position and a house cleaning is in an urgent order .

Were not the "herrr professors" from BGU, TAU, HUJ... who were calling for divestment and boycotting... These lefties are very weird objects... They are against israel and hete the country but want to have their fat salaries.... Band of bolcheviks, they are the israeli nomenklatura

Israel should put an end to all these secular universities.

The only universities that should be allowed are the ones that teach Torah primarily and secular studies secondary (if needed). We are commanded to be "Light unto nations" in our morality, not in corruption. So far Israel's educational institutions have taught mostly corruption. Female teachers dress like they are in a strip bar, heresy is usually the main topic of discussion, and rabbis are being ridiculed by the so called "educators." It’s time for a change in Israel’s educational system.

That's attempted mind control. This must be stopped and Im Tirtzuis right. Sorry Braveman, academic freedom doesn't just apply to far leftists.

Academic freedom, or any type of freedom apply to everyone. Not just people who agree with you, look like you, speak like you, or are the same color as you. Grow a pair and see what life is like outside of your box.

These universities need fresh air -- foreign students

Israeli universities are way behind on international recruitment. The number of international students in regular degree programs is tiny compared with Israel's competitors in U.S., Canada, U.K. France, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, etc. Doing better on this front would be a breath of fresh air that would address many problems arising in stagnating intellectual environments.

You raise a very important point. I think you will find that decades ago there was a much higher enrollment of foreign students, especially from African countries coming to study in Israel. Far fewer today. It may well be language barriers, administrative demands that are hard to meet and then political reasons that many students simply do not agree with the politics of the Israeli government and therefore do not want to study there.

Despite the good work being done in medical research and the sciences at places like Tel Aviv U, Hebrew U, and Ben Gurion, I can't bring myself to support them. Money, after all, is fungible, and I won't subsidize the counterproductive work of its Humanities and Social Sciences departments. I do, however, support Weizmann and Technion. And if those other institutions would spin off the H and SS departments - making them earn their own keep - I'd be prepared to support the productive remainder. And apparently I'm not alone. Some months ago, one of Tel Aviv U's governors not only resigned but pulled all future funding after the President refused to consider sanctions on those who promote boycotts of their own institution.

This leftist idiots that will destroy Israel from within are finally being confronted. This should only be the begining. If you preach hatred for Israel then your preach hatred for Jews ... yes it that simple. If you as a israeli Professor preach hate against Israel then you should be sent to tehran or syria and teach there instead. I'm sure they can get a nice salaries and grants there for their acedemics Of course, there will be some strings attached I'm sure by the host backward nations in question,

    • 15:53

If Israel wants to continue to proclaim itself as the only real democracy in the Middle East, it will have to continue to allow freedom of speech, association and discussion - especially at places of higher learning. If it is left to Im Tirzu and their supporters, democracy and free speech will disappear.

    "Bordering on Fascism"?
    • Yaakov Sullivan
    • 17.08.10
    • 15:48

Nothing bordering about it. And what is Sa'ar squaking about? His government is responsible for this fascism that now runs Israel. If these fascists and communitarians of one tribe over all others, Im Tirtzu, is focusing on BGU, think of what they will do with Haifa U. and scholars like Ilan Pape and Avi Schlaim. Oh, I guess the latter saw the writing on the wall an is teaching abroad, not that those universities are free from the same zionist threats to their sources of funding.

    • 15:18

leftists... If people are made aware of the upsurd indoctrination against Israel and Judaism by agenda driven professors in Israeli universities, can someone explain where fascism and Mcarthyism steps in. many people would be shocked that the universities have been protecting these obsessed self-hating professors of brainwashing. they have a right to know what is hurting Israel and what is helping. If the fauxfessors believe they are in the right, have them go out and fundraise for their personal agendas. Guess what, NIF will probably come to their rescue, if they have not already. NIF Chairman chazan would have no problem finding arab and anti-semites to fund the halls of lower education at these venues of supposed intellectual growth and honesty. It is all called accountability- which has been totally missing in Israel's colleges. Bit by bit, the famous perpetrators of anti-Israel/Judaism fiction will be biting the dust- their thesis is worth nothing and short of becoming calumnists for Haaretz, they will actually go out and have to get some honest work. Sociology and psychology in action.
