Drunk driver kills 20-year-old in northern Israel, claims he was fleeing a fight
The driver turned himself in to the police after the incident at a Kibbutz in the Galilee, and was subsequently arrested.
A 20-year-old man was killed early overnight Saturday after being hit by a car, that was driven by a 28-year-old man near a pub in Kibbutz Kfar Giladi in the Galilee, northern Israel, who claims he was fleeing a fight.
The driver turned himself in to the police, and was subsequently arrested.
The incident took place at around 3 A.M. The driver arrived drunk at the police station in Kiryat Shmona and told police that he had been involved in an fight outside the pub in which a number of other youths had also been involved. According to him, he was attacked and decided to leave the site. He then says he got into his car, and when he started driving he hit someone who had also been involved in the fight. He claims that he was scared that he would be hurt, carried on driving and fled the scene.
A Magen David Adom rescue services team was called to the scene, and evacuated the youth who had been hit by the car. The youth was in a serious condition, and suffering from serious head injuries. He was taken to hospital, but succumbed to his wounds soon after that.
The Kiryat Shmona Police is investigating the incident. Over the past few hours, police have taken in 6 youths who are suspected of being involved in the incident.
