Israeli culture is no less toxic than fanatic Islam, and the country's discriminatory attitude toward Mizrahi Jews and Arabs qualifies it for the title of "most racist state," prominent Israeli author Sami Michael said on Monday.

21 0 0An impressive level of self hatred
- By Candace Makeda Moore
- 26 Jun 2012
- 11:56AM
Seriously, I am black, and have lived in Israel on and off for years. I graduated from the Technion, and did notice most of the countries elite is Ashkenazi; however to blame this on racism is overly simplistic. The truth is that different ethnic groups have adapted different cultural and occupational paterns, and this has led to differing outcomes. In my liberal community in Haifa people are judged by thier charecture, and not their ethnic origins. I find that I face less racism here than in the USA on a day to day basis. I think the problem is that many of us expect perfection and are dissapointed- even self hating- when we fall short. If we only expected behaviour like that of any other nation, we would be pleasantly surprised every day at the humanistic, positive side of Israel.

Having lived in the UK I would have said he is wrong, maybe the size of Israel magnifys everything and Israeli brashness makes it up front but British undercurrents and politeness often mask much racism. Israel is more honest and upfront and hide nothing, allowing all it's dirty laundry to be seen.

No one can correct it. Any outside influence, be it goy, Jewish, friend or foe, is labeled anti semitic. Any Israeli who tries to point out the obvious is called a self hating Jew, antizionist, antisemitic, left wingnut, or combinations of this. The United Nations is hopelessly prejudiced against it, and all sanctions, condemnations, warnings rulings against it are universally ignored, and the fact that the United Nations created it are conveniently forgotten. The teachings of the prophets of the scriptures are ignored, as regards kindness to the stranger, and only promises of a future land of the Jews from the Jordan to the Red Sea. Trips to Babylon are conveniently forgotten. It really seems pretty hopeless.

to state that Israel is the most racist state is over-reacting. Israel is also one of the first multicultural states in the world, and there are many success stories as well of Mizrahi immigrants who are making tremendous contributions - I speak of my extended families on both sides of my parents. However, the notion that there remains cultural discrimination is probably true - especially where there's limited employment opportunities and greater competition these days.

05 0 0Actually, we (Canadians) far surpass Israel
- By Brad
- 26 Jun 2012
- 04:45AM
The level of integration of Mizrahi Jews can stand great improvement but (a) the lack of intergration and priviledge is not necessarily attributable to racism and (b) far exceeds the level of integration and priviledge that Canada's indigenous population enjoys in my country. And our indigenous people are far better off, despite their miserable conditions, than indigenous peoples in many of the Americas. While I think that Sami Michael has a point, which is both worth listening to and very much worth trying to remedy, he is guilty, I believe, of dangerous hyperbole and/or failure to inform himself of the comparators which he himself draws!
