By Gideon Levy Tags: Tel AvivHaaretz' Gideon Levy spends the day with Yitzhak Muhammad Said, an asylum seeker from Darfur who recently came to Israel.
Said, along with dozens like him, lives in Tel Aviv's Levinski Park. The park has become a makeshift home for dozens of refugees who come to Israel seeking asylum and work, only to be caught in the quagmire of Israeli bureaucracy with very little options left.
A new law approved by the Israeli Knesset this month called "The infiltration prevention law" prevents the refugees from working and has created a fierce debate within Israeli society.

I appreciate your reportage but I do not understand why you used "go back to russia" as an argument. I see you did not mention this but you said so. I thought you are person at a bit higher level. I was wrong. You are intelligent and open-minded until you quarell with some "stupid post-soviet Jew"... Then you show "who i who"
it is a terrible situation the Sudanese refugees find themselves in.However,Israel is a small country with some of it's own people suffering from poverty. Why can't the Arab world step in to help? And where is the Red Cross?
Shalom, Israel is DOOMED! Have ye not learned from Torah/Tanach? THE SECULAR ZIONIST AGENDA FOR A JEWISH STATE Rabbi Dr. Chaim Simons Have ye not learned anything from what Rabbi Dr. Chaim Simons wrote? God is NOT mocked! Prepare for Judgment!
we can not become a shelter for all of Africa's refugees. The United States is not one for the Mexicans and the UK will not allow immigrants to come in from Calais.(The French have a detention center now to stop this). They must be helped, clothed, fed and then each case dealt with individually. The new detention center in the south will do all of this. . You can not work if you are an illegal immigrant in the US or UK so what's the difference here?
Mr Levy Internation law determiines that refugees can be granted refugee staus in the neighboring territory to their land of origin. In this case, Egypt, Libya, chad, or even the fledgling South Sudan. Therefore, in Israel, they are not asylum seekers, but rather illegal invaders and should be sent back to Egypt, whose duty it is to deal with them, under the international law that they, and you, and your left wing supporters quote chapter and verse only when it suits you all.
I don't see how anyone can remain indifferent to this situation after watching the video. I don't understand how this government can be so callous.
Give them a few flats in Ramat Aviv.
The government is callous like all other governments in the capitalist West because it gains politically by fostering anti african refugee bigotry amongst the electorate.Racism and xenophobia divert the attention of the proletariat from resisting exploitation by the boss class and liberal bourgeousie.Only implementation of firm Marxist Leninst principles and programmes will defeat the wily plans of the capitalists and their liberal allies. This should be achieved, at least initially , through the rebuilding of the international communist movement. socialism for all!
God forbid that any one on this Earth loose his home but when it takes place you will see those examples of refugees treatment in every country in this world....it is not like that only in Israel but every where. Generally every society likes tourists and their money but about strangers every society is more or less xenophobic and don't like them as equal citizens...
the government has a responsibility to its cititzens!
Millions of refugee all over the world have much harder conditions, I assure you! Israel is a small country and has got lots of things to provide for her security and her own population.
