A 90-year old woman and her daughter were killed Thursday morning after a fire broke out in their apartment in Ashkelon, southern Israel.

Police and rescue services arrived on the scene, but were unable to save them.

According to estimations, the fire, which broke out in their apartment on the 18th floor of their building, was caused by an electrical appliance that was left on overnight, most likely an electric oven.

A number of people were evacuated from neighboring apartments, and firefighters managed to get the blaze under control. The police have opened an investigation into the cause of the fire.
