By Haaretz Service Tags: Holocaust Israel newsNatalie Portman covers February's Elle U.K., and in her interview she discusses the sorts of roles she doesn't like to take on - overtly Jewish characters, one-dimensional girlfriends and sex bombs.

it is liking ask an asian actor to play an asian stereopyped role....shes jewish, for sure shes not embarassed about being a jewish, but if she don like the genrethats something completly up to her, it is liking not liking slash movies, no one can blame her for that.
She is a lousy actress and needs to find another hobby.
She seems embarrassed to be Jewish. What a stupid and insensitive thing to say implying she has no interest in the subject and that there are too many movies about the subject.
Good thing to say in a British / French magazine. Now they will adore her.
hire Whoopi Goldberg. At least, she has a Jewish name.
It type casting not racial profiling she dislikes. So what?
nobody can tell...she doesn't really "look Jewish."
"This is all a sick joke as the film industry is a gift of Jewish entrepreneurship to the world." Paul Freedman The film industry is a great way to indoctrinate also. So are magazines and newspapers. Hooray for the Internet. It's not controlled, yet. E-mail between countries are a real eye-openers. As for Shoah movies, doesn't anyone get tired of the eternal re-runs and re-makes and.....? 75 MILLION people died in the Holocaust, not just 6 millions Jews, including my relatives and friends, and I still say prayers for them. So get off it Paul. The film industry was a goose that laid the golden eggs for an elite few. Entreprenurial gift to Gentiles? You jest, right? Salaam/Shalom
Too many people in California are working to twist every knife against us. Remain flexible and refuse to be pigeon-holed or used as a stereotype.
ish role so portman is not up to the task. Leave those parts for the truly great actresses which you are not. I will avoid any movie you are in because your characters lack depth and conviction
Rotten actress, just uses her Jewishness to get ahead of the competition (like the 1000% more talented Scarlet Johansson)
Natallie--she is afraid to play any Jewish roles, including about history, like Holocaust, and probably drama. Not Israeli, Jewish. Apparently, you find anything about Jews to be political and racist. This is all a sick joke as the film industry is a gift of Jewish entrepreneurship to the world. She is not trying to avoid politics but wants to be free of her religion, her identity, her personal history, in order to make more money, don't kid yourself. This has nothing to do with ideals.
I think her best movies were Star Wars. Therefore she should stick to something like that, space-opera/pure fantasy stuff. Some people shine best in certain genres.
I am sure the Holocaust victims wouldnt like to be profiled by somebody like Natalie Portman.Respect for the victims demands it.
Natalie Portman did quite a bit of work for Alan Dershowitz before she started making films. Maybe that left a bad taste in her mouth.
On the occasions that actors and other entertainers do politicize themselves, you begin to see that element rather than the roles they play. I wouldn't watch Tim Robbins or Susan Sarandon for years because they were too far left for me. Now that I've moved more to the left, they are OK and, instead, it is Jon Voight and others that I don't watch. Natalie Portman is a great actress and an exceedingly smart person. I don't hold that fact that she was born in Israel against her. She does well to steer clear of the politics of racism and oppression.
I can understand why she would not want to play a role in a Holocaust movie. No matter how good an actor is, there is no way a person could truely act like those who faced the Holocaust, I'm sure Ms. Portman knows that. If I were an actor I wouldn't want to cause disrepect for those who were involved.
"Oh I kept turning down Jewish roles." I am so sorry Natalie you had to keep turning them down. I don't even have a job and you are so concerned with not playing a Jewish character when in face you are actually a Jew. Hollywood elitist at its best. Try walking a mile in my shoes for a second hun...
a very beautiful and even more clever.
