Muslim states: No need for multinational force on Gaza-Egypt border
Hamas says it would regard multinational troops as occupation forces, regardless of nationality.
By Avi Issacharoff, News Agencies and Yoav SternThe Organization of Islamic Conference said Thursday that it does not see the need of a multinational force along the Gaza-Egypt border to help counter Hamas' growing strength.
"I think what is needed is not external forces, it needs a better understanding between internal forces," the secretary-general of the 57-strong body, Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, told reporters from Malaysia.
"I do think that there is a need for a strong leadership on behalf of all political leaders and the situation cannot be allowed to further deteriorate," he said. "The leadership must immediately show its strength and resolution in implementing the necessary action."
Ihsanoglu said he has been in contact with Abbas and other Palestinian leaders, and has told them to show more strength of leadership.
Hamas said Thursday that it would refuse to accept a multinational force along the Gaza-Egypt border and would treat it as an occupying power.
"Hamas rejects any dispatch of foreign forces to the Gaza Strip," Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri said. "The movement would regard those forces as occupation forces no different to the Israeli occupation, regardless of their nationality."
A multinational force in Gaza was suggested by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas during separate phone conversations Tuesday with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who in turn discussed it with the Security Council on Wednesday.
The deployment of a multinational force along the Philadelphi Route in Rafah, on the Gaza-Egypt border, should be seriously considered, Olmert said Tuesday.
The presence of an international force could help curb the smuggling of weapons into the Gaza Strip from Egypt, and halt the ongoing strengthening of the militant groups in the Gaza Strip.
Olmert raised the likelihood of such a deployment following the continued internecine violence in the Gaza Strip.
Speaking after a meeting with visiting Dutch Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen, Olmert said that "Western countries need to act soon to alter the situation in the Gaza Strip."
Olmert suggested that the multinational force would be similar to the United Nations peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon.
He is likely to raise the idea of a multinational force during his talks with President George Bush in Washington next Tuesday.
The idea of a such a force along the Philadelphi Route was proposed by the Foreign Ministry, and was presented during a meeting of the security cabinet three weeks ago, which centered on the situation in the Strip.
According to the plan the force would serve to prevent the smuggling of arms from Sinai to the Gaza Strip in coordination with an Egyptian force operating on the Egyptian side of the border.
The multinational force is not envisioned to have a role in preventing the clashes between Fatah and Hamas, or ending the Qassam rocket attacks.
Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni described the arms smuggling as the main "cause of terrorism" in the Gaza Strip, and proposed that the U.S. fund the building of a barrier that will prevent smuggling.

#42 solon. Inspired "dream along with me, we are on our way to the stars..."
Give Gaza over to Egyptian administration. West Bank to Jordanian. Disarm Iran and Syria, especially the former, completely -- by force if need be. Then we've the region that '67 was meant to make possible. The EU, US, and Israel can easily do all of this. India, no friend of islamofascist theocrats, will endorse this as well, and the rest of the world will silently applaud. Lasting peace, at long last.
Hell (& Peres too). . . but would you resign first, please? It is time Israel prepare for a real war & you are definitely not the man to do it!
Nothing could be clearer than that there will be no lasting peace, nor will there be so much as civilisation, in the region until all theocrats are disarmed. That holds especially of Iran. No one who would force women to wear blankets over their heads and engage in 'honour killings,' for example, should ever hold a gun.
The boycott led to inevitable tensions as Fatah became a lackey for Israeli goals.
the style of "Dutch", of so-called "Hannah", of "Maureen Ann", and of Marilyn.
Hamas has kicked Fatah's butt and has ended up with all their western-provided arms. Now, the Egyptian border will become a funnel for even more arms and money. Iran and Al-Qaida now have a foothold in Gaza. Why should Hamas and other Muslim states now want an multinational force on the Gaza-Egypt border? Israel, as usual, has been caught flatfooted. The impotency and stupidity of the Israeli government is pathetic. Haniyeh must thank Allah for Olmert every day. Now that Peres has been selected President, Haniyeh must be saying, "Oh Allah, why are you being so good to me."
Of course they dont want an international force there. That MIGHT decrease the amount of weapons they could smuggle in for the new government of hamastan to murder Israeli babies...and we all know that anything that decreases productivity in murdering israeli babies is something the arab bloc would never stand for
For understanding Arabs so well.
Ta det helt med ro, Magnus. Det er klart at Abbas og hans gjeng er quislinger, og ikke Hamas. Kanskje du like ikke Hamas, men det er ikke grunn til aa misbruker Quisling sin navn.
as THE delusional conspiracist. Where is your hard proof that Israel is secretly funding Arab thugs? The difference between you and clickfool is that he knows when to shut up when he is proven wrong. You don't and continue to embarrass yourself with irrelevant associations when challenged.
Hamas is already cleaning up the streets. Some four hours ago, they escorted hundreds of members of the large quisling Bakr clan to a mosque where they are currently chanting in unison: "Astagh/firullah" (tr. "forgive me"). 'Clean up as you go' seems to be their motto. Good.
That day will surely come.
You know, for the Arabs.
"...and other sleazy elements secretly financed by israel to destablize the situation" So, in the Arab world, they believe everything bad in their own society is financed by Israel or brought by "the other". 1) Drugs and prostition in Iran?? Israel 2) Sunni/Shai violence?? Israel (depsite the violence existing for more than 1000 years) 3) Family violence for one's honor?? It's really good for Muslims but Israel makes it bad. 4) Internet cafes?? This means getting outside information of real life - definitely bad for Muslims - Israel's fault! 5) Constant victimization of Palestinians because its easier to get aid this way, rather than actually build an economy and buildings?? Of course it's Israel's fault. If they didn't exist, Pals would have already designed the best computer CPU and found cures to many diseases...we all know that...right?? I laugh because Arabs like you really believe this, and it's this same backward thinking that keeps you depressed and lied to
"You who squat upon stolen Palestinian land" 1) It is Pal Arabs who stole land, squatting on land most didn't own when Turkish landlords fled following WWI. Compare that to Jews who purchased over 1 million acres legally. 2) Though the 1947 partition gave mostly Jewish majority land to Jews, the Arabs still couldn't accept it! 3) In 1967, while Israel worked to avoid war, the Arabs demanded war. After which, Israel offered to give land for peace - which was rejected. "What `aid` have you ever given to those whose land" 1) Israel has and continues to provide water, electricity, and gas to Gaza for which the Pals pay nothing. 2) work directly with Pals in collecting and passing on tax revenues (while Pals still run up huge bills) 3) work directly with Pal agricultural and environmental groups to stem diseases and pass on best-practices. 4) continue to allow Pal workers into Israel to gain money, even though using Thai and Romanians are more secure...and they work harder
Israel had said nothing but you can't help yourself can you.?
If this is true, and when confirmed, Israel would be crazy not to completely close all border crossing with Gaza. Any rockets coming into Israel should be answered with the full force of the IDF; no restraint. Cut off their power and water. It's not a country. It's not a state. It's a terror enclave. A terrorist training base. It should be treated as such. No peacekeepers necessary. Just kill the murderers one by one.
Post #1 says, "Enough, enough for us, Israelis, to assist those who spit at all agreements and then go and murder our people!" It is Israel that 1) withholds funds from the Palestinians, 2)that diverts water from the Palestinians, 3)that violates International treaties, 4) that murders Palestinian children. And speaking about 'agreements', the Palestinians had no input into the penultimate agreement that changed the course of the ME in 1948: Al Nachba. Those are among the reasons that many Palestinians spit at Israelis. In Israel, chutzpah and paranoia appear to be endemic. And they appear to be incurable diseases.
AIPAC.
UN would need to take control of all occupied territories, including East Jerusalem. Otherwise it just become an occupation force itself, preventing the palestinians in the Gaza ghetto from exercising their right to take part in resisting foreign occupation
why?
I`m sorry to say, but it is YOU whou sounds like Vidkun Quisling, the fascist and arch-traitor of my country. In fact, the ideas of Hamas and that of Nasjonal Samling (the nationalist party of Quisling )are VERY simmilar indeed. Both anti-semitic (though Hamas is much more so, than even Quisling was), and both with a fascist belligerent nationalist ideology. You should read up on some history, and then perhaps you would feel some shame for your violent ways. How do you think peace can be achived with Hamas in power, as they only preach war? If you cared for the pals, you would wish for them a Gandhi, and not a fascist for a leader. What do you think will be the outcome of a Hamas-Israel war? The answer is many, many dead...... Have a nice day...
Why get concerned about Gaza? If Hamas says everything is OK, So everything must be OK! It?s all ?Haaretz? fault, Hamas is right, If ?Haaretz? would have done an objective work, They would see that all this Mambo-Jambo is just routine life in Gaza. Executions between clans was a part of Gaza life also in the past So now Israel isn?t in Gaza they have more freedom of speech & expression
Put the guards in EGYPT. A border has two sides. Marc
and I hope that Hamas will make a quick and decisive victory over the quislings,so that they can get down to the job of cleaning up the street gangs, the clans and other sleazy elements secretly financed by israel to destablize the situation.Regards.
It's time everyone faced up to it.
Now that the US has lost Iraq maybe she ought to send troops to Gaza to try to save it for its Palestinian friends, instead of trying to force a three Palestinian states Middle East---Jordan, Hamastan and Fatah Palestinian state in Israel's heartland.
A better use of multinational forces is to station them along 1967 armistice lines and use them to block Jewish colonies. That would be consistent with the mission of the UN.
Hamas is now the uncontested government in the West Bank, and they have categorically rejected the idea of a multinational force in Gaza. The world's main Muslim body, to which Egypt belongs, has also rejected this idea. That's it then. Over and out with Olmert's big idea.
You who squat upon stolen Palestinian land have some chutzpah to prance about stating on these threads what you will or will not do regarding zionist 'aid' to the Palestinians. What 'aid' have you ever given to those whose land you have greedily gobbled up?
There is no way that any international force will deploy there. Lambs to the slaughter if they do their job, cover for Hamas smugglers if they don't. It will be necessary for Israel to re-occupy Philidelphi. If not, eventually Hamas will be able to smuggle in some meaningful armament and we'll have a situation like south Lebanon. Just let in food and medicine, that's it. The main exporter from the Gaza strip will be the Hamas publicity department, which will send out posed photos of crying Palestinian children pretending to be hungry while the photographer checks his Rolex watch for the time.
Might well be to surrender control in the West Bank. A divided enemy is a weakened enemy. Israel might then pursue a seperate agreement with the PA regards the West Bank. Or even the possibility of Jordan taking control of a future West Bank area with autonomy and dual nationality(Jordanian/Palestinian)for the Palestinians therein. Though this will have to wait until 2009, post US elections.
Their rejection of the force is even more of a reason to have one now...what have they got to hide, I wonder??? That said, I can't see many countries running to undertake the job of fighting terror...
That is the only way to ensure against smuggling. It would also be good for the Egyptians.
The Philadelphi Road was controlled by the IDF. For no reasons, this stupid government left and enabled Iran to arm the Hamas terrorists to such a degree, that the strategic situation has dramatically changed. Hamas is now in total control of the Philadelphi Road and the crossing points. Olmert and Livni have once again helped Iran in an unprecedented way to make out of Gaza a bridgehead for Iranian intervention and a paradise for terrorists. It is to question if this is due to stupidity only or even high treason. In any case, every day with Olmert and Livni in power, is a day of joy for the mullahs in Tehran, while the nuclear clock is ticking day by day.
Good. If the rest of the world will also be seen as an occupying power then let them fend for themselves and, should they wish to confront the Israelis, once and for all, let it be. This is a world of legitimate countries; not of "movements". This is a world where (with great difficulty) reason still tries to prevail.
The deployment of an international peacekeeping force would work to Israel's advantage, because it could act as a buffer between it and those extremists who attack civilians. If such a force were deployed along the Green Line it would relive Israel of the crippling cost of maintaining its own forces in the OPT becuase it could then withdraw them to behind a Wall and hermetically seal off the West Bank from terrorist attack. The precedent is already there to the north east of Israel. What are the objections to the deployment of such a force along the Green Line, pending final border agreements?
Israel must now complete its disengagement from the Gaza Strip, close all borders between Israel and the Strip, cease all import into the Strip water, electricity, petrol and all other goods. It must also stop allowing the passage of people and goods, completely, from the West Bank to the Gaza Strip. The residents of the Gaza Strip, Hamastan, should fend for themselves under their Hamas leadership, and be assisted by the Arab countries, one of which is bordering with the Strip. Enough, enough for us, Israelis, to assist those who spit at all agreements and then go and murder our people!!!!!
