Mofaz looks to force Livni to hold Kadima primaries sooner

Kadima cuts short committee meeting after details were leaked to the press in real time.

Shaul Mofaz, the former army chief, defense minister, and now chief rival to Kadima chairwoman Tzipi Livni, demanded Thursday that the party hold primaries within three months.

Kadima, the leading opposition party to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the largest party in the Knesset, prematurely adjourned a committee meeting on Thursday after the details of the session were leaked to the press in real time.

Mofaz, who attended the meeting while Livni was absent, received backing for his position from MK Otniel Schneller.

During the hearing, most party members said they supported remaining in the opposition for the long term and that primaries should be held either in 2011 or 2012.

Despite being at odds with party institutions, Mofaz plans a number of grassroots events in the hopes that his significant contingent of backers on the ground will create a groundswell of pressure that will compel Livni to declare primaries sooner.
