Meretz MK Chaim Oron announced on Monday that he will contend for the chairmanship of his party in internal elections set for March 2008.

Oron thus joins current Meretz Chairman Yossi Beilin, faction head Zahava Gal-On and MK Ran Cohen, who have already announced their candidacies.

Oron, who enjoys wide support among kibbutzim and established Meretz members, in the past has refused to run for chairmanship of the party, despite many requests he do so. The turnaround comes after many consultations on the matter.

Gal-On, Beilin and Cohen are already in the midst if intensive organization of their camps ahead of the race.
