Military Intelligence Chief: Syrian army now at its highest state of alert

Yadlin says Hezbollah interested in dragging Syria into fighting; Syrian army still on defensive alert.

By Gideon Alon and Haaretz Correspondent

Syria has placed its military at its highest state of alert in recent years, Israel Defense Forces Intelligence Chief Major General Amos Yadlin told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Tuesday. Syrian forces do remain, however, on a defensive rather than offensive alert.

Yadlin emphasized that "neither Syria nor Israel are interested in a military clash but the situation is explosive and the events may potentially be incorrectly interpreted. This could entangle Syria up in a battle against us."

Hezbollah is interested in opening another front for Israel with Syria, Yadlin said. Hezbollah gunners are firing at the Golan Heights in an effort to embroil Syria in the fighting.

Yadlin noted that Syria, together with Iran, was Hezbollah's main weapons supplier during the past years. The missiles that killed Israelis in Haifa came from the Syrian military.

The Military Intelligence chief rejected assertions that the IDF was surprised by Hezbollah's level of preparedness in south Lebanon.

"There was no element of surprise in Hezbollah's deployment," Yadlin said. "During the past year, we passed intelligence assessments on to the decision-making level, including comprehensive information on long-range missiles supplied to Hezbollah."

Committee Chairman MK Tzachi Hanegbi (Kadima) supported Yadlin's assertions and said he was "insulted" during the past several days by media reports indicating Israel was surprised by Hezbollah.

The news reports are sounding more like the Bible every day. That's not what the liberal media wants to hear, but it sure seems like Isaiah 17:1 (the destruction of Damascus) is more than a possibility, especially if Syria makes the mistake of attacking Israel. Only God knows the time frame, but he told us to watch for the signs. And this war in Lebanon certainly seems like one of those signs.

present Zionist war of coastal territory
    • Alexander
    • 28.07.06
    • 15:26

The reason for the destruction of Lebanon is to secure the coastline in order to keep the terminal of the new oil pipe line Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan secure. From there under water pipes will transport oil to Israel who can not afford a coast under Hizbollah control. Syria may make a deal other than military, as that would be a high price to pay for both sides, however, it may be needed in order to secure the whole coast from Haifa to Ceyhan. What a mess for oil that sooner or later will run out anyway, and be replaced with newer technological possible fuels...

I agree with you Kenny, you are very near to what I think is innevitably going to happen as Syria is forced to act, what would Israel do if a country was killing Jewish or Israeli citizens in a nearby country in the hundreds they would have to react to this. This war may escalate to the point where countries like Russia and China/North Korea end up fighting alongside Iran/Syrian and the other Arab countries and who knows maybe the end of the world.

"That verse has been fulfilled many times since its writings. The Mongol destruction is the most well-known destruction of Damascus." The prophecy states far more than just the destruction of Damascus - it's destruction will be so utterly complete that only animal life will only live there. The prophecy states Damascus will never be rebuilt, so the Mongol invastion of 1299-1301 doesn't measure up to say the prophecy has been met.

Lets hope the Moskit and Sunburn missles aren't included from the Russians(which they probably are), as these missiles are unstoppable. Is Israel prepared to sacrifice Tel Aviv? Lets hope cooler heads prevail. This has nothing to do with biblical prophecy and everything to do with failed diplomacy and leadership.

Once again, the great King of Saudi Arabia speaks: (from Debka.com) "King Abdullah says Israel?s military offensives in Lebanon and the Palestinians could ignite a war in the region!" (DUH! I think we're already at war, dear King!) July 25, 2006, 5:59 PM (GMT+02:00) State media in Riyadh quote the king as saying in an official statement: If the peace option fails ?because of Israeli arrogance,? there will be no option but war. He pledged $500 to rebuild Lebanon and $250 for the Palestinians." (I hope this is just a typo, otherwise the king is getting cheap!) But seriously, how does his comments, in any way, help the situation? He blames "Israel's arrogance" for the problems yet doesn't say a single word about his fellow Arab warmongers. If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem. So dear pompous blowhard King, no one in the world cares about what you say. Wait! the King spoke again: "The sun will set in the west!." Oh, he is the genious!

Your assertions may be accurate, but not comprehensive. Jerusalem has also been sacked countless times in 2000 years, but, like Jerusalem, what will happen to Damascus in the future must be kept in its proper context. Two of the most important elements are: a. terrorism and b. advanced military weapons. When the Bible mentions "ruinous heap", advanced military weapons would definitely fulfill that verse--more than at any other time in the past. While I'm not referring to nuclear weapons, Israel's other weapons could carry the weight that would bring the definition of "heap" to its maximum effect--especially in response to a chemical weapons attack (or something else) from Syria. We're not talking 'regular' fighting anymore. Damascus would be totally destroyed.

    • bernard Ross

It should be obvious to all that without dealing decisively with Syria and Iran the terror problems will continue. First, decimate Hezbullah, then turn to syria and Iran. The principle that the best defense is a good offense is important. Both Syria and Iran are running terrorism without having to pay a price on their own turf. Syria and Iran should be destabilised constantly trying to put out fires at home. US, Kurds and Israel should form alliances to destabilise Syria and Iran. they are both surrounded and the kurds are a great fifth column in both. Note that Iraq is no longer funding terrorism abroad because it is in chaos at home. Chaos in the land of the enemy is a good thing not a bad thing. bring chaos to the lands of the terrorist funders and harbourers.

Claims about Israel striking fleeing Lebanese inside Syria are unsubstantiated at best. The closest location to Syria hit by Israel is the Lebanon-Syria border crossing, and Syria was adamant that its own territory had not been hit. Put it this way: Syria has never demarcated its boundary with Lebanon, and is dying for an excuse to send its troops back to "brotherly Lebanon". It warned it would do so if Israel came 'close' to doing so, and if Israel had indeed crossed this 'red line' there would now be Syrian forces in the Bekaa valley.

This has always been a proxy war, Iran vs U.S. via their respective clients Hezbollah/Syria and Israel. If Iran sends it's re-supply missiles to Hezbollah through Syria, Israel may be compelled to destroy them in Syria. That will be the trigger for a 3rd front. I'm sure there are many in the US that would like to see Syria's nose bloodied after so many U.S. soldiers have died in Iraq due to insurgents supported by Syria. This could bring Syria into the war. The U.S. will be publicly sypmpathetic to Israel, and privatly cheering, while gleefully resupplying Israel and letting Israel do all the bleeding. This will bring the U.S. and Israel nearer to direct hostilities with Iran, the real adversary of both. That's not to say Israel isn't compelled to destroy Hazbollah anyway - it must do so. But it serves the U.S.' purposes as well.

To quote Doc Holiday in Tombstone "Say When". Israel has been preparing for this fight for years and may take a few bruises, but in the end is going to kick Syria and Iran's butts. Both Syria and Iran may have new weapons systems from Russia and China, but their forces are lacking the morale to fight. Unlike Iran and Syria that seek the destruction of all Jews and the state of Israel; Israel does not seek to destroy or occupy Syria or Iran. However, Israel is willing to defend itself. If that means turning Damascus and Tehran into glass to defend Israel's right to exist, then Syria and Iran leave Israel no choice.....bring it on.

Syria is on a predictably correct track. Its hereditary president does not have to worry about any public reaction to the economic effect of a high state of military alert. So, why not? As Israel cannot repeat the passivity precedng the 1973 war, it must take into account and prepare for the possibility of an active third front - which entails further disruption of the economy and diversion of planning, forces and supplies from the two active fronts. The silver lining to this cloud is that, once more, there is no combination of states confronting Israel that can prevail.

Syria does not want a conflict, after all no one will offer to rebuild their economy if they were to suffer a fate similar to Lebanon. And would the world's press be so welcome in the midst of a war as they are in Lebanon. Also if military and regime were weakened in Syria, Islamists of similar ilk to Hizbollah would be prime beneficiaries. Naturally IAF will be flying recon' missions to keep an eye on goings ons. Not least efforts to re-supply Hizballah. Still Syria helped to enpower this monster, how ironic that they are forced to contemplate a war because of it. The most likely outcome is a ceasefire that will hold, in the next few weeks. Hizbollah pushed from border positions and Syria to keep Hizbollah on tighter leash for inducements. Good conclusions possible for all, except Hizbollah.

Syria to be dragged in by Hizballah

When Hizballah reaches its most critical point of desperation, Syria will be dragged into the battle by Hizballah's unauthorized actions from Syrian territory. The corrupt minded men of Hizballah, who hide behind women's skirts, will not balk at firing rockets at Israel from Syrian territory. If you can't truck in the missiles, send them flying from inside Syria. Time to "come to Jesus".

If Syria enters and Israel fell back it would be temporary and then comes the payback and regime change. The only thing that is a little scarry is that Assad Sr. wasn't stupid. Assad Jr. may not know its limits. And, it may be Syria fighting a two front war.

Syria would be out of it's mind not to be

Air strikes have been made on vehicles fleeing Lebanon well inside Syria. The IDF has overflown Syria. There are those in both the US and Israel arguing for attacking Syria. Syria would have to be out of it's mind not to be on a high state of alert.
