Gunmen on Thursday kidnapped two U.S. tourists in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, said a security official, in the latest such incident in the area.

The kidnappers had stopped a car that was carrying the two to a hotel and took them to a mountainous area, added the official.

The incident came after authorities had arrested a suspected relative of the kidnappers, according to the official.

In February, two U.S. tourists were abducted in Sinai by tribesmen demanding the release of relatives detained by the police.

In the Febuary incident, they were released unharmed hours later.

Security has been a major concern in Egypt since the ouster of former President Hosni Mubarak more than a year ago, with crime soaring despite promises by the government to re-establish security.
