The trial of former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak resumed in a criminal court on the outskirts of Cairo Monday, amid tight security.

Dozens of people gathered outside the Police Academy building, where the trial in which Mubarak is facing charges of having ordered the killing of around 850 people during the revolt that toppled him from power in February is being held.

Some were chanting anti-Mubarak slogans and holding Egyptian flags.

A large number of police officers kept supporters and opponents of Mubarak apart. The trial has seen some violence between the two sides since the start of the trial on August 3.

Mubarak, 83, is being held at a military medical center outside Cairo since August. He is being tried alongside his sons, Alaa and Gamal and former interior minister Habib al-Adli and six former security aides.

All the defendants have pleaded not guilty.
