Syrian TV reported Tuesday that a deputy prime minister who met U.S. officials over the weekend has been sacked for "overstepping" his duties.

The Tuesday announcement, based on a presidential decree, came several days after Qadri Jamil held talks with U.S. officials in Geneva.

A UN official said Jamil was discussing the possibility of holding a peace conference for Syria in Geneva, but no breakthroughs were reported to have come out of the talks. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the discussions.

The TV report said Jamil was sacked because he was absent from work without prior permission and for "overstepping" his portfolio without coordinating with the government.
