The Only Escape From the Battle of Aleppo

A small border town in Turkey provides the sole escape route for civilians from both sides of the Syrian civil war raging nearby.

KILIS, Turkey – When Ahmed Hamada is asked how he reached the border from besieged Aleppo, he makes a waving gesture with his hand – "I went around," he says to summarize the route he took from the war-torn city. The 20-year-old doesn’t look like a fighter fresh from the battlefield. He is wearing a flowery shirt and his hair is gelled. He's on vacation now.
