Attorney General Menachem Mazuz told the Winograd War Commission, charged with investigating the management during the Second Lebanon War, that he believes Israel Defense Forces operations during the war were justified.

"The more importance a structure has militarily, the more it can justify a larger attack, including on civilians," Mazuz said in his testimony to the war panel, on which a gag order was lifted on Tuesday.

Mazuz said that the Second Lebanon War was "the most legal war in the history of the State of Israel and maybe ever." He also insisted that during the war, the Military Prosecution oversaw all decisions in order to give legal opinions in real time, before targets were attacked.

Regarding the meeting in which the government decided to go to war, Mazuz said he could not say that the ministers had a full sense of what such a decision would entail. However, he said he was witness during the war to a government effort to take decisions in an organized fashion and let professionals of varying ranks express differing positions.

Okay, Mazuz has an opinion like all of us, but that doesn't let the IDF off the hook for going to war totally unprepared and allowing Hizbullah to wreck forever, our myth of invincibility. Every IDF general staff member and every IDF general should have been summarily dismissed from the IDF without pension or perks for this deliberate and idiotic blunder by our military.
