Major N.Y. Islamic center honors Orthodox rabbi at annual event
Rabbi Marc Schneier, rated among 50 most influential U.S. rabbis, honored for initiating multi-faith symposium.
By Shlomo ShamirThe Islamic Center of Long Island (ICLI), considered one of the largest leading Muslim centers among the U.S. Muslim community, awarded a special honor to Orthodox Rabbi Marc Schneier on Sunday.
400 Muslim religious leaders and businessman took part in the center's annual dinner Sunday. Those in attendance welcomed Schneier with much applause as the heads of the ICLI bestowed the special award upon the rabbi.
The award was in recognition of Scheier's initiative for a unique multi-cultural symposium involving rabbis and imams held recently in New York. Another recipient of the same award was Imam Omar Namus, of New York, who also took part in the symposium.
Rabbi Marc Schneier is President and Founder of The Foundation for Ethnic Understanding (FFEU), which work toward improving relations between minorities in the United States. He serves as the spiritual leader of Manhattan's New York Synagogue and was rated number 37 of the top 50 most influential American rabbis by Newsweek magazine in 2007.
In his acceptance speech, Schneier referred to the imminent Middle East peace conference to be held shortly in Annapolis, Maryland, saying that the "problem with the conference is the absence of a senior religious figure who would represent both the Jewish and Muslim faiths."
"Religion is a powerful factor in the Middle East" Schneier said, and added that without the participation of Jewish and Muslim religious leaders, the peace process will likely fail.

#3 Terry - you are absolutely correct. The muslims are simply trying in every way possible to get a stronger foothold in America in order to one day impose Sharia law. This is their ultimate aim for all countries on the planet. Jews who promote this are dupes and fools, participating in their own destruction.
Muslims and Jews are brothers but within a family one needs respect.During the many years of Arab dominance in the Middle East and Spain Arabs misused their power by demanding that dhimmis be subserviant. Now the Arabs have a chance to take part in a project which will better the world, namely the acceptance of the Jewish state of Israel.Arabs have chosen not to do that which has been a great moral and political mistake.Muslims and Jews should take heart and look at the US example of Muslims and Jews respecting one another. The future could be bright if peace were to descend upon the Middle East, extinguishing Islamofacism in its wake.
i just want to make sure you know that although i address you in its subject line; the rest of it was meant for terry. i failed to make that clear in the message text.
So, Schneier thinks that without religious leaders the peace process is likely to fail. First, he confuses the cause of the problem with the solution. Second, how humble of the man. Is it hubris or folly or both? Without relgion the entire middle east, heck the world, is better off. Nice idea this religion stuff but it hasn't worked out so well. Having said that, any time people of different religions, especially those who are on less than friendly terms genuinely "honour" someone in the other community, that is a small step forward.
reason i ask is cuz you remind me of him alot. he and i were good friends on these blogs, despite our differences. we used to really enjoy posting each other, joking around, and of course jumping each other's shit over our conflicting opinions. but i really do miss him, though...stubborn ol' grump that he was...lol. he had a thing for "magic mushrooms", too...and was always thoroughly convinced that i could get him some. never could get him to understand otherwise...sighhhh...i think left these blogs because he thought i was lying to him when i told him that puff...puff's a magic dragon...ran off with the magic mushroom stash and there weren't any more to be had. but anyway...sorry...i didn't mean to bore you...and i apologize for taking up your time with this message... i just thought maybe...well IF you know him...could you tell him for me that he really IS missed. you don't have to go out of your way or anything...just next time you see him. thanks voice...
i guess you didn't get the gist of what i wrote... but i would like to know on what basis you've drawn your conclusions?; and are you implying that the learned rabbi is unable to draw the same conclusions while working in their midst? has it occured to you that this happened in the united states; not in saudi arabia? and has it occured to you that it's people with your outlook, among ALL religions, who keep this sort of interaction from happening more frequently. do you realize that it's people exactly like you who are behind what you describe in "muslim" countries? did you know that the vast majority of religions in the united states are a gift to us from the middle-east? so who knows; maybe WE can return the gift with the spark of religious harmony... did you know that i'm a "dreamer"? did you know that without dreams there would be no change? call them "concepts", "ideas", "flashes", whatever you like. without them, and the people with "courage" enough to defy the status quo and to act on them; we would still be living in caves and huddling together for warmth as we cringe in fear of the creatures who prowl outside in the night.
I agree with this sort of thing. Keep up the good work!
May Peace remain with them.
please note that it was the moslems who protected the jews in Spain and other countries. Please do not forget what your christian brothers did to you in Spain and Germany, Poland....ETC. You Jews have very short memory.
Even in 'moderate' Turkey there is no conversion out of Islam. In modern Egypt, if one parent, even if divorced, converts to Islam, his children must become Muslim. If you believe that Muslim tolerate other religions as equal, please point it out to me. Sorry, but that award has nothing to do with tolerance, but with getting a secure foothold and respectability in America. And the interfaith-outreach rabbis never create tolerant Muslims, just Jews willing to further the Muslim agenda. But don’t fret, works exactly the same with Muslim outreach programs directed at Christians, turning them into ‘Peace Now’ and ISM little supporters.
and how it COULD be... it's another seed sown which i hope will sprout and grow... it's people like THESE who shall inherit the earth...muslims, jews, christians, hindus, zoroastrians, et al... but it sure is quiet in this blog-og-og-og. i wonder why-eye-eye-eye? well i'm sure someone will be here soon to slam me-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee...
Maybe it is time for communities to show that this can happen. enough violence. we all need to learn to be more tolerant-what kind of world will we leave for our children to have. kudos to this islamic center-may others take lead from this.
