Majadele calls on PM, Peretz to probe desecration of Muslim graves
Minister says 'despicable' act aimed at hurting peace chances, 'settlers lost their humanity.'
By Amos HarelMinister of Science, Culture, and Sport Raleb Majadele called on Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Defense Minister Amir Peretz on Sunday to intervene and investigate the desecration by Jewish worshippers of a Muslim cemetery in a village near the West Bank settlement of Ariel on Friday.
The minister wrote in a letter to Olmert and Peretz: "The settlers lost their humanity and destroyed their last remnants of legitimacy in the Israeli public."
"This is a despicable act, entirely targeted at damaging the chances of peace between the peoples," Majadele wrote.
A group of some 1,300 Jews visited the tomb of Joshua Ben Nun on Thursday night, in full coordination with the Israel Defense Forces.
On Friday morning, after the Jewish worshippers had left, Palestinians informed leftist groups that several tombstones in the local Muslim graveyard had been vandalized. Some were smashed; others were sprayed with slogans reading "death to Arabs."
The Civil Administration filed a complaint with police.
Police and the IDF repaired the damages to the cemetery on Sunday.

We DO have to look at the good....I commend the IDF and settlers and others who are abhorred by violence form all sides. THESE are the people who will make peace. There good and bad people from both sides. We have to keep this in mind all the time. I am guilty of overgenralizations and blanket-statements. I try not to, but I fail sometimes. There could be SO MUCH more beaty in the region. So much more prosperity and calm if more acted like these Israeli's who helped to clean it up, I admire the women in Palestine who are trying to make things bettre, help with chnages in mindsets and behaviours. We all share ONE world, we got to act with one heart when it comes to decency and helping our neighbors.
Minister Majadele concludes from the actions of a few people that "the settlers lost their humanity". Since Arabs have been regularly desecrating Jewish cemeteries (such as Joseph's Tomb and the Hebron cemetery) for decades, I can only presume that Majadele believes that the Arabs lost their humanity a long time ago.
this is such an abhorrent act. Jews should know better than to behave like this.
All individuals involved this heinous act must be punished.
Getting your news on the israeli-palestinian conflict from the mainstream media is like telling the time by looking at the big hand. THe arab propoganda has succeeded in defaming and demonizing Israel. One who claims an occupation, must disregard the relevance and the facts found in verfiable history, which attests to a jewish presence predating any known palestinian state. THe jews reclaimed the land in a war started by the jordanians and egyptions were in control of these territories. The jews have every historical lands as LIBERATED territory. Beside this the palestinians have refused and derailed any peace arrangement israel has tried to initiate. Oslo=2nd intifada, disengagement=jihadist hamas, qassam rockets indiscriminately launched on civilian centers. THe palestinians r the aggressors they want war. palestinian apologists are pathetic who apologize for the arab behavior based on wacko history and relativist pseudo progressive dogma's. Get out of the ivory tower!!!
or all those jewish grave stones desecrated with swatstikas and broken all over Europe.
As a Jew and a Zionist, reading about the latest settler outrage just disgusted me. If what they did happened to a Jewish cemetary in, say, France or Germany, we as Jews would be demanding investigations, arrests etc. It is time, for the sake of a Jewish state in Israel, to stop tolerating settler lawbreaking in the occupied territories. It pains me to read the Israeli media these days -- every day, I see more and more evidence of how Israel is becoming an intolerant, law-breaking banana republic
Majadele's blanket statement about "the settlers" is bigoted and a double-standard. when pali-terrorists attack israeli civilians, i'm sure he says 'well, they don't represent all palestinians.' Furthermore, Haaretz coverage of this incident is heavily biased against Israel. see what they left out: http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1181228585803&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull "Work crews comprised of IDF soldiers, settlers, and civil administration representatives repaired overnight Saturday several graves in a Muslim cemetery near Ariel that were vandalized on Friday by a group of Jewish worshipers who came to pray at the grave of Yehoshua Bin-Nun...The IDF apologized for the incident...Rabbis for Human Rights and the Anti-Defamation League also condemned the attack over the weekend."
Salt of the earth these "settlers"? One can only imagine how welcome they will be, once back in Israel.
How does he know that it was settlers, unless he considers all Jews in Israel settlers. This was done by a few and there were thousands there including Jews from all over Israel. I don't remember Majadele saying anything after Joseph's Tomb was destroyed completely by Palestinians.
The same crew have been known to assasinate Israeli Prime ministers if they look like making peace with the Palastinians.
hope of 2000 yrs for us to elect a stranger over us so that he may caste us harmful. How contemptible is a citizenry that allows such indignation to occur. Woe unto a nation that would have stranger to lead it in castigation towards oblivion. Its time to find zionism once again, remember the justice of our cause. And initiate reforms in political membership within the jewish state that profiles on jewish values and abstractions.
Yes it is despicable to desecrate any grave, and it should be dealt witha ccordingly. But enough already with every act being Israels fault at disturbing a peace process that does not exist! Palestinina terror acts/rockets on Israeli population and school kids is not bad for the so called peace process and reconciliation between our people??? Come on - get a grip at reality and don't mix meat with milk, as teh saying goes!
...when I heard an Arab accusing someone else of "losing their humanity". Coffee actually came down my nose I laughed that hard. With saying that however I cannot defend the desecration of a graveyard...belonging to any religion. But most of the desecrations of cemeteries in the world are committed by Muslims against Jews.
By comparison between judaism and islam there is no comparison. Violence is acceptable in the koran, where beating your wife in submission can be a religous dictate. As for muslim behavior in Israel, it is all about terror, incite to terror and celebrate terror (9/11 the dancing in the arab cities throughout israel) People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. it is the height of hypocracy when arabs in Israel play the victim. This is one Jew who won't buy it. No matter how much propoganda spewed, no matter how popular the occupation myth has become, no matter how much history is rewritten, the truth is they are the agressors in this conflict, refusing any jewish soveriegnty to exist and when the jews fight back we are cast as the agressor.what a absurd joke that majadle tries to portray once again the jews as the agressor now that he sits in the cabinet of the jewish state.he represents the 5th column...an odious & despicable demograph!!
A terrible act of vandalism by a small minority of the more than 1 thousand people there. It should be noted that the organizers also condemned this and made the repairs.
