Livni slams Netanyahu for 'delegitimization' of Israel

During Knesset debate, Netanyahu defends government, says opposition should behave more respectfully.

Opposition leader Tzipi Livni on Wednesday blamed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government for the "delegitimization" of Israel, amid continuing international criticism of the country's winter offensive in Gaza.

"Israel has been delegitimized, and its position has been eroded," Livni told the Knesset plenum. "[The government] has hurt Israel's ability to receive legitimacy for justified military operations."

Livni further said that the time had come for the prime minister to make a decision on the stalled peace process with the Palestinians.

Netanyahu, who was present during the session, defended the activities of his government over the past eight months and demanded that the opposition behave in a "respectful" manner.

He spoke about his government's willingness to enter into peace talks with the Palestinians, despite their "attempts to avoid negotiations."

"From the first moment, the Palestinian side did not respond to our request to begin negotiations," said Netanyahu. "Instead, we received demands and preconditions."

The premier added that he had never demanded any preconditions to the talks.

Netanyahu also noted that since becoming prime minister, he had lifted many West bank checkpoints.

So much land? Unfortunately for your thesis, the land belongs to someone else. Perhaps if Israel were to give back the land it expropriated (for which read stole) and stop its incessant efforts to steal more (settlements, e.g.) there wouldn't be the squeeze. If you keep taking what is others', they will squeeze you to get it back.

only as "better" and "worst". to a certain extent, this is true of all countries; but for some reason, it's especially evident in israel... and because in practice, they ALL rely more on talk to profess what they see as politically expedient, rather than what their views actually are, it's hard to distinguish which is worse and which is better. livni's views are more akin to netanyahu's than not; yet her rhetoric is a world apart from his. so which is worse? there's really no telling. livni "sounds" like she's better to many of us; but is she really?

Bibi hold tough! You're doing a brilliant job of leadership to protect your people and Eretz Israel. Livni and Kadima seem to want to give in to Hammas and Hussein Obama anti-Israel demands.Return God's people back to the land He gave them.

Livni's warmth toward the US State Dept position (ie Obama's pressure on Israel) is a bad mistake. President Obama's credibility in the USA is sinking like a stone. His pressure on Israel encourages PA hostility and that really spoils the "Peace Process". Why should the PA negotiate when the USA virtually tells them wait until we press Israel to first give in to your demands.

"Netanyahu Lacks Vision and Courage to Effect change" - Vladek Not true. He has a firm vision and is pursuing the changes necessary to effect it. His goals are "One Nation, One People, and One Leader." And that is where he is leading Israel. Israel likes they way he is going too.

The only thing that stopped Kadima from joining the coalition as almost a full equal was Tzipi's insistence that she be Prime Minister, even if at the end of the government's tenure. Kadima was a movement of balance and reform of Israel's governance whose effectiveness depended on being members of the government. An opposition led from the "center" is a non-sequitir. Is Tzipi so sure that Bibi will indeed fail, even if EU and USA pressure turns into abandonment of Israel, which is not even likely? So what is she on about?..why sour grapes, for her mistakes in mis-negotiating the coalition. And I really thought she was going to be a breath of fresh air.

livni is worst than liberman! at least liberman had an agenda thats why they joined the gov. the coward livni who had no real agenda to be in coalition refused to be with rightists likud(which they separated from) in coalition and forced netanyahu to have coalition with racists! the only responsible for Liberman's rise is LIVNI! Liberman being FM is one of the major reasons decline of popularity of isr in europe! For this we can thank to livni who refused to be with good nationalist's and left the state in the hands of racists! Livni tried to sell israeli land to arabs when she failed sold israel to racists! bravo With livnis help Kadima may have the shortest life in history of israel. we all knew kadima was Sharon and after Sharon kadima meant nothing!!

...even though she is a war criminal who will soon face the Hague. Bibi says no preconditions? Palestinains must do all the things he listed in his spech, forget about East Jerusalemn and forget about having a real state with true sovereignty. Nope. Bibi has already made his offer; about the same deal as the Gaza Disengagement Plan. All Abbas wants is for Israel to show good faith, comply with Raod Map obligations, and stop building illegal colonies. That's not asking for anything except for Israel to comply with the law. Why should Iran give a tinkers damn about the UN? Bibi does not, so as far as I'm concerned more power to Iran. You folks deserve what you get.

Wasn't it Netanyahu who started this tit-for-tat preconditions by asking the Palestinians to recognize Israel as a Jewish State? Then Abbas added the precondition about stopping building settlements. Are we really serious about peace???

Sanctions and boycotts are needed on a cruel & racist repressive israel that cowardly drops bombs on UN buildings, schools, playhouses & hospitals. Israel defies all international calls on halt of settlements & rejects the calls for a Palestinian state from the hand that feeds it. Israel is cruel & racist repressive regime that rejects International calls for standing trial on war crimes and rejects to sign the NPT. It will be interesting to see how long Israel can last without stupid America`s support - before it yields and begins to act like a civilized nation

No preconditions? Right. Only if you accept that established boilerplate preconditions don't count...like the precondition that the other side be surrounded by a wall, have no government or military, and renounce violence, while Israel, far from renouncing violence, has the most massive force in the region. Yeah, that seems pretty balanced.

in 'a respectful manner'??? Was she chewing gum or wearing a swimsuit or something? He doesn't mean I hope that, because he's the PM, he's entitled to respect aka not to be criticised, lampooned? His ego and inflated self-importance are getting rather out of control. The duty of the opposition is to oppose. Free speech is what it says. People who want respect have to earn it first. He hasn't begun to do that yet, outside the narrow domestic group of rightist cheerleaders.

Sure Netanyahu had no "preconditions" for negotiations.Israel is the much stronger party in the conflict,it can just do what it wants (see Gilo issue),and if it doesn't like something the other side does,it can just impose its will(more checkpoints, restrictions, incursions etc.).Under these circumstances Netanyahu does not need to demand "preconditions" from the Pals, he can pretty much just do what ever he wants to be done. The Pals on the other side have to hold on to any straw they can grasp in order to have at least some leverage on the Israeli side.Since 1993 (Oslo, remember?) the number of settlers in the WB and East Jerusalem has grown by over 200'000,especially during the 90s when peace negotiations where still dragging on.To repeat this mistake and allow Israel to let the number of settlers skyrocket while negotiating for years would be indeed very stupid. The PA cant jst do what it wants, they need any leverage. Well done Netanyahu 4 not having "preconditions"!!

Many nations want to blame Israel for what is really the intolerance and greed of Arabs (by trying to reduce the tiny Jewish nation into a non-defensible entity). So much land and so why the squeeze on the Jews?! It's not a coincidence. Europe is only too happy to lend its "legal tools" to assist the creation of a Pal state that would present another launching pad for more powerful missiles. Still waiting on Pal recognition of The Jewish State.... I wish that anti-semetism doesn't exist but it does. If you can't handle it, then convert.

Too much of Netanyahu's support comes from settlers and alliances with leaders like Lieberman who are ideologues or zealots. Netanyahu has put a priority on settlements rather than a vision for peace. The settlers and the IDF know his weakness and exploit it in open rebellion. Peace comes through courage and leadership. Pandering to a small group and neglecting the broader vision for Israel will in the end destroy Israel. At one time many Israelis and others thought the Saudi 2002 plan for peace was feasible. It is time to grab what makes sense and advance it aggresively while the time is right. The settlers are too committted to restoring an ancient kingdom rather than the realities of sustaining a Jewish state in a secular world.
