Livni: 'Certain elements in Egypt' fueling row over film on 1967 war
Gheit to receive copy of film; Ben-Eliezer denies claim that troops under his command executed Egyptian POWs.
By News Agencies and Haaretz ServiceForeign Minister Tzipi Livni, meeting Tuesday with her Egyptian counterpart in Brussels, expressed Israel's concerns over unsubstantiated reports by "certain elements in Egypt" that a new film documents an Israel Defense Forces massacre of Egyptian soldiers in the 1967 Six-Day War.
The allegations arose from media reports about material included in Edelist's film "Ruach Shaked" (The Spirit of Shaked), which aired on Channel 1 television in Israel last week.
Media reports claim that Minister Benjamin Ben-Eliezer's Shaked commando unit executed 250 Egyptian prisoners-of-war in the Sinai peninsula immediately after the cessation of hostilities, rather than transfer them to prison camps.
During a meeting with her Egyptian counterpart, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Livni voiced "Israel's concern that certain elements in Egypt are misrepresenting the documentary film 'The Spirit of Shaked', without checking the facts or substantiating what actually happened, with the intent of sabotaging our two countries' relationship."
Livni asked Gheit to move to dispel the ill-feeling in Egypt on this issue. She stressed to Gheit that the issue was not a massacre of prisoners of war, but rather the deaths of soldiers in battle.
The Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem said Tuesday that a copy of the film and a script of the narration will be passed on to Gheit.
The official Middle East News Agency said Tuesday that Gheit has also asked Israel to launch an inquiry into the allegations.
"Egypt will see Israel's position in the next few days and, in light of that position, it will deal with the situation on the regional, international and legal levels if Israel does not move," MENA quoted Gheit as saying.
"The Egyptian people and Egyptian society [are] extremely angry, and we hope that that issue will be tackled in a manner that understands and feels that Egyptian anger," Gheit said.
The claims have been flatly denied by Ben-Eliezer and by Ron Edelist, who made the documentary.
Ben-Eliezer cancelled his scheduled visit to Egypt this week in the wake of the row. He was to have met with Egyptian Chief of Intelligence Omar Suleiman on Thursday.
Edelist said in remarks broadcast Monday that the media reports misrepresented the material in the film. He said the dead were not Egyptian POWs, but Palestinian fedayeen fighters, and that they were killed in the heat of battle, not executed.
According to Edelist, hardline opposition elements in Egypt had misrepresented the facts and the message of the film in order to attack Israel's peace treaty with Egypt, signed in 1979.

I have no proof 250 Egyptians were executed not interned in a POW camp in JUNE 1967 but to be quite honest with you with Egypt I heard rumors it may have been more than 250 that Israel executed all Egyptian POWS who they felt exceeded learned how to WAGE WAR BETTER ??? from even this defeat they knew America wanted the Suez Canal re opened that war might be the only alternative to do it war then the Sadat Peace Deal to re open the Suez Canal so as high as 2 500 not just mere 250 is the real rumor actually the documentary movie film shown last week tones down the numbers to the lowest rumor of 250 not originial rumor of 2 500 WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THAT... RIGHT... THANK YOU... M. Segal
I did not see view watch the show movie documentary thus may not judge what it contained how is it possible this film was regarded as a admission after 40 years of Israeli war crimes in 1967 I seriously doubt Israel would admit to such a crime did the author photographer show documentary evidence film made at that time showing this war crime if so sounds pretty stupid to show it not hide it in Mossads secret vaults RIGHT ??? I seriously doubt 250 Egyptians were executed before internment in a POW camp RIGHT this is stupidly gross HOW FAR MAY IT GO... TO WAR... RIGHT ??? THANK YOU... M. Segal
about Egypt. the Egyptians didnt make this up, it came from israel. when the enemy is telling me i killed 250 of your unarmed men during a war we had, what do you expect egypt to say about it. israel will have to deal with the trouble it has started. as if the peace between the two didnt need anymore mistrust or animosity. israel is going to have to wait until an Egyptian film maker says the same about egypt. so far it's israel that needs to explain it's self. not the first time might i add.
Now, can I expect your support in lobbying the US to return my people's US land so I can become a landowner and not a plot owner! I sure do support your view on that, but won't hold my breath waiting for it. My cherokee/black paternal grandfather would turn over in his grave with gratitude to you for the return of at least the stolen Cherokee's land of which I can PROVE I am a beneficiary!!! Regards and keep blogging!
The reason "Israel`s public image is the worst in the world" is that too many people like yourself are eager to believe the worst about it, and to rely on harebrained conspiracy theories and old wives tales for that purpose. If you read the articles you will see that this is a non-story and there is nothing to investigate. There are fabricated allegations that claim to rely on a documentary film. All it takes to see the fabrication is to watch the film. On the other hand, if it makes you feel better to have the court in the Hague put the videocassette in the VCR, watch the film and then issue a ruling, by all means, it's your tax money that's paying for it. In fact, why stop here? There are enough Arab conspiracy theories to keep the ICJ busy round the clock from here to eternity.
and authors-e.g. ariel toaff.
Like in Lebanon in Hariri's case, which Israel supports. If Israel has nothing to hide certainly they are willing to participate in this international court. If Israel has something to hide of course they say no. What would be Livni's answer? No most probably. International courts are only for "arabs". No wonder that Israel's public image is the worst in the world.
yes there are other issues "needing tending to." Hope you did not have a sleepless night waiting for my reply. Question: A fine person like yourself must be proud of your "superior" logic in your answers to my "baseless" questions? Yes? No? Another question: Do the Jews keep you up at night? Yes? No?
"are we arabs? " Given a choice between answering that question 'yes' or answering it 'no,' I'll answer it 'yes.' In almost all respects, Israel is much more an Arab country than she is a Western European country. Now when you quit denying it, we'll be half-way to peace.
There is no surprise here that Jewish film makers would make such documentary..The only thing is that Arabs do not have equivalents and yet their societies in dire need if they are to be normal and descent.. As far as material, where Arab armies , organizations and individual Arabs have committed atrocities (which in Arab world is considered as legitimate fight) is multiple. These Jewish filmmakers carry on the typical Jewish tradition to fight for everybody's rights and so called truth, even if Jewish interests are damaged..These people get up in the morning and they are full righteous smugness . Basically they are idiots, since our enemies do not make distinction what kind of Jew they kill, as long it is a Jew.
why would the israeli government specially the media dignify it by making it "new worthy". such a hairbrained, ridiculous accusation. are we arabs? cutting off the heads of inocent people? or blowing up their own kind, children women, old people at mosques and market places? lets have some common sense here, and just IGNORE THEM!
A resolution condemning Israel, opposed only by the U.S. and Micronesia, followed perhaps by a trial in the ICJ. When it comes to making up massacres out of thin air, no one beats the Arabs. The spirit of Jenin lives on. What the hell does it mean "Egypt will see Israel's position in the next few days and, in light of that position, it will deal with the situation on the regional, international and legal levels if Israel does not move,"? How about sticking the damn videotape in the VCR and watching the documentary?
It is a pity that Ron Edelist could not find a proper topic for a film and that the Egyptians are so happy about breading and perpetuating lies. The Egyptians quickly forgot how they treated, in the past, POWs and how human life has been of little value to them. It would be much more helpful for Israeli filmmakers to concentrate on documentaries that could bring improvement to Israeli society and the future of the Jewish people. If Ron Edelist needs help with topics for documentaries, I would be happy to help him.
The actual circumstances surrounding this are much less important that the accusation itself. Just like the palestinian lie of the Jenin 'massacre', the Mugarabi Gate repair or countless other stories. Whatever the final outcome, 95% of the Egyptian as well as the al-jazerra viewing audience will accept the accusation as fact. Who remembers the UN inquiry that cleared Israel of any so called massacre in jenin as opposed to those who still talk about the 'mnassacre'? Arab versions of history are based on such lies. From the time Israel was founded with the Arab call for Arabs to leave the area until the mighty armies of Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, etc. dispose of the Zionist problem, Arab 'history' has been one of lies, twisted facts and ommissions. Truth is not an object for Arabs. The disappearance of the reason for the 'nakba' is.
on yesterday's blog where you posted them. Any other issues needing tending to? Regards.
Question: Is it possible for Egypt to prove its accusations against Israel by hiring ariel toaff to discredit Ron Edelist's explanation of what was actually portrayed in his own film?
They are our cousins like the feud between the Hatfields and McCoys. The Nazis are still the Nazis like booger picker Hollingsworth who disappeared and Hanoi Dane David Puke.
Let Arab States do it too. I have often heard of Israeli POWs being decapitated or shot by the Syrians.
"Excuse me, can you probe the allegations we just came up with that place a blood libel on you and your countrymen?" "If you find it false, we reserve the right to attack you for 1) lying to us and 2) humiliating us by finding out we lied" "By the way, we reserve the right, during this process, to add any additional allegations, falsehoods, and protests to the UNSC in order to pressure you to accept our view of things - even to the point of global violent protests" What sick bunch of @&%^$*(@@@!!! The typical blood libel by Arabs and a "forced confession" under the pressure of international politics. Rather than spend so much money on the media and this tirade, why not just hire a good translator. Egyptians - aren't you a bit annoyed that your government has alot of time to do this and your economy sucks??
Why do we need people making documentaries of the 1967 war? We have had other wars and are still at war, so why drag up old facts now!!
Is this some sort of Egyptian sop to their Islamists? Where does it stop? What exactly are they looking for? What kind of investigation will satisfy them if they refuse to believe what the documentary maker says is in his documentary? Is it politically correct to ask the Egyptians to do the same?
of a documentary depicting a 1967 IDF "massacre" said that the Egyptian media has distorted the facts presented in his film. The Channel 1 report, Ruah Shaked (The Spirit of Shaked) aired last week, claimed that the elite Shaked unit, led by National Infrastructures Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, had killed 250 fighters in Sinai towards the end of the Six Day War. Ran Ederlist, the producer, told Army Radio that the Egyptian reports badly distorted his documentary. He said the incident did not involve unarmed Egyptian prisoners of war, but rather Palestinian fighters killed in the heat of battle while the war was still raging. "What happened was that there were (Israeli) fighters waging battle against a retreating (Palestinian) commando battalion," said Ederlist. "During this battle, you could say there was excessive use of force, (but) it was all in the context of war - not prisoners, not prisoner-of-war camps, not people who put their hands up." Once again, the left and Arabs caught lying.
where are the bodies, first you must have the evidence against the country that commited the crime. then you can investigate them of the crime.
