Lieberman: Turkey's 'anti-Israel' line must not kill our ties
In Azerbaijan, Foreign Minister urges Turkey to make amendments to policy of 'weekly' condemnation.
By Haaretz Service Tags: Goldstone report Turkey Israel news Avigdor LiebermanForeign Minister Avigdor Lieberman on Tuesday said that Israel would strive to salvage its strained relations with Turkey despite Ankara's "weekly" condemnations.
"Every week to sharply condemn Israel, to say Israeli military forces have carried out genocide, to call operations to protect our citizens 'a crime against humanity," Lieberman said at the start of a three-day visit to Azerbaijan. "This sharp anti-Israeli line cannot be repeated every week."
"For 10 years we have supported very close and friendly relations with Turkey," Lieberman said. "The recent changes in Turkey's foreign policy concepts were unexpected to us and not entirely clear. We are doing everything we can in order to preserve relations at their previous, very trustful level and to maintain close cooperation in all areas."
"We hope that Turkey from its side will make certain amendments to its foreign policy concept," he added.
Diplomatic relations between long-time allies Israel and Turkey deteriorated over a sequence of incidents since the 2008 Gaza offensive, which Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his cabinet adamantly criticized.
The tension flared again last month after Lieberman's deputy, Danny Ayalon, humiliated Turkish envoy Ahmet Oguz Celikkol during a meeting to protest an anti-Israel television program that aired in Turkey.
Before that meeting Ayalon told photographers in Hebrew: "Pay attention that he is sitting in a lower chair and we are in the higher ones, that there is only an Israeli flag on the table and that we are not smiling."
Ayalon issued a formal apology over the matter, but Erdogan later warned Israel to "take another look at its relations with its neighbors" if it wants to maintain ties with Ankara in the future.
"Israel should give some thought to what it would be like to lose a friend like Turkey in the future," Erodegan told Euronews, regarding his thoughts on the recent tensions.
"The way they recently treated our ambassador has no place in international politics," said Erdogan.

... go figure this out...
Simon of Sydney, don't get into high gear and shower Turkey with worn-out accusations. Your accusations are as bad as the ones made against Israel. Turkey and Israel, as the only democratic countries in the region will always have good relations despite brutes like Erdogan and Lieberman.
Just stop for searching stupid reasons why Turkey is not always saying YES to Israel s politic, just make a search in your mind for stupid ideas...
Eventhough I dont wanna argue with anyone in blogs I observe that u always reply my comments. Ok! this reply is for u!! You claim that before ayalon, Erdogan insulted Israel, that s why, tension has rised. No, Ehud olmert was the person behind this. coz He was in turkey just 2-3 days before ur Gaza operations and he met and talked with Erdogan about peace process w/ syria and the result was so close. But he did not say anything about the operation which directly effects the relations with Syria. this was a clear betrayal for Erdogan and He showed his reaction to a wise Israeli politician in davos. but u can not compare it with the diplomatic-official insult of Ayalon. As to Antalya issue, i have some Israeli friends and i love them. And, do u know that the people behaving badly to the jews were punished? Nobody punished Ayalon!!! He just apologised.
And Turkey will reject it. Forget about traded insults, the central issue is that Turkey has now buddied-up with Iran, which has made financial offers that could not be refused. Dumping Israel was part of the deal. So its time to acknowledge that Israel was used for her advanced weapons for a couple of decades, and now Turkey has moved on. Hopefully, that weapon technology won't be used against you.
'Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman on Tuesday said that Israel would strive to salvage its strained relations with Turkey despite Ankara's "weekly" condemnations.' He manages to give the impression he really doesn't realize his own role in bringing this about. Make him Prime Minister. Please.
For starters - eliminate all low chairs from diplomatic meeting rooms - so you may not be "led into temptation" to use them on your visitors. David
Dear David I would strongly disagree with you that all Turks and muslims are wellcome and well treated in Israel. As Israel is the only Apartheid state which discriminate its citizens on the basis of their religion, race (ashkenazim, safaratit and at the end the black ethiopian jews). The muslims from the WB forget gaza haven't been able to go and worship their fate in the temple mount for decades. Arkadash be my guest and let me show you the true face of your belowed Israel. Shalom min Jerushalym and layla tove
Remember Amos , Abraham Lincoln was a bartender and also one of the best US presidents and world-wide honored and revered leaders. of all history. Remember that Amos you silly little man
And many Jews around the world as well as most Israelis share my opinion about the bad behavior of Mr. Ayalon and his boss Lieberman in the treatment of the honorable Turkish Ambassador. However I would also ask your INSAF when you attack Israel and remember that it all started with your PM Erdogan's unacceptable unfair, untrue and baseless accusations at Davo9s over a year ago which continued with more talks and some hostile actions by the Turkish government. may I add to this some of the ill educated Turks' bad behavior against Israeli/Jewish tourist such as in Antalya 2 years ago some stores had signs - No Jews Allowed - and a restaurant in the north a sign highly publicized - Jews and Dogs Not Allowed - In Israel Turks and Muslims are always welcome and well treated. Please visit Israel and see for yourself Show a little bit INSAF OK?
The unfortunate reality of Turkish politics recently is that when AKP and his party is in trouble and their support in decline they change the real subject such as the recent strike and hunger strike by the tobacco monopoly workers by lashing out to Israel. On the other hand AKP keeps on buying arms from Israel, gives government bids to remove land mines to Israel in exchange of land leases to Israel etc. And yesterday there was a news item in Hurriyet about the up coming Armenian Genocide bill to the USA congress. This means FM Davutoglu will be needing Israel's support very soon. My guess is Mr. Lieberman was trying to imply something to him. Hosca kal.
Deciding to name as Foreign Minister somebody of the quality of Lieberman reflects the contempt of Israël for all international partners. Then it is farcical to be surprised of their attitude in return. Another exemple showing this selection is deliberate is given by the Minister for Tourism.
Where is the big community of Jewish People of Thessaloniki? After second world war, they don't exist anymore..:( What happened to them? Where were Orthodox Bishops of Athens to avoid that? Or they just closed their eyes like Three Monkies? And now, They say about the barbarism!
I could believe what he says if he did not test the power of his state by insulting Turkish ambassador first. Now he says that they should respect us. Well, Insult first and wait for respect later. Ok...
place in the relationship between civililzed countries. Perhaps Lieberman is correct when he expresses dismay over the comments of some Turkish politicians and officials. Nevertheless, trying to publicaly humiliate an accredited diplomat, has no purpose at all. It is not as if he, or Turkey as a whole, will suddenly know "their place," and behave in the subservient role which Lieberman has scripted for them. The purpose of diplomats is to resolve or at least manage the relationship between states in a polite and rational manner. If there are reasons be concerned about the Turkish attitudes towards Israel, then the ambassador is at worse, a part of the means through which these concerns can be addressed and communicated to the Turkish government, and at best, a part of its resolution itself. The stunt with the seats and the flag, are really for the psychological gratification of Lieberman and Ayalon rather than anyone else.
If Israel does not want friends, will not have friends... This is the time to think mature, why Turkish Goverment talks like that... And there may be some true points... Instead of this, to reject all the criticising will lead nothing... Understanding starts with true perceptions and the will for percieve... "True Friends are saying harsh way!" may be a true statement... And friendship will only bring benefit to all... Just try to understand even 1% may be a true criticising...
except Turkey in the Muslim World and USA in the West. The rest of the World hate israel deep in their hearts. wake up israel and correct your mistakes before becomming too late!
Please, for Israel's sake! Why do we need a FM who is better in starting wars than making peace??
You make Avigdor Lieberman sound like Emily Dickinson.
thanks but no thanks we are done with isreal you can go on with your anti turkısh stance ı have seen enough comment here that ı wouldnt even expect from an enemy the only thing we turks can do from now on is wish luck to you
Let's try and understand this mind set. His Ministry exhibits the utmost contempt to Turkey's envoy in the most blatant and vulgar way, and he wonders why? Turkey, along with most of the civilised world condemns actions carried out in Operation Cast Lead that had nothing to do with Israel's security, and this is cause for Israel to make Turkey squirm? liberman publically declares that any criticism of Israel or its occupation or its support of further colonisation of EJ and the WB is tantamount to anti-semitism, and they wonder why? Israel has dug its own hole and the rest of the world is sick and tired of being told that it put Israel there. Get a diplomat to lead the Ministry not a pitbullish demogogue. Israel has enough of that ilk as it is.
Israel needs friend from anywhere. No nation on earth has any need for ties or friendship with Israel. This makes it surprising when Israelis go out of their way to insult, offend, and demean the people and leaders of other nations. It doesn't get "fixed" by making insincere statements. It makes it worse.
Lieberman's latest declaration epitomises so much of what is currently wrong with political leaders in Israel. It is always someone else's fault, Israel is always in the right etc. If it wasn't so sad it would be funny.
Whether turks have contributed the civilization or not is a different matter. Bear in mind that this sort of accusations come from the uncivilized part of people's brain. We know there is/was a reason as people feared of turks for centuries in the europe but they haven't been able to invade any country for the last 3 centuries. Can somebody tell me why may people hate or do not like jew a cross the globe? Is there any logical reason OF COURSE NOT. This government(Erdogan) will not be in power forever. We must be patient and wise enough
I think this guy is in need of a holiday !!! or even worse of some PR classes. Power has never been the language of the so called "powerful". Peace and only peace can resolve the problems of Israel with its neighbours.
#2 #6 Don't forget that the turks are the only nation who did not kill the jews, they was always very good to them and if the jews and Israel want to win again the hearts of the turks, please sit on the table and start to work very hard for peace with:Palestinians, lebanese,Syrians and Iranians, only then Turkey will be garant for the security of atate of Israel and will become very close friend again!
Democracy is not only election of a party and a leader by the people. its also a system of understandings synthesis and tolerance of course which have limits. but if u limit it too much its no democracy. with democratisation as u call it Mr Erdogan and his democrat army has accused and put in jail many writers and newspaper columnists. who were opposed to him. and just with false accusations they call Ergenekon conspiracy. they put in jail many dirty people(like mafia) with the clean opposition writers politicians soldiers. and these people re not proven guilty they dont even know the accusations. one writer says they told me i was accused for 'restraning the turkish parliament from functioning and trying to start armed revolt'. the guy is one of the best opposition writers and he has no such power never intended to do it i read the guy. an other incident my GF and i sittin in the park talking and just kissin.the police of the democratic country beat me up just for that.what a democr
"Israel would strive to salvage its strained relations with Turkey" Is not Israel,is you.You start the mess and then you said "Israel has to fix it" Crook!!!
...ruin what is left of the image of Israel!
Never forget liebermans' contribution to the present state of relations, and of course keep in mind his right hand's contribution to it. that is how things are, a genious is a genious and a bouncer remains bouncer
With the recent democratisation in Turkey Israel have lost a lot of power on this country. It is not enough to have ties with the military and leave aside the public opinion that choose the governement. Israel with his policy "I want peace, but won't do anything to achieve it" can not be tolerated. And if Israel go further this path, they won't have any friends at all.
If Israel has friends like Turkey, then it doesn't need any enemies. As for the chair incident - no chair could ever be low enough for the Turks, the Israeli PM should have seated the Turk in the basement. As for criticizing Israel and using words like genocide - it's a bit like Jack the Ripper accusing others of murder. Turkey should leave the rhetoric to civilized countries to point out Israel's mistakes. As the Archbishop of Athens once remarked, the only contribution of the Turks to Europe has been barbarism. "The Turkish contribution to world civilization" - is one of the worlds shortest books.
I think both sides have made a speedy 'reconcilliation' virtually and practically impossible
