Lieberman tells Barak to outlaw major Arab leadership council
Minister tells Barak to use 1945 State of Emergency law to illegalize Higher Arab Monitoring Committee.

The committee is not fully recognized by Israeli authorities.
Lieberman, chairman of Yisrael Beiteinu, called on Barak to act upon the authority granted to him under the State of Emergency statute passed in 1945 under the British Mandate. The regulations defined by the statute allot the government overriding authority on a wide range of issues. The power to invoke a state of emergency supercedes the due process of the law.
In a letter sent to the defense minister, Lieberman wrote that "the Higher Arab Monitoring Committee, which challenges the Jewish people's right to self-determination, and encourages continuously and systematically the destruction of the State of Israel - its character, police, and institutions, as clearly demonstrated by the visionary document on the future of the Palestinian Arabs in Israel that they published - constitutes a real threat to the very existence of the State of Israel as a Jewish and Zionist state."
Lieberman slammed the committee for its recent harsh criticism of attempts to encourage the Arab sector to enlist in national service, warning that "actions like these incite hatred and dangerous lobbying for a civil revolt."
The minister wrote that he is "convinced wholeheartedly that the State of Israel cannot comply with actions intended to denounce its legitimacy," and said that Israel must act to condemn this kind of behavior in order to defend itself and promise itself a secure future.
Lieberman's letter enraged Arab party members. "His [Lieberman's] political glory always grew in the murky and filthy swamps of racism and hate," said Hadash Chairman MK Mohammad Barakeh.
His party colleague MK Dov Khenin also condemned Lieberman's demand, calling it another proposal designed to promote the "political transfer of the Arab public," and went on to say that Lieberman represents a threat to the democratic nature of Israel.
Labor MK Nadia Hilou, who sits with Lieberman in the government coalition, also had only harsh words for the proposal. While Hilou is an elected Arab MK, she does not sit in on Monitoring Committee meetings. Her position on national service is not in line with the committee's, as she is a strong proponent of incoporating Arab youth into the program.
However, she told Haaretz that "Lieberman blames, judges and rules. Who is he to rule out these bodies or others? He doesn't have the legitimacy to decided on matters having to do with democracy. The words and actions that he spearheads only promote extremism."

For the sake of peace in Israel should be as many arabs as are jews in the arab world. Even that equilibrium isn?t right, given that there are 22 arab states(the right number should be 1 and only under the strict supervision). In practice there should be zero arabs in Israel, period. In the 1930's, many Jews saw doom in their future if they stayed in Europe and they began a mass emigration to everywhere. For the same reason, the Arabs living in Israel should consider their options in the same way. As we progress farther into the 21st century, what nation is more likely than Israel to be a target of a major WMD attack?
Currently, there are 10 Arabs in the Israeli Knesset. One is the deputy Foreign Minister and acting Knesset Speaker. There used to be 11 but Azmi Bishara decided to break the law, provide aid and comfort to the enemy, and abandon his Knesset seat. At least learn the facts before criticizing?

I have to agree with you that Israel is at risk. Israelis have to most to gain from a peaceful existence with the Palestinians. I think they are at risk because of their ignorance. Israelis reality is the opposite of they pretend to be. Israelis are not the victims they are the oppressors, Israel is not a democracy and the world is just starting to realize that. I know that the majority of Israeli Jews want peace but the extremist minority are in charge of the country and they will lead Israel to a disaster. Israelis have to stand up to the extremists among them if they ever want to live in peace.

Lieberman is the archetype hawkish Israeli that more and more Americans and Europeans are learning to despise. What makes it sad, is that most Israelis want some form of negotiated peace with the Palestinians. At risk for Israel is the considerable financial aid that supports Israel's standard of living and defense. And perhaps, Israel's very existence may be at risk as well.

It's a painfully known fact that the 'Higher Arab Monitoring Committee' is against Israel as a Jewish and democratic state. They were the ones who came up with a brilliant vision of the Israeli Arabs to split Israel into 2 states - "Palestine" and a second state with no Jewish symbols, rendering it pretty much as a birth plan for 2 Arab states. Now they suddenly claim that Israeli Arabs should not join the National Service program instead of Army Service. They want all their rights, including national insurance and health care but no duties at all? And taxes? This committee's constant remarks ,which is also made out of many Arab MK's, boarders with betrayal and should indeed be branded illegal.

I see that the Arab riposte is in fact an attack on Lieberman...and not a response to the issues he raises, I assume, then, that in essence they acknowledge that some of the Arab Higher Committee's activity is geared towards undermining the foundations of the Israeli state. Ever hear of the Saudis? They are actively promoting hate around the world, including in Virginia, where the Feds are considering closing a Saudi school for teaching hate against infidels. The Mufti of Jerusalem before Israel existed, Hassan Al Banna in 1928, and the Wahhabi and Hanbali schools of thought, all promoted hate before there was an Israel. If you can't take into account the effect of that hate on Israel's development, your analysis is bound to be inaccurate. Not that Israel is perfect, but your overbroad soundbite criticism is even less so. At least qualify your criticisms so that they are rational.
