Lieberman blames Assad for stalled Israel-Syria peace talks

After Syrian President relays message to Israel, FM says Assad just wants to escape global isolation.

Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman on Sunday blamed Syrian President Bashar Assad for the impasse in Israel-Syria peace talks, after the Syrian leader recently signaled a willingness to return to the negotiating table.

"Assad is the one who is trying to escape international isolation and he is demanding preconditions of us," said Lieberman during an interview on Army Radio.

Last week Croatian President Stjepan Mesic relayed to President Shimon Peres a message from the Syrian president about the possibility of resuming peace negotiations between the two countries.

Following a conversation with the Syrian president, Mesic told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Peres that Assad had stressed that he is interested in resuming negotiations with Israel, but he insisted that the efforts be carried out indirectly, through third-party mediation.

In the Army Radio interview, Lieberman said there was no need for indirect talks with either the Syrians or the Palestinians.

"We are willing to sit with them as soon as this afternoon, but we want the talks to be direct," he said.

In response to a question about criticism of Lieberman's suitability to represent Israel as foreign minister and claims that he is like a "bull in a china shop," the minister said: "If I'm a bull in a china shop, then apparently the china is second rate, and the store is going out of business."

If the EU wanted to build a pipeline though Syria to Iraqi oilfields Israeli-Syrian negotiations would only increase that possibility as it would increase the Assad regimes legitimacy and undermine any Israeli objections. Now the bigot test: Do you honestly believe that would sign a peace agreement with Israel even if it would receive all the territory it lost up to the 67? border? Do you think they will stop providing material and logistical support to organizations still at war with Israel? (see Hamas and Hezbollah). Do you think they would end this cold war knowing that it would undermine the absolute authority of Assad and his cronies as it would take away their main justification for their emergency laws which suspended the constitution? Do you think that this regime would stop interfering in Lebanon and be comfortable surrounded by four democratic nations?

ummmm if you recall DHead, that syria broke off talks when you decided to kill innocent people and rightly so, the precondition is legal and standing, seeing that the whole world does NOT recgonise the golans as israeli but syrian land, so go to hell, because YOU will be the one that destroys israels international status for once and for good.

In other words, you don`t sand a child to do a man`s work! Yes Leberman has something there!

"Assad is the one who is trying to escape international isolation..." said Lieberman. Another clever statement from the Foreign Minister who is, with brilliant success, securing Israel's total isolation from every friend she ever had.

Chris #1, you are wrong and outdated the pipelines go thru Turkey because its proximity to the gas fields, the terrain and proximituy to the EU,Syria is not reliable to the point as Turkey is reliable. Syria does not anything to offer, on top of that the dependency on Iran is remarkable why?. no industry, no oil, no viable economy, zilch. Iarel is not in any hurry to aproacdh Assad,. Israel has the money, technology and the military with the real atomic weapons.

Assad believe with a sick mind he can dictate when and where and how talks with Israel can take place. The bottom lines is: Israel has the land Israel has the military power, Syria is the looser, no land and no military, Syria is an enemy who supports Hezbollah and Hamas. what makes Assad to talk so tough?.Liberman is right if he so desires he should come personally and lets talk, not thru any third parties because this way he is a goner

probably using a cartoon format will help. That actually rather than being globally isolated, there is a growing and continuing rapproachment by both the United states and the European Union. With several trade agreements about to be signed. Problem for Lieberman et al is the geographical position of Syria bodes well for laying an oil and gas pipelines from the oil and gas fields of both Iran and Iraq and thereby bypassing Russia. Which Lieberman will be aware flexed it's muscles last winter and provoked the realisation of just how reliant Europe was on Russia for it's energy needs. The real problem is that the current government of Israel despite Barak and Netanyahu's protestations do not want peace, or even a dialogue which might even lead to peace. Liebermans statement is merely a continuation of current Israeli policy, and is incredibly dangerous for Israel as outlined above. Israel is in danger of becoming irrelevant.
