Lieberman asks new UN chief to revoke Iran's membership
Iranian President scorns UN Security Council's imposition of sanctions over nuclear program.
By The Associated Press and Haaretz ServiceMinister of Strategic Threats Avigdor Lieberman on Tuesday sent a letter to new United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon asking him to revoke Iran's UN membership, Army Radio reported.
Lieberman also called to pressure the UN Security Council to impose significant sanctions on Iran, according to the radio. "If the world allows Iran to achieve nuclear capability, Israel will be the first to pay the price," he wrote.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad scorned the Security Council's imposing sanctions on Iran, telling a crowd Tuesday that Iran had humiliated the United States in the past and would do so again.
Speaking in the southwestern provincial capital of Ahvaz, Ahmadinejad said the Security Council's resolution of December 23 was invalid and had left the world body's reputation in tatters.
His speech made no referrence to series of bombings that have occurred in Ahvaz, believed to stem from tension between the city's Arabic-speaking community and the Farsi-speaking authorities. Nor did Ahmadinejad refer to the results of Iran's local elections of December 15, in which his political allies were heavily defeated.
The Security Council voted unanimously to bar all countries from selling materials and technology to Iran that could contribute to its nuclear and missile programs. It also froze the assets of 10 Iranian companies and 12 individuals related to those programs.
"Let the world know that from the Iranian nation's point of view, this resolution has no validity," Ahmadinejad said.
He said the United States was the main power behind the resolution, and warned Washington: "I want you to know that the Iranian nation has humiliated you many times, and it will humiliate you in future."
The United States has led the drive to stop Iran from enriching uranium - a process that produces the material for either nuclear reactors or bombs. Iran denies that it seeks to build atomic weapons, saying its nuclear program is limited to the generation of electricity.
Ahmadinejad said the sanctions were not important but were part of a campaign of psychological warfare against Iran that was designed to provoke dissent within the country.
"You are nobody," he told the Western powers. Recalling the West's support for Iraq, then ruled by Saddam Hussein, during its eight year war with Iran in the 1980s, he said: "If all the powers that supported Saddam in his war against Iran were to regroup and confront Iran again, Iranians would deliver a historic slap in their face"
Ahmadinejad said Iran had done everything it could to prove that its nuclear program is peaceful but the West, in the name of opposing nuclear weapons, was trying to thwart Iran's development.
"We have tried all legal, wise and logical ways to convince these corrupt and selfish powers," he said of the West.
While Ahmadinejad has repeatedly attacked the Security Council resolution, he has avoided any public comment on the results of the municipal elections of December 15.
The polls were seen as an electoral test of Ahmadinejad's presidency, and the success of his opponents suggested that voters want him to pay more attention to domestic issues rather than foreign policy - where he is fond of challenging the West by taking an inflexible line on the nuclear program and by calling for the destruction of Israel.
Some people in the crowd in Ahvaz on Tuesday tried to remind the president of the need to address domestic problems. State television showed a placard carried by one spectator that read: "Inflation, unemployment, insecurity, drug addiction have desiccated the tree of the revolution."
Inflation is officially at 12 percent but thought to be much higher, and an estimated 3 million people are unemployed.
Three bombings in Ahvaz, the capital of Khuzestan province, killed a total of 23 people and wounded dozens more in January 2006, and June and October 2005.
In July, a court condemned to death five Iranian Arab separatists for the blasts. An Iranian Arab insurgent group, the Arab Struggle Movement for the Liberation of Ahvaz, claimed responsibility for the January blast.

the world must united against the Iran racist and fascist dictator regime.they not only theatening the Israelbut also they murdering innocents non persian people in Iran.I hope we get rid off Hamas,Hizbulla and the terrorist regime of persia. freedom for all world down to persian racist ahmadinejad and his allies. freedom for al ahwaz.
If Israel and its allies do not act soon the whole world will regret it. While everyone is concentrating on Iraq i am ashamed at the lack of political pressure being applied by all nations. At the same time however, it is clear to me that the UN will fail like they did in North Korea. Get the ball rolling Israel and shame to any country who fails to support you.
Marg Bar Amrica and Marg bar Israeel, are slogans, and they don't mean in reality death to Israel or America. Let's get real here. While they chant rhetoric, Israel does it in real action. Each Israeli Administration has been preaching the destruction of Iran, and has been going on road shows across Europe to instigate sanctions on the Iranian people and push for military striks. Now this is what marg means, killing of the innocent Iranians and you mean it, just like you have done so in Palestine and in Lebanon. You think we are ignorant and are not reading the cluster bombs you have left behind in Lebanon, let alone the thousands of innocent who were killed and the 2 million Lebanese who were displaced from their homes. This doesn't include what Israel has been doing to the poor Palestinians. Actions speak louder than words. And Israel has done an excellent job when it comes to execution of its plans!!
The sanctions imposed on Iran were totally illegal. There was absolutely no legal reason to refer Iran's dossier to UNSC for violating what?? For demanding that it has a right under the NPT!! Where is Israel on this - with its nuclear war heads and violation of UN Resolution and not violation but 100's of UNSC violation. Guess the UN is controlled by the US and that is why Israel can get away with violating all international laws. If there was a real UN, then without a doubt the country who would be kicked out of UN would be Israel. But we know the UN and its arms are nothing but a puppet in the hands of the US and its ally Israel. No justice in this world and until then, Iran will not move to give you the pleasure of domination.
Alan, You are right in saying, "All radicals must be stopped at all cost!" That includes Jewish radicals!
If it would make any sense to 'dis-unite' nations, Israel would be one of the first.
Israel never signed the Non-proliferation treaty and so forego its benefits (including help with peaceful use of nuclear science). Iran signed it and received the benefits while cheating the world. Why? Who should be trusted? "Israel has nuclear plant for a while, never talked much about it, never threatened any country with it, never publicly called for the destruction of any country. In a nutshell, defensive policies. Iran is developping nuclear facilities, talks about it, publicly called for destruction of Israel and death to America numerous times, then declared they only want it to replace their abundant oil supplies. In a nutshell, nobody believes them and Iran is rightfully prevented to continue its program."
who makes no mention of it; but attempts to bomb another member state 'off the map' because rogue elements(who are not representative of that state and who are beyond its present sphere of control), who are operating within that state, have kidnapped two its soldiers?
In Iran they regularly chant "Maghr Baghr Umreeka, Maghr Baghr Eesraeel!" Do you even have a clue what they're saying? If you knew even basic Farsi you'd realize that these frenzied crowds are calling for "Death to America, Death to Israel!" while they burn these nations flags. Whether or not Ahmadinejad said "Sahneh roozgar" or "Safheh roozgar" indicating his desire for Israel to be "eliminated from the page of history (or these times), his aggressive pointed finger underscored his public statements of hate towards another member nation and he should in turn be publicly admonished for it. Just try going over there and saying, "Khoda barekat Umreeka, Khodah barekat Eesraeel!" and see what they do to you!
Good luck Lieberman. I dare say however that Iran will ignore any U.N. sanctions. Not like Israel which faithfully observes every one, give or take a hundred or so.
Lieberman, just to make headlines as he as well as others know there is no chance this will ever happen, especialy coming from him, he usualy has quite extreme opinions, He might be right but that's not suffcient in this cynical world. Also it a dangerous precedent as every year the Arabs call for the ouster of Israel, who whether justified or not do not in most cases abide by UN resolutions mainly regarding settlements, whic are by definition considered illegal by the UN. Henry Weil
Can you give us the "original translation"? And while we're at it,isn't this "Jewish controlled media" a favourite argument of the antisemites?
If any country deserves to be expulsed from the UN it is Israel and the US for so many war crimes, mass murder, crimes against humanity. That would also be the end of the UN. So would Iran's expulsion be, because it implies pariah states and international discrimination based on allegations without proof. Ahmadinejad is desperate, no doubt and quite rightfully so. The sanctions against peaceful nuclear work spell the end of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Other states contemplating developing nuclear energy will be weary to sign the NNPT if there is so much hassle from the US. All the while the US is freely engaging in nuclear weapons research, testing and developing and engaging in massive programs to develop bio-warfare in breach of UN treaties signed by the US. (See article in Scoop http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/HL0612/S00294.htm). There is no doubt that the US can no longer maintain its hegemony without preventing economic development of other nations.
It's high time someone pressed the UN Secretary General to seriously reprimand Iran for its blatant public statements of hate towards Israel, a fellow UN member nation. Annan was so pathetic in dealing with this issue that he may as well have been complicit with it. Hopefully Ki-moon has the vision and resolve to take forceful action and publicly chide Dr. Ahmadinejad (whose failed Ph.D. thesis in traffic and transport is exemplified in Tehran's daily terror commute), but this remains to be seen as he adjusts to his new position. Ahmadinejad's lacking education in history, religion, social customs, and plain common sense and decency should humble and silence him, not embolden and empower him to reveal his religious retardation.
He never said "wiped off the map". This was a "creative translation" (fabrication) by the Jewish owned media. Try to follow it back to the original source if you are interested in the truth. Or just keep repeating it if you are a Zionist.
The UN lost its legitimacy long ago. The unfortunate African victims of genocide will continue to suffer because the UN is too busy to deal with them. The UN's sole purpose is to manufacture anti-Israel declarations.
I dont think the UN will do anything but I think that the US should/will bluff forthcoming military action(speak strongly, hold the stick for now). Iranians don't want the civil war in Iraq to cross the border. Amedinejad and the nuclear program should be tossed out for Iran's own good.
When a member state of the UN calls to destroy, to wipe off the map, another member state, the UN must react in the arshest possible ways, including the revocation of membership !!!
If the Iranians leader's statements were serious, he would be pretty sad/mad. I suspect however that they are uttered solely to influence listeners and not necvessarily because he believes them. This Israeli knows that his communication to the UN will receive no attention outside Israel - the UN cannot expel a country the way he wants, Israel has itself ignored as many UN resolutions as anyone else (maybe with justification, but that's another matter), there are other nuclear countries in the Middle East and elsewhere in the world and no one talks of expelling them, etc. His communication, ostensibly written to the U.N., was clearly written solely to impress domestic Israeli opinion. It's just another example of the "ostensibly to a foreign leader but actually written for domestic purposes" communication that the Iranian too is probably engaged in. Embarassingly childish to everyone outside the intended audience. One blushes to read such stupidity.
Then the US would be a better place if the UN was gone. They have started enough scandals and are indeed one of the most corrupt and overblown institutions in the world.
I don't know. What I know is that it is against mental health.
Mr. M needs major psychological re-orientation. It would serve notice to Iranians if their membership were revoked that their leaders and policies were and are unacceptable to the world at large. But, from the results of recent elections I believe the Iranian Gov. is getting the hint of coming unrest in its populace.
None of nuclear or near-nuclear countries made any statements of wiping out another nuclear country. US and Russia do not have to worry. Even India and Pakistan can relax. They don't have even 1/100 of Ahmedinejad madness.
The barbarian "M" group states as its goal the rule of the world under Islam. This same group who would place the world under 7th century dogma, threatens to destroy Israel. We have here an re-enactment of 1938 europe with today's addition of religious madmen, who, due to their lack of self esteem (quite deserved) are ready to enslave all non-believers. Recall some lessons in history following the massive bombardment of Britain by rockets: hundreds of thousands of Axis citizens killed, Dresden, Hiroshima, Nagasaki. WMD attacks in America will be ASSSUMED to have come from the "M" group ... Mecca and Medina will be turned to glass.
if we start this we will have every single country out of UN, including USA and ISraeli itself. it is a matter of time. and then there will be no UN. i think he was drunk when he made tat call. lol
"Irans oil supply capability is dwindling each year" That could be said for all oil wells as there's no such thing as infinite reserves.
This guy has a much greater agenda along with his boss Khamenei. They are trying to make the Arabs sleep by the dream of liberating "Palestine". By using this pretext and oil money, he is gaining the support of some radical Sunni Arabs like the Hamas. His plan is much broader. It is to control from the Persian Gulf up to the Mediterranean. His Mullahs have taught him well about the Persian Empire and the expansion of the Shiite faith in the world. He is just a soldier following the orders of his Boss. Israel is the nightmare of the dreams of his peers. Like Armenia is the nightmare of the dream of the Turks. The Turks want to create a Turkish empire from the Mediterranean to Mongolia, but tiny Armenia is stopping their dream. Israel is the nightmare of both the Sunnis and Shiite who are always competing to control the Gulf and the Islamic world. All radicals must be stopped at all cost!
"A recent report in the UK guardian cited the Iranians inability to build a proper infrastructiure as a reason why their oil capacity is decreasing 10 percent every year. They are loosing billions of dollars. In 5 years time their oil revenue will be down by 50 percent. This third world country doesnt have the technology either to be able to repair its civilian planes without outside assistance or repair a pipeline". Problem Israel has is that it cant complain about Iran wanting to go nuke when Israel already have (without being a member of IAEA). I am afraid that Leiberman is merely drawing attention to the issue. Nearly as stupid as requesting entry into EU and NATO.
FOR ONE MEMBER OF THE UN TO CALL FOR THE DESTRUCTION OF ANOTHER MEMBER OF THE UN? PLEASE, SOMEONE ENLIGHTEN ME!
What an embarrassment he must be for Israel. If there is any member state that is a candidate for the revocation of its UN membership it is Israel, there is no UN member that has contravened more resolutions than it.
The last Persian to count his chickens before they were hatched was Xerxes I. 300 Spartans and the Athenian Navy cured him of that problem. In more modern times, Nikita Khrushchev predicted the Soviet Union would bury the West, too. So far, Nikita is buried along with the USSR, while the West is still here. JW New York City
Avigdor Lieberman shoots another own goal! Once Iran leaves the U N, the U N will lose its power to inspect or to organize sanctions. If the U N expels Iran its people may well unite in the face of such adversity, the last outcome we want. The U N must tighten sanctions gradually and hope the Iranians themselves will increasingly see that their president has changed the platform on which he was elected and they themselves will vote his party out of power.
If only Lieberman would realize with what disbelief and scorn all his utterances are received, especially overseas, maybe he would have second thoughts about all these declarations.
In fact, it makes perfect sense, and Iran is embarking on one of the most environmentally responsible poicies in the world. Maximise your oil profits by exporting, use the money to switch domestic energy consumption to nuclear, contribute less to global warming. It's a pity Bush is in the pocket of the American oil companies and is still pretending that global warming does not exist.
"Why would one of the most energy rich countries in the world want nuclear energy? To spend all this money to develop nuclear energy when you have so much oil for energy doesnt make sense to me." AE, what you wrote is not entirely true. Iran's oil industry is in a state of serious decline, almost close to collapse. Crude production is declining at the rate of 12% per year and may enter its terminal state as early as 2015. In this case the Iranians may not be lying to say that they will need nuclear power for electricity generation. The western boycott of technology for the Iranian petrochemical complex is having a serious effect on that industry's long-term viability and only the Chinese have the potential for partially bailing them out.
You are right LOTS of bases in the ME- HOWEVER, there are almost as many "secret" bases in countries not listed. Having many bases/supplies pre positioned, allows the U.S. to respond very quickly when needed.
Dear President Ahmadinejad: Your are forgetting that pride goes before the fall. You have arrived in the land of the buffoon due to your zeal and not knowledge. Your boasting is a confession of your heart full of evil--bent on harming God's people. QUICK--take a shortcut--change gods: repent and serve the only true God--the God of Israel!
Talk about obvious body language. If the US is so weak and Iran is so great then they have nothing to fear, right? So why the bravado? Iran sounds nervous if not scared and seems to know that their future may very well include some bunker busting bombs falling on their pride and joy. The UN's vote means only more isolation for the mullah regime. If they could, they would prove their 'manhood' by blowing up something owned by the Great Satan. But they know that would simply help seal their fate so better just shout threats. And obviously that 8 year war in which they weren't able to defeat Saddam still hurts. According to Iran, if the forces they believe were behind Saddam took on Iran directly and as Iran weren't even able to defeat Saddam, I wonder what kind of 'slap in the face' they think they could administer. What punks.
Jimmy Carter did.
Being a Christian supporter of Israel, Israel will survive until Messiah's coming and it will be the New Jerusalem as well as all those who believe in Messiah---the Tanakh and the Renewed Covenant do not lie!
Its the time now for americans to recognize that IRAK was the wrong target.
This speech is to drum up support in Shiite Arabia.Standing up to America and Israel pays quick dividends much more in speeches than reality. The strategy it to wind up the arabs to support Ahmandinejads ideas.Who knows maybe if he shouts long enough his own constituents will join in.
"It is of course Israel which is banging the war drums in spite of Ahmadinejad`s numerous peaceful declarations." I'm not sure what 'peaceful declarations' you are reffering to. Oh wait, it must be the ones where he calls for the destruction of Israel, yeah that's it. Poor Mr. Ahmadinejad, all he wants is to peacefully coexist, but the dang world won't let him. P.S. I laugh at all your posts because they are just so ridiculous. I wish people would stop giving you the satisfaction of getting angry with someone who obviosuly cannot hold an impartial conversation.
A recent report in the UK guardian cited the Iranians inability to build a proper infrastructiure as a reason why their oil capacity is decreasing 10 percent every year. They are loosing billions of dollars. In 5 years time their oil revenue will be down by 50 percent. This third world country doesnt have the technology either to be able to repair its civilian planes without outside assistance or repair a pipeline. Poor twats..dumb as hell and even when sitting on a tonne of oil unemployment is at 40 percent, inflation at 20 percent and poverty everywhere. Iran compared to the west you are a looser. You are a third world cesspit. Keep up the bragging Ahamdinajad..its hilarious. Remember that bloody nose that the american electorate gave bush that you were bragging about. Well your people gave you the same bloody nose. In every type of measureable achievement relevant to progress Iran are ranked BOTTOM. What a hole..keep up the bragging...
FOR those that think President Carter is so smart in his new book dont forget. Carter was president at the time hostages taken in Iran. He did nothing to get them back. He made us look weak and stupid. He would have given Texas away if Iran asked for it.
I CAN SEE THAT GOD IS ALWAYS ON THE SIDE OF THE JEWS. ONE BY ONE DICTATORS FALL. SADDAM HUSSEIN HAS GONE AND OTHERS WILL FOLLOW. GOD WILL ALWAYS BE WITH THE JEWS
Iran will have nukes...no amount of bombing can stop that...only an invasion can...and that will never happen...can't really...Iran and Iraq will forge a unity that will shake the entire region.
The Babylonian Talmud was written in iran during the First hostage situation (the entire jewish people) as part of a survival kit .. before that time no government in israel or judah had ever possessed nuclear bombs ..
Israel has nuclear plant for a while, never talked much about it, never threatened any country with it, never publicly called for the destruction of any country. In a nutshell, defensive policies. Iran is developping nuclear facilities, talks about it, publicly called for destruction of Israel and death to America numerous times, then declared they only want it to replace their abundant oil supplies. In a nutshell, nobody believes them and Iran is rightfully prevented to continue its program.
Why would one of the most energy rich countries in the world want nuclear energy? To spend all this money to develop nuclear energy when you have so much oil for energy doesnt make sense to me. Am I the only person who sees this? As Bob Marley said "in the abundance of water the fool is thirsty"
The Usual Suspects. Glad they're spinning their wheels here than up to no good somewhere else.
that he is indeed the man in the photo at the Iranian seizure of the American hostages at the Embassy in Iran? Everything he has done so far has led me to believe that he is almost screaming this at the top of his lungs but no one is listening.
See the long list at http://www.satellite-provider.pl/middle-east-us-army.html Most Americans will be surprized, as I was, to learn that the US holds this many bases just in the ME!
That is the proof that the U.S invaded the wrong country. Saddam was no threat to the U.S and got nothing to do with 9/11, Iran is the biggest threat for the U.S and the whole region. Too bad we spread our troops too thin. Iran will walk out of all this mess as a NUKE country.
Down with the military industrial complex. No doubt, becuase of your great support of this cause, you will want to lead the way. Therefor, 5 squadrons of aircraft will bomb Sussex today, removing all of its industry and military permanently. Sounds great to me.
... double standards is a way of implicitely recognizing the superiority of the US. Therefor what Israel has is irrelevant. Since the US has nuclear weapons, and is the only country that has used them already, it is funny they think it is up to them to decide who has the right to have that kind of weapons, and who does not. We need to stay a little logic. What the problem of the Iranians is, is that they are very proud people, and they have every right to be so. We should respect that. The question I had was: Why do the muslims see Israel as an 'alien' entity in their world? It took me some effort to find out what went wrong, but I understand it now. Uri Avnery from Gush Shalom understands it too. There is a way to make things right and everybody happy as well. Therefore better structures are needed, and a special statute for Israel-Palestine in the EU could be part of the solution.
the past by taking indefense diplomatic personnel hostage for more than a year!! They have done everything to show the West that the 3000 centrifuges are for producing raw materials only for "peaceful" nuclear applications. Maybe, if somebody else, not Ahmadinaj, would have dealt with some basic diplomatic cunning with the West, they may have succeded. The Iranian people deserve a better Govnmt. but, as it also happens with us, we got what we deserved, apparently, and we are paying for it as will the Iranians.
That poor Amedinejad must be so bored. It seems he has nothing better to do than seek exposure in the Western media. The lucky Iranians must be so happy that everything is so perfect in Iran that their president has time for daily threaten-the-west press conferences.
"Do not ask for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee."
"Why can`t Khamenei put Ahmadinejad across his knee and give the boy the good spanking he so badly needs?" The bigger question is why doesn't the Bush puppy get a spanking, and a kick in the behind, from that old lady with the silly looking hat?
Why are you so obsessed with the Talmud? You are supposed to be an objective international journalist (your own claims). I asked you many times but you never respond - what exactly do you mean by "Talmudic Israel?" and why would that be any different from "Islamic Iran / Saudi Arabia / Gaza / etc? Is the word "Talmudic" supposed to be derogatory?
Why can't Khamenei put Ahmadinejad across his knee and give the boy the good spanking he so badly needs?
"His speech made no reference to series of bombings that have occurred in Ahvaz, believed to stem from tension between the city's Arabic-speaking community and the Farsi-speaking authorities." (Subject line from Maimonides, Responsa)
"Ahmadinejad said Iran had done everything it could to prove that its nuclear program is peaceful but the West". It is of course Israel which is banging the war drums in spite of Ahmadinejad's numerous peaceful declarations. And lackey Bush following meekly behind. Let`s hear it for the industrial-military complex.
As any second rate Dictator, Iran "President" M. Ahmadinejad, uses well proven method to claim the ennemy at the gate, to master the local opinion, and try to overlook their instataneous and existential requirements. Sure, he may blame all the Western World for the hardship the Iranian people are encountering daily, but they know better as the Iranian Blogs attest to that. Their is too much frustration with Ahmadinejad's leadership, and the suspicion that the man is basicalyy a "tuut", as he is called. Unfortunately, it is the false promesses and the inability of the citizens to rise up and demand for accountability from the Mullah. that is the essence of his continued rule of anotherwise very sophisticated Iranian population.
He should have reminded the west of hypocrisy and moral duplicity by allowing Talmudic Israel to possess hundreds of nuclear bombs to attack Musilms, while disallowing Iran from developing a peaceful nuclear program.
