Lebanon warns UN: Israel planning to attack us
UN envoy condemns IDF artillery attack and cites repeated Israeli threats, says Lebanese paper Al-Hayyat.
By Jack Khoury Tags: UN Lebanon Israel news IDFLebanon's ambassador to the United Nations has warned that Israel is exhibiting signs of an imminent attack on his country, the Lebanese newspaper Al-Hayyat reported on Friday.
Ambassador Noaf Salaam sent missives to the United Nations secretary general and to the Security Council condemning Israel's recent artillery fire on the village of Houla, the site where a Katyusha rocket was fired at the Upper Galilee last week.
Salaam called the artillery fire a clear violation of Lebanon's sovereignty as well as of UN Resolution 1701, which saw a truce between Israel and Lebanon following the 2006 war.
According to Al-Hayyat, Salaam described in his missive repeated Israeli threats against the Lebanese government and citizens, an expression he believes signals Israeli plans for to attack.
Salaam also said that the Israeli decision to bomb Lebanese territory following every Katyusha attack delayed and prevented Lebanese forces from investigating the rocket attacks.
Lebanese troops found and dismantled four rockets ready for launching near the border with Israel last Wednesday, a day after the Katyusha was launched from the southern village.
The Katyusha fire was the first such incident since last month, and the ninth since the Second Lebanon War.
The attack drew a rapid response from Israeli artillery in a brief flare-up across the border. Neither the rocket nor the artillery caused casualties.

where CJ lives, he still wouldn't understand it It seems CJ has a problem when facts are presented, as my experience with him has proven time and again One thing I will say, he's as stubborn as a mule, with the same ability to understand
A soverign state is responsible for its territory, and attacks emanating from its territory. What would Australia say if Al-Qaida were to launch rockets on it from Indonesia? Don't get cute with Lebanon-the-state and the-terrorists-that-Lebanon-the-state-tolerates-but-is-not-responsible-for. That-means-that-Lebanon-is-not-a-state. Can't have it both ways.

Once Israel knows where the Hezbollah missile caches are it should be Hezbollah's last hurrah ! Shabat Shalom from America's Heartland !
Lebanon is not really worth getting into a quagmire over. Just keep hitting them with strong IAF strikes. Locate the Hezbollah missile caches and destroy them immediately. Otherwise, you wait for the enemy to dictate where he can strike and when. When Hezbollah strikes with those missiles, Israel will pay heavy price in economic damage .
The s-300 system is fine but no match for modern air forces like the Israel's and the West . The much-vaunted requires even more intelligence and countermeasures if you need to defeat it. It won't be easy. The US has a few S-300's on hand, so I would expect any countermeasures to also be in Israel's capability.
Reminds me of a little bully who grabs a rock and hits the lion in the cage without realizing the door is unlocked and wide open. When he see's the lion slowly walk out of his cage, he runs over to mama for protection. Which we all know at that point, momma can't save him.
"Israel can not allow Hezbollah to get much stronger" - bloodyscot Then why has Israel spent the last 5 years destroying any moderate Palestinian and doing everything it could to help Hamas grow stronger? Clearly you must have missed the actions of the last three Israeli governments.
...let Lebanese security forces hand in hand with UNIFIL properly investigate these matters and STOP trying to foment another war in the north! Does Israel not have enough problems?
"Does Israel remember how they LOST the 2006 war?" No. That memory has been erased by the great victory over the civilians of Gaza.
IDF worried they Lebanon may soon obtain the S-300 defence system, that would limit or stop Israel from using airpower over Lebanon. Israel has a choice to weaken Hezbollah now or wait until they are too strong to quickly defeat and a long war would be hard for Israel.
No, Israel has never lost to Lebanon - or any or all of the surrounding Arab/Muslim nations. Israel agreed to stop fighting on the basis of UN promises to police the area and assure that all PLO and Hezbollah fighters and arms would be removed from Lebanon. The UN has not followed through on those promises and the elements that were supposed to be removed have continued to commit acts of war against Israel. Seems the rules do not apply to anyone but Israel, which is supposed to just sit still and take it! Seems like racial/ethnic prejudice to me!
Katyushas are fired from Lebanon into Israel. How is it Israel gunning for war?
tell me , what constitutes victory against a terrorist enemy fighting often without uniform and surrounding themselves with supposed civilians? What constitutes victory in a non-conventional war? This is a question many people smarter than you or i deal with and have dealt with in recent years and has no easy answer, certainly not as easy as your post would imply. Oh, and I do remember certain goals laid out I have seen the military statistics and outcome data , perhaps you have not. I dont see any more katushas and have not, or for that matter any kidnappings. And while no one is under any illusion the international force is actually doing its job, it is there (another israeli condition for the end of hostilities). Furthermore, israel is rightly concerned with the continued build up of hez weapons, which when combined with an ideology of hatred and a desire to destroy israel justifies much surveillance. Political blundering aside, how do you honestly define a win and a loss?
Talk about projection
Obviously not, because they want to get knocked out in again in round 2.
... and will gin up an excuse to start a war, any war, that will let the IDF rumble North and steal the Litani's water and divert it to Israel. All those Israeli swimming pools and green lawns need massive amounts of water and you've already stole all the water you can--for now--from Syria and Jordan and Gaza. Do your buddies at CNN and FOX already have the IDF 'talking points' that will be used to sell another bloody Israeli rampage?
We defeated you three times and we will defeat you again. Send your zionist cancer to the South of Lebanon again and we will send them back in body bags just like we always have. HN
Proportionality is great in the kitchen, but when your neighbor starts throwing bombs over the fence, an equal response is way too little. A much stronger and violent response is necessary to curb future aggression. Or maybe the IDF should instigate first next time around, and see what happens.
And they are playing a game for Hezbo wants to survive at all counts - even if it costs Lebanon it's Constitution and goverement. Right now they are warting peace in the goverement over vetoes they want. This is a scare tactic that they are using to justify themselves and their arms.
why do you restrict yourself to "Israel firing Katuyshas in order to have a pretext for attak"? It could have been Americans ,wanting to have pretext to supply Lebanon with more weapons ,couln't it?
The Lebanese must have a guilty conscience about some evil they are doing or not doing for them to be this paranoid.
I used to think Jews had Chutzpah until I moved to the middle east. Now I see that this is an Arab invention.
do the 60,000,00 rockets hezbollah owns include hummus and taboulah heads? if you add fould mudammas to hummus, and falafels, you may end up having more explosive effects.
Lebanon and Israel are in a State of War--since 1948! Lebanon has Hezbollah ministers in its cabinet. Lebanon's government allows a non-state actor to hold tens of thousands of missiles in its own hands,. Remember Pancho Villa and the US in 1916?? Lebanon whines when Israel responds to attacks from Israel? Screw 'em!
If the UN had implemented resolution 1701, i.e., disarmament of Hizbollah, there would be no need for an Israeli strike.
stephen, please tell me how did you come up with the 60 thousand rockets hizbo owns? when did they allow you to count them?what kind are they?
the state of Lebanon & non-state militants? "Israel will attack if Lebanon keeps firing rockets at Israel. " Is it Lebanon the state or non-state militants? "Israel will of course, be condemned by the UN and International community leading to another "Goldstone" fiasco" If the state of Israel attacks the state of Lebanon, for something the state of Lebanon is trying to stop non state militants from doing, yes, and rightly so. Don't the teach thinking where you come from?
This has been their strategy since Obama`s appealed to them for a show of good faith towards Israel. Even the Jordanians have participated in this scheme. Shame on them all for what they bring to their own people as well as ours.
DT, in TA, seems to be living in a diffwerent world. Lebanon does not have rockets to fire. Here are the possible suspects: 1. Israel' Army, to give itself an excuse to attack Lebanon 2. Lawless Palestenian Groups who are not under the contorl of the PA 3. Hizbollah, although I am not a fan of, and think that the group is just another lawless militia, they are not at this time in a position to do so, fearing the potential response from Israel. Also,Tehran would not give orders at this time. The thug regime is busy now. 4. Individuals. (just look at the home made launch pads)
from the Arab world? What kind of leadership do these folks have anyway? They seem to be bloodthirsty for lack of a better description.
attack on Israel. Hezbollah has about 60.000 missiles. Israel on the other hand has just a few. Of course it requires only that few. Something, really sounds fishy. I doubt whether has to do with Hummus. More like some strategy from the "fiddlers" in Tehran. Good day and Shabat Shalom from snowy Alps.
attack. Why would Israel want to attack the Lebanon if the border is kept quiet?A couple of katyushas is no reason to start a war. If the lebanon keeps her side of 1701 so will Israel.
Incomprehensible, but expected.
Israel will attack if Lebanon keeps firing rockets at Israel. Israel will of course, be condemned by the UN and International community leading to another "Goldstone" fiasco.
incriminating Israel and report on the numerous war crimes and crimes against humanities committed by Israel. There is no need for Goldstone to investigate the Katyusha attack which was obviously carried out by freedom fighters. This is a mad mad mad... and dysfunctional world
