Lebanon calls on Syria to reduce arms smuggling across border

Israel repeatedly accused Iran, Syria of supplying Hezbollah with weapons across Syria-Lebanon border.

Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora urged Syria on Thursday to step up its efforts to prevent arms smuggling into Lebanon, echoing a request made by the United Nations in June after it investigated security along the two countries' shared border.

The UN resolution that ended last summer's Second Lebanon War between Israel and Hezbollah banned weapon transfers to the Iranian- and Syrian-backed militant group, but the Lebanese and Israeli governments have criticized alleged violations by Syria.

"We've always expressed the necessity for serious border control and suitable efforts by our brothers in Syria to control these borders," said Seniora, following a meeting with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Cairo. "The continuation of the [current] situation is subjecting Lebanon to the illegal smuggling of more goods, weapons and individuals."

The U.S. and Israel have repeatedly accused Iran and Syria of supplying Hezbollah with advanced weapons across Syria's border with Lebanon - allegations that Damascus has rejected.

Hezbollah's militias fired nearly 4,000 rockets at northern Israel during the 34-day conflict that began in July 2006, killing 40 Israeli civilians. More than 1,000 Lebanese - mostly civilians - and over 100 Israeli soldiers also died in the fighting.

In late May, the UN Security Council appointed an independent mission to assess monitoring along the Syrian-Lebanese border. Following the investigation, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged Syria and Iran to do more to prevent arms smuggling to Lebanon, citing disturbing reports from the Lebanese and Israeli government of alleged violations of the UN arms embargo.

Seniora repeated a similar call for action Thursday, saying, we hope that serious steps take place soon.

Saniora, Like all leaders, must appease different groups of people to remain in power. The fact that he is still in power, even after half his country was destroyed, shows he can endure. Israel and the US still support him even while his Country was at War with Israel. Syria and Iran support him because he lets them run over his country. Every one says he is another country's Puppet. He is "The Puppet Master"

This whole cycle will be repeated, repeated, repeated until we supply Iran with a new distraction: namely, that of building an actual civilisation after we vaporise all of the current crooks' infrastructure. Let it begin soon.

The question is: why an entity like Hizbullah, even political, possesses crews and continues to receive those from Syria or Iran ignoring the UN resolutions? Hezbollah militia is illegal and it is a serious threath to peace and stability on all over the middle-east area, also because it serves the interests of foreign powers to which it does not import independence and the sovereignty of Lebanon. Mr Siniora is trying to re-establish the state of right and the democracy in Lebanon, remembering the times in which various political, ethnic and religious communities lived from each other in peace. It is necessary that all the international community encourages him with more force and aids him, with the collaboration of the UNIFIL, to seize all the crews and dismantle the military structure of non-governative organizations, the true threat for Lebanon. It isn't easy but possible. Give Lebanon peace.

MEMRI has a site called the "Syria Project". Articles listed by date, concerning Syria and its involvement in Lebanon, war with Israel, etc; most interesting.

You should read the articles in the "Syria Project" portion of MEMRI. There are some particularly interesting articles regarding Ali Husseini, Shiite scholar and Mufti, who blames Syria, Iran and Hezbollah for their crimes against the interests of Lebanon. Also an article written in June of 2006 about Syria and Iran using Hezbollah to pull Israel into a war.

Shiite scholar in Lebanon and Mufti for Lebanese Shiites has slammed Iran, Syria and Hezbollah for their role in destabilizing the country. Syria and Iran want to provoke war between Lebanon and Israel. Husseini states the three do not have the best interests of Lebanon in mind.

Six years ago, Lebanon was under Syrian occupation, an occupation backed by the US, the west, Europe and even the UN. This is the biggest fault that would destroy Lebanon and Israel all together (don't forget about the Irani threat and how it will span over Syria, passing by lebanon towards Israel because of this occupation all west INCLUDING Israel agreed upon )

Israel should have caught the opportunity of steps towards peace with the presence of Saniora. What he did by paralizing and killing all insurgents in the "fath el islam" terrorist organisation (inspired by Al Qaida) thanks to the Lebanese army (with minimum arms, since it is interdicted for the Lebanese army to have powerful munitions and armors) has united many lebanese who used to mistrust the army. By backing Saniora, you back the army and the Lebanese won't feel the necessity of a resistance movement such as Hizbullah. (since on both cases, Israel is replying against the Lebanese as a whole not against Hizbullah itself). Let's be clear about all issues and start thinking opening, tolerance. There's never a rage of black, white spots exist among every human. embrace it or try.

This "new" style is amusing. USA accuses Syria for letting insurgents to come to Iraq. Lebanon accuses Syria for weapon smuggling. Don't countries any more have own border control? If Lebanon doesn't want weapon smuggling, why not put polices and soldiers on border and shut the border crossings. Same with Iraq Syria border. Does USA accuse in the same way Mexico for the illegal "settlers" coming to USA? If a country doesn't want something to come in, it is its responsibility to close the border. Or at least it used to be.

Actually, Siniora has shown himself to be quite resilient. The fact that he was upset about the Hezbollah misedventure, only shows that he is human. In my book, that is a quality. Thus far, you have shown yourself to be chronically wrong about most issues.

Israel has demonstrated that, in this region, might makes right. If you have the power and determination to do something, who is going to stop you? During the recent war in Lebanon, Siniora appeared on television, weeping and whining for Israel to stop the bombing of Beruit. Israel ignored him. Now here he is again, whining about Syria and Hizbollah. My guess is that they will also ignore him. Siniora has shown himself to be weak, cautious, and ineffective. These are fatal flaws in a leader, but they are excellent characteristics in a puppet.

If we had it Israel's way, no Arab State or organization in the region would carry any guns bigger than the ones that Israel approves for the PLA police (ie AK 47, etc..). Love it or hate it, Hezbollah give Israel a taste of reality; it is (ie Hezbollah) the necessary evil.
