Last woman Palestinian prisoner freed in Shalit video swap
Haniyeh: Movement in prisoner swap file a 'serious relief'; Report: Israel knows exactly where Shalit is held.
By Jack Khoury Tags: Gilad Shalit Hamas Israel news GazaIsrael freed a Palestinian woman prisoner to the Gaza Strip on Sunday, the last of 20 it has swapped for a videotape that provided the first visible evidence that abducted Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit is still alive.
Rawda Habib was taken to the coastal territory in a Red Cross vehicle, then driven to the offices of Gaza's Hamas Islamist leader Ismail Haniyeh.
Haniyeh said the prisoner releases suggested there was progress toward a deal to free Shalit, who has been in Palestinian captivity since a 2006 cross-border raid from Gaza.
"We view with relief the serious movement in the prisoner swap file," Haniyeh said. "We stress that we will not abandon our responsibility towards our male and female prisoners."
The German- and Egyptian-mediated swap had stirred expectations that a deal could soon be reached to release Shalit in exchange for a wider Israeli prisoner amnesty, but officials on both sides said there was still some hard bargaining ahead.
Saed was arrested in 2007 while crossing the Gaza-Israel border. She had cited medical reasons for wanting to enter Israel, which accused her of plotting a suicide bombing.
Israel freed 19 other Palestinian inmates on Friday then received the two-minute tape of Shalit, who looked healthy and sounded coherent. In a proof-of-life gesture by Hamas, he held up a copy of an Arabic-language newspaper dated Sept. 14.
For Shalit's release, Hamas has demanded that Israel free hundreds of Palestinians from its prisons, including many jailed for involvement in suicide bombings and lethal shootings. All told, more than 10,000 Palestinians are incarcerated in Israel.
Report: Dispute over Israeli Arab prisoners stalling Shalit deal
The London-based pan Arab daily Asharq al-Awsat reported on Sunday that a dispute over the release of Israeli Arab and East Jerusalem prisoners as delaying the conclusion of a prisoner exchange between Israel and Hamas aimed at securing Shalit's release.
According to the report, Hamas is insisting that Israel release most of the prisoners from East Jerusalem as well as those who are Israeli citizens, since the vast majority of them have been jailed for a long time, and some of them even belong to Hamas.
However, Israel has refused to release these prisoners, saying that releasing Israeli citizens would create a dangerous precedent.
The newspaper further reported that the German mediator accompanying the swap talks has suggested replacing these prisoners with Arab prisoners, but Hamas rejected the proposal.
However, the report continued, Israel has agreed to release all the prisoners on Hamas' list who are from Gaza and the West Bank, among them Hamas military commanders. Hamas, for its part, has agreed to deport some of these prisoners to Arab nations and to Europe.
'Israel knows exactly where Shalit is held'
In a separate story, Asharq al-Awsat quoted a senior Israeli defense official as saying that Israel knows exactly where Shalit is being held captive, and that the location is under constant Israeli surveillance.
According to the report, the official said that if Israel so desired it could take the risk and storm the place, but the fear that Shalit might get hurt is preventing Israel from launching such an operation.
Hamas is aware of the fact that Israel knows where Shalit is held, the paper reported, and has consequently surrounded the location with explosives. Hamas has also issued a directive to kill Shalit if an Israeli attack is sensed, the paper said.
The paper said these remarks were made during an informal discussion surrounding the prisoner exchange talks.
Asharq al-Awsat further reported that one of the individuals present in the discussion said "Since we knew exactly where the secret Iranian nuclear reactor was before any Western intelligence body, and we knew about the Syrian reactor, is it logical that we wouldn't know where Shalit is?"
"We know where he is, but don't want to repeat the scenario of the evacuation of the soldier Nachshon Wachsman," he said. Wachsman was kidnapped by Hamas in 1994, and was killed during an Israeli attempt to rescue him.
On Friday, senior Hamas official Mahmoud al-Zahar said that Shalit will be set free within weeks or two months at most, suggesting that the Islamic group might show greater flexibility in upcoming negotiations.
Israeli officials said Friday's completion of a swap of 20 female Palestinian prisoners for a recent videotape of Shalit was the first stage in a bigger effort by Israel, Hamas and German mediators.
In an interview with German weekly Der Spiegel Zahar said his organization seeks to wrap up negotiations as soon as possible.

I guess it?s politically incorrect to say that yes, a rescue attempt should be launched, even if this could lead to injury or death for him or his rescuers. The abortive attempt at evacuating Nachshon Wachsman was the correct approach, even though the attempt failed and led to his death.
take no prisoners!
I was in the IDF and I'm speaking from what I would want. I would not want anybody with blood on their hands and fanatic views to be released into circulation on my behalf. If their is guarantee for peace it is one thing, but the idea of releasing some of the people on the list only justifies the act of kidnapping. Shalit is not a POW. He is not being treated humanly, and has no visitation rights (even by a third party). I see how Hamas treats their own, what do you think they are doing to Shalit. Don't even try to compare him to the prisoners in Israel, who had trials, sentences, and many have blood on their hands...Shalit has committed no crime and was abducted from Israel. Hope you don't mistake me for a fanatic...peace is all I want too but kidnapping is not the way to obtain it and peace is not what Hamas (and a few other groups) are aiming for.
"If he is killed then it is honourable and there is closure." Yeah, you can be the one to explain that to Shalit's Mom and Dad. If he were your son, would you say that? Maybe you would. There will only be peace when Israeli's love their children more than they love the occupation.
I agree with you in theory, all prisoners should be released when peace is achieved, but I am curious to know, what is your thoughts on Jewish terrorists who kill Palestinians and rarely face or spend long amounts of time in Israelis jail. Isn't there a double standard here, and what about all the innocent Palestinians who wee killed by the IDF or IAF bombs?
If they know where he is held, they should risk it. If Shalit is killed, it is honorable and there is closure. Negotiating and releasing prisoners sets precedent and Hamas will kidnap again. So long as he is held captive, the entire country is held captive. Send a message to Hamas!
I call on all, to pray for just but awful curses, sickness and torment on Gilad's captors and their families. May Gilad become a great and burdensome liability 24/7 to these barbaric captors, that they let him go free...just as the Egyptians in Moses's days were cursed by G_d, and let the Israelites go free, may the same happen with Gilad's captors.
Mike, first you told us a couple of days ago that the Hamas government was only elected for Gaza or something to that extent. Apparently you were not aware of it that the Hamas movement won national parliamentary elections (for the Palestinian Legislative Council) in 2006 and thus had the right to form the national government, which it duly did. Now you tell us and I quote: "Which European state would be stupid enough to give refuge to released Hamas terrorists? Oh Sweden perhaps? I know my country has let themse animals in before, only to have them turn on us." Please, tell us which Hamas members, given asylum in the UK, turned against the UK? Where and when? I know your allegations are lies. There was a group of Hamas mebers exiled in the early 1990s to South Lebanon for one year, but the UK never gave asylum to Hamas members, let alone that these people turned against the UK. Don't embarass yourself, Mike B., by being both economical with the truth and ignorant.
I always believed that the Israelis knew where Shalit was being held. If that was the case than there was no excuse for not trying to free him and having having him imprisoned all this time. I understand that until now they did not even know if he was alive. I remember earlier Israeli action like the Entebe raid. The new Israelis do not measure up to the founders of the state.
If Israel really knows the location of Shalit, it would have attempted his rescue during it war on Gaza. If he was killed during such a rescue operation then, no one would blame the army. Israel's claim to know about the Syrian or Iranian nuclear reactors does not necessarily imply that it knows the location of Shalit. Furtheremore, had Israel known about the second reactor it would have screamed and shouted about it long time ago.
We have may exemples, Jewish terrorist who killed their Arab zitizens. so the law is not the same for everyone.
1- If israel knows everything...where is ron arad? 2- If israel's policy is to prevent hostages by all means (aka...kill the kidnappers and the soldiers together on the scene) then why not storm the place...if something happens to shalit it is in par with the army's new policy.
I do tot see the point of exchanging Shalit for even a single terrorist, if that terrorist goes on to kill Israelis.
Which European state would be stupid enough to give refuge to released Hamas terrorists? Oh, Sweden perhaps? I know my own country has let these animals in before, only to have them turn on us.
Very few Israelis would be complaining if we released and deported them and strip them of their Israeli citizenship. I hear Hamastan is very nice this time of year.
Yes, it would be nice (and just) if the same law applied to all citizens. But I have heard that for one body of citizens the law says that anyone claiming to be related to them can immigrate, and for another that they are not allowed to, even if they were living there till 1948. Not to mention other aspects like education funding etc etc
Israeli Arabs should be subject to Israeli law unless they do not wish to be Israeli and prefer Palestinian I.D.s. Which if is the case Israel will gladly give such opportunity. If Israeli Arabs are not subject to the same laws then they are no longer Israeli.
In mideast bargaining, the actual purchase is less important than seeming to prevail in the process. The Yiddishe Ashkenazi kopf doesn't understand this, and so the deal was fixed from the beginning, and the Israels listened to their heart only and not their mind or their future. Every life is priceless, but equating one Israeli for hundreds of terrorists who will kill Israelis again is immoral, bad business, and plain dumb. The reputation for Jews as sharp business men evaoprates in this case. Turn off the water and electric permanently until Gilad is freed unharmed. Even the Hamasheads will get the message when they can't watch the anti semitic cartoons on the telly.
If the unnamed official spoke with the Prime Minister's authority, you think it is a form of spin. If he spoke on his own authority, he should be sacked. If they know, that we know, that they know, that we know, etc. we are in the usual hall of mirrors. I like the suggestion we lower the power and water pressure to Gaza intermintently but every couple of minutes: flick the lights of the Gazans to know that harassment is a two way street. Give em half power, so the t.v. goes grey, the fridges struggle, the propaganda on the radio turns into static, and the water dribbles out of the faucet like with grandpa. That's nothing compared to the pain they have inflicted on the Shallit family and Israel in general.. maybe that will work. Don't exchange masses of prisoners tho. That will only end in more Israeli suffering.
