Knesset expedites bill to allow smoking in 20% of bars, cafés
The bill will permit smoking in public places were the local authority has allowed an exemption to the no smoking law that came into effect recently.
The Knesset House Committee decided Wednesday to expedite the legislation of a bill that requires local authorities to allow smoking in a fifth of the public bars and coffee houses.
This allows National Union MK Zvi Hendel, who proposed the bill, to begin the legislation proceedings next week and not have to wait 45 days before the preliminary hearing.
The bill would permit smoking in public places where the local authority has allowed an exemption to the no smoking law.
While the original smoking law passed was not effective due to a lack of enforcement, ever since fines on smoking in public places increased to between 1,000 and 5,000 shekels from 310 to 630 shekels last month the law has been observed much more.
