Jordanian prosecutor reveals plot to assassinate Bush during last Jordan visit
Three Jordanians charged with plotting to carry out terrorist attacks and the illegal possession of explosives.
By The Associated PressA Jordanian prosecutor on Wednesday revealed a previously undisclosed plot by three alleged militants to assassinate U.S. President George W. Bush during his last visit to the kingdom.
The military prosecutor charged the three Jordanians, Nidhal Musleh al-Momani, Sattam al-Zawahrah and Tharwat Daraj, with plotting to carry out terrorist attacks and the illegal possession of explosives. The three also were planning to attack the American and Danish embassies in Amman, the prosecutor alleged during the opening day of the trial.
The Jordanian authorities arrested the three men on November 28, one day before Bush's arrival in Amman for talks with King Abdullah II and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. The prosecutor told the court the defendants were found with homemade bombs made by filling large plastic bottles with gasoline.
According to the prosecution's case, the three men are friends who met in the northeastern city of Zarqa in October to plan their attacks. He described them as adherents of the Takfiri ideology, an extremist doctrine that regards even non-militant Muslims as infidels.
The prosecutor provided no additional details about the case and it was not immediately clear how far along or how sophisticated the alleged plot was.
Military courts in Jordan prohibit news organizations from releasing the names of prosecutors for security reasons.
The defendants did not plea to the charges on Wednesday but were assigned a lawyer, Abdul Jabar Abu-Gollah. He could not be reached for more details. If convicted the three men could face the death penalty.
The hearing was adjourned until March 14.

but, he IS the President of the greatest nation on earth. I don't blame Jordanians, just the jackasses who thought about doing such a despicable act.
To milk USA? Are you sure? Have you seen reportage on huge number of people who cannot pay even emergence care in USA? Show me things or numbers Jordan got and did not pay in some way. I think they really tried harm G.W. Bush in anger and without thinking they would make him Saint and all those who stand in line to sue him after he leaves White House would stay without satisfaction- moral and material.
The article says is an extremist doctrine that regards even non-militant Muslims as infidels. Ah, Islam is such a rich and diverse faith. From wahabbi 'don't even shake the hand of an infidel' to invisible immans who will appear after a nuclear bomb attack. Cutting off limbs and heads or just blowing up people where you can find them. Iraq-Algeria-Britian-US-Spain-Israel-Sudan-Kenya-Somilia, etc.. Such diversity.
Every time Jordan wants to get cash from America, We hear a story about the security forces capturing some extremist who tried to harm Americans. As they say in Jordan, this is an Indian movie(not beleivable). Jordan should fight terrorisim by implementing democracy and free speech. Jordan is a police state where people can not speak freely. Jordanians from Palestinian origin are treated as second class citizens. Jordan did not allow the palestinians who are running for thier lives from Iraq to enter the border. King Abdullah is not king Hussain. I miss king Hussain. He was a gentelman and compasionate person. I can not say the same about the current king.
How stupid to even think of doing such a despicable act. I think the Bush adminsistration with all its faults is finally finding ways to understand the good it will get from a lasting peace. Jordan is to be commended for their great work.
