Jordan: World must stop Israel settlement building

Abdullah II warns Israel to stop 'playing with fire' regarding Jerusalem, plan for clear negotiations.

By Jack Khoury Tags: Israel settlements Jordan king Israel news Jordan

Jordanian King Abdullah II on Monday advised Israel to stop "playing with fire" regarding the future of Jerusalem.

"Jerusalem is a red line and Israel must internalize the importance the city holds for Arabs and Christian Muslims, and stop playing with fire," said Abdullah.

If Arabs efforts to enforce a construction freeze in settlements do not come into fruition as a condition for renewed negotiations, said Abdullah, then the Americans and international community must intervene.

This intervention would be necessary to ensure that any negotiations focus on a permanent agreement, said Abdullah, including final borders, the status of Palestinian refugees and the future of Jerusalem.

The outcome of the negotiations, said the king, must promise the establishment of a Palestinian state along the 1967 borders, with Jerusalem as its capital.

Negotiations of this kind must be clearly outlined in advance and accomplished within a set timetable, added the king.

The leaders of Jordan and Egypt - only two Arab states to conclude official peace treaties with Israel so far - warned earlier this month that Israel's unilateral actions in East Jerusalem and other Arab areas were "derailing" efforts aimed at resuming peace negotiations with the Palestinians, and would thereby have a "catastrophic" effect on the region.

The remarks came in a joint communique issued at the end of a whirlwind visit to Cairo by Jordan's King Abdullah II where he held talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

The two leaders discussed the "catastrophic consequences on the region's stability and security resulting from the failure to seize the current opportunity for making peace," the statement said.]

Abdullah and Mubarak "stressed the need for an immediate cessation of Israeli unilateral actions, particularly the building of settlements and jeopardising the identity of Jerusalem and holy places, which could only derail the chances of peaces."

The leaders also echoed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' rejection of a fresh appeal by U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton to resume peace negotiations before Israel stopped all forms of settlement construction.

Ian Sent you three responses all written in same manner agreeing with you.You took the words out of my mouth.i.e What the british,or myself would call him:Abdullah is what we in Britain call a pip-squeak. He has nothing worthy to say,bar making funny little noises. What makes me laugh is:Whenever he is in public-be it now,or when visiting the US at the White House lawn,he is always frowning,to show how serious he is.Funny little man who is frightened to death(with good reason i may add)that the pals are going to relocate where their brethren all live anyway. This scares the shit out of him for sure. That sooner than later this will come to pass is a forgone conclusion.

First, remember the settlements have only been an issue since 1967. Prior to 67 there were no settlements and Israel still endured wars and terrorism. The way to peace is having partner to negotiate with. That means when power transfers, you honor your past agreements. Arafat allegedly accepted Israels "right to exist". Hamas the most recently elected group says it does NOT accept Israels "right to exist". By contrast Israel made peace treaties with Egypt (late 1970's) and Jordan (early 1980's) and has honored all agreements through multiple leadership changes. Palestinians have not honored past agreements, so who do you negotiate with? Stephen Connor your point is well taken. It is easy to blame the settlements. What about the Hamas charter, daily rocket and sniper attacks. The indoctrination of their children to hate Jews( Mein Kampf and Protocols of the Elders of Zion; runaway best sellers in the Arab world). Maybe these are obstacles too?

Hamas still has a charter that calls for the destruction of Israel. Hezbollah runs Lebanon and is dedicated to the destruction of Israel. So your idea that the Saudi plan would bring peace is naive at best. The difference is, if your wrong...and I think you are...and the 22 Arab states attack Israel, or even half of them,it's Jewish people in Israel who will die. While you will sit at home and write posts. You ask Israel to trade land for a piece of paper that the Arabs themselves would not enforce. Let me be clear if Israel accepted the Saudi plan its enemies would still attack Israel, period. The Saudi's are in no military position to enforce their plan and what Muslim country do you think would defend Israel?. Hamas and Hezbollah do not accept that plan anyway. Hamas cannot or will not even stop the rocket attacks for six months?

"Israel has no interest in giving back land. " 1) In order to "give back land," it must be given back to those who owned it in the first place. Jews living on properties which were Jewish-owned prior to 1948 wouldn't be "giving back land." 2) Israel gave up the Sinai, and more recently - Gaza. "THINKING" and "INTEGRITY" aren't the hallmarks of being blindly anti-Israeli.

You're right in that Ten Million Muslems have managed to murder each other since 1947. The death of 7 Million more Jews would be a regretable necessity at best. But you're also wrong. The new Settlements ARE the obstacle to beginning negotiations. Who knows, maybe the idea is, stop the Settlements, break up the Wall and dismantle road blocks, return the Golan, give back the Shaba Farms,Return East Jerusalem and admit millions of Palestinian Refugees back into Israel...and THEN there will be War. That's why, in my opinion Israel is stuck, with no way out but to build...and that's just plain wrong. a bit of Divine Intervention at this point wouldn't go amiss.

Israel however, needs to lay down the marker to the little Hashemite usurper across the river that Jerusalem is not going back to the Arabs--the only ones who have denied religious freedom there the last century. 1) What would happen if Israel would unilaterally laid down it`s weapons and vow not fight? If in addition Israel would accept the Saudi Plan which states Israel would be recognized by 22 Arab states including Palestine, then peace would reign. Problem is, Israel wants to steal more and more Palestinian land and water, that's why we don't have peace 2) What would happen if the Arab Palestinian laid down their weapons and vowed not to fight? Then Israel would accelerate the land theft in the WB and start forcibly transferring Palestinians into Jordan until Israel could annex the entire West Bank. -------------

When did Israel "invade" the land and hoes of the "Palestinian people"? in 1947, when UN Resolution 181 was adopted, perhaps? Or was it when the Arab armies invaded in Israel, once it declared Independence? Ah no, you must be referring to the '67 War or was it '73..but I think you will find the first was a justifiiable preemptive strike by Israel and the latter was actually an invasion OF Israel not BY Israel. I know, you're referring to Transjordan occupying the West Bank and Egypt, Gaza, after their failed invasion of Israel.. Jihad and Peace are incompatible..or, perhaps I have missed something..??

I'll ask everybody here just two questions: 1) What would happen if Israel would unilaterally laid down it's weapons and vow not fight? Answer: The Palestinians along with Israels enemies would immediately attack, killing every Jewish man, women and child with the intent to exterminate the Jewish race in Israel. 2) What would happen if the Arab Palestinian laid down their weapons and vowed not to fight? Answer: There would be peace. That is the difference in a nutshell! Most here who write against Israel simply want its destruction. They may try to hide their intention through hollow indignation, but in the end that is all that will satisfy them. We have a simple case of Good vs Evil. Israel wants peace. The Palestinians and their supporters simply want to kill the Jews. That is what I believe, and nothing I've read here convinces me otherwise. I think it's sad and sometimes I wonder...what the answer is, or could be?

The Pals have the same access to the legal system, free press and political office as any Jew so your "wretched treatment" remark is nonsense. In fact show me how many Arab countries allow Jews those same rights? or show me an Arab country besides Jordan that gives the Palestinian Arab those rights? Israel wants peace their response to murder and terrorism is settlement building a brilliant and non-violent way to get your enemy to the peace table. It says hurry or you won't have any land! There are many more reasons as well. How many do you want? The Palestinians have justification for continuing their resistance for many generations to come.

The Palestinians can have a state but not on their terms, on ours. Our weak governments have conceded enough. but instead of Abdullah welcoming the pals in Jordan he places the onus on Israel where the Pals won't feel at home anyway. Abdullah knows that if he ever caters minimally to the pals he would be no. 1 on their hit list.

It is to act as a security belt around Israel's most populated area, and therefore the favourite target of terrorists that kill just any citizen, including christians and muslims. They should be grateful and instead demand to have rockets fall on their head too, or suicide attacks to resume as in 2004, before the wall. That can't be right.

Christians are certainly terribly upset with what the wall and settlements are doing to Christian and Muslim areas in East Jerusalem. They often write in their bulletins and fliers and esp. during the high holidays and ask their fellow congregations to pray "for hearts and minds to be more open and accepting..." I suspects if Jesus of Nazareth lived today he would throw the peddlers out of the Temple area too. ( He threw out his own...) Still others complain about how disheartening they feel about the Christian message of "Peace and Goodwill to the World and Among Men" being barricaded behind the wall and settlements. It all seems so wrong as Christian and Muslim and Jewish tracks have always crissed crossed the Middle East since ancient times. That's a tradition that ought to be upheld to-day. Plus, there is something beautiful about diversity of people. It's like the natural order of the species...Dutch

Oh come on! The biblical claim of the Israelis on Jerusalem has value as much as other religious claims by Christians and Muslims. Using religious references is therefore simply counterproductive. It is also against current international law because Jerusalem is classified by the UN and other international organisations as occupied land. Jerusalem must serve as the capital of all peoples of the Holy Land; it must symbolise the wisdom and compassion of sharing the Promised Land. The only realistic way is to divide Jerusalem between Israel and the Pal state.

Jordan wants the Pals to be Israel's problem, not his. Not doing a very good job of it, is he? If they stay in Jordan, he might murder as many of them as his father. Or, next time, they murder him.

    Jordan a ?Western-oriented? country ?

A Jordanian court recently summoned twelve European citizens to answer criminal charges of blasphemy and inciting hatred. Critics of Islam face the imposition of a death sentence, ?if the charge is blasphemy and it is being tried by a sharia court. This isn?t a joke. It isn?t sufficient to avoid assisting to Jordan. It means the condemned ?libeler? needs to be careful to avoid assisting to any third country ? even just a stopover at its airport ? that has an extradition treaty with Jordan. It also indicates that Jordan ? which is lauded as western-oriented ? expects Muslim law to be obeyed by Europeans. The only reason to the existence of Jordan at : http://xrl.us/omvbu

It is clear that you are not exposed to the truth about Jerusalem. You read and listen to those who spew propaganda and you have no idea what is going on. For your information, for most days of the year, the Temple Mount is open to all Muslims of all ages. This is fact. Ask any honest Palestinian who lives in Jerusalem and prays regularly on the mount. And by the way, if the Temple Mount would ever pass into Palestinian hands, Israeli Palestinians will find themselves on the wrong side of the fence. So when Transjordan and Palestine were divided by the colonial powers into Jewish and Arab independent entities, what we got was two Palestinian entities and a third that was mixed, a real curse.

I think it is Abdullah who should internalize the importance of Jerusalem to the Jews, and yes Christians. Jerusalem is Judaism's holiest city. The city where the the Rabbi Jesus grew angry at the religious Jewish establishment for allowing money changers onto the Temple Mount (yes there was a Jewish Temple there). In the meantime, the Arab population of Jerusalem has grown at least 5 fold since 1967, and when there is no violence instigated by religious Muslim hotheads, any Muslim from the city or Israel can pray there. My question is what does Abdullah want? Does he want Jews to simply deny their history and give up it's long standing rightful claim to Jerusalem because the Arab world thinks the Torah is a collection of lies? Your a King, act like one who understands things.

Gaza should be the capital of any future Palestinian state. We have seen in the past that the Arab communities are not capable of maintaining Jerusalem in a dignified state. All Jewish places of worship were destroyed or damaged and grave stones were used to pave roads.

Funny how if someone else does it wrong and you don't do it right either, you find it OK. You say "pot calling kettle black" and don't see the irony in it. We haven't succeeded in setting an example and showing how it should be done. Yes, Muslims have a right to their places of prayer in Jerusalem, but only if they're over 45 or over 50 depending, they don't live in this or that part of the West Bank or, heaven forfend, anywhere in Gaza. As for foreign Muslims from countries with which we have peace treaties and/or business ties, we never hear about conditions obtaining for them. Unfortunately, the only way to ensure freedom of access for the three religions is to make it a joint effort.

King Abdullah, Israel has been covering your back. When your family controlled Jerusalem you forbad Jews from praying anywhere near the Temple Mount including the Western Wall. Freedom of religion there was not. Maybe you should keep quite regarding Jerusalem. You blew it last time around. As much as we admire a side of the Hashemites who photograph well in the palaces of Europe, there is something instinctively wrong in how a minority in Jordan maintains power, especially since the Hashemites moved to Jordan. In Israel at least, Jews are a majority and are native to this land. The only way to insure freedom of religion in Jerusalem, and you know it, is to keep the city united under Israeli control. If you are not concerned about freedom of religion, then maybe the Christian world needs to finally get fully behind Israel.

Today who can blame King Abdullah of Jordan for having sleepless nights regarding East Jerusalem if not East Jerusalem then the Fatah will declare Amman as their capital. King Abdullah is aware that Mahmoud Abbas can get all the support they require to declare a Palestinian State if they so wish from all their anti- Israel cronies and from their innocent friends and dictators who have no blood on their hands like Syria, Lybia , Sudan, at the "Good For Nothing Organisation called U.N. ". However independence alone will not satisfy Fatah's and Hamas's radical appitite to take over all of Israel and Jordan. They are likely with in a very short period of time while the coals are still hot if ever declaring independence to start their coup d'etat in Jordan with the help of their Palestinians supporters , who exceed at least 65% of Jordan's population. It will be their time for " The Pay Back" and once and for all to finish off what Arafat did not achieve in his life time and that is to overthrow the kingdom of Jordan . The Palestinians ultimate goal will be to aquire a modern Palestinian (Ex Jordanian) Air Force ,a well equiped army and an established international Palestinian (Ex Jordanian) Airways. We all know what happened and why the king of Jordan expeled the PLO in 1970. Arafat later lied to the world without battering an eye lid that the Jordanian army killed between 10,000 and 25,000 Palestinians, although a far,far more conservative estimates put the number nowhere any near those figuers , with the result that no one will ever know the true figure. It is a known fact that the PLO just love to exaggerate and lie through their teeth. One can now understand why inteligent people do not believe a word in the Goldstone report. .
