The Jerusalem police arrested a Jewish teenager on Thursday on suspicion that he had stabbed a 42-year-old Arab man in the stomach earlier in the day. The 16-year-old boy turned himself in, telling police that he had acted in self defense after the man attacked him.

The Arab man was hospitalized in moderate condition following the stabbing. The suspect fled the scene immediately following the event.

The victim sustained numerous wounds to his stomach during the attack on Levi Eshkol street on the city's northeast side.

Police have not yet narrowed down a motive for the attack, and could not comment on whether it was criminal or nationalist in nature.

Prior to apprehending the suspect, a police helicopter was dispatched to search for the assailant across the city.

A Jerusalem district police official said that the man suspected of carrying out the attack had no criminal background, and was likely a religious Jew.

"Questioning of the victim has revealed that the assailant was a yarmulke-wearing Jew, and had no prior relationship with the victim," said the official. According to the victim, the assailant just approached him, stabbed him once, and fled.
