Jerusalem top cop: City's Muslims 'ungrateful'

Aharon Franco says police did its best to secure Ramadan prayers, will continue to work against rioters.

By Jack Khoury and Liel Kyzer Tags: Jerusalem Israel news Temple Mount

Jerusalem District Police Chief Aharon Franco said on Monday that the city's Muslim inhabitants were "ungrateful," referring to recent violent clashes between Arab rioters and the police near the Temple Mount.

Commenting on recent unrest in the capital, Franco said that "there is a degree of ungratefulness from the side the city's Muslim population after the police had worked to ensure peaceful prayers in the Temple Mount throughout the month of Ramadan."

Franco also said that the police would work to prevent any kind of disorderly conduct in the capital.

Arab lawmakers reacted mockingly to the Jerusalem police chief's statement, accusing authorities of denying Muslims the freedom of worship in the holy city.

"[Franco's statements show that] not all the Jews are smart," MK Ahmed Tibi (United Arab List-Ta'al) said. "The Israel Police is impinging on Muslims' freedom of worship. Even God did not place restrictions like that one which limits access to Temple Mount to those over the age of 50."

"Even an occupying force is obligated to enable freedom of worship," Tibi said.

"We don't need any favors from you," Tibi said, directing his remarks to the Jerusalem police chief. "You and your friends will fulfill your obligation toward us as citizens and as human beings."

"You need to be given a course in democracy and the values of equality," Tibi said of Franco. "[Public Security] Minister [Yitzhak Aharonovich] once labeled us Arabushim (loosely translated as "dirty Arabs"), which also means 'ungrateful'. And to think that these are the people responsible for preserving law and order."

"The time has come to weed out the paternalistic attitude within the police toward Arab citizens," Tibi said.

Balad chairman MK Jamal Zahalka called for Franco's dismissal from the force. "The time has come for the Israeli establishment to understand that Al-Aqsa is a holy site for Muslims, and it is natural that any attempt to harm it will touch off harsh responses and will ignite a conflagration," Zahalka said.

The Balad chief said that the police presence in the mosques constitutes a trespassing of a holy place. "If they don't want demonstrations, then have them end the occupation in Jerusalem and the mosques," Zahalka said.

"The district chief has contracted a virus more harmful than swine flu, and that is the flu of racism and hatred of Arabs," said MK Taleb a-Sana (United Arab List ? Ta'al). "The Arabs are not asking for charity or favors, and they are present in Jerusalem by right and have been long before [Franco] dreamed of being there."

"He bears responsibility for ensuring the right to pray for all ethnic groups," a-Sana said. "He is not the police chief of the Jews but rather for all residents of Jerusalem, and if he is not capable of ensuring this, then I call on him to resign."

The Jerusalem District police chief's remarks came after Arab youths hurled stones at Haredi worshippers at the Mount of Olives earlier Monday, as Jerusalem was bracing for a possible new round of clashes amid growing Temple Mount tensions.

Police and border police forces arrested the rioters. No injuries were reported on either side.

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of Jewish worshipers, heavily guarded by police and border police units, concluded the traditional priestly blessing in the Western Wall on Monday.

Despite earlier concerns of a another outbreak of violence, no violent incidents were recorded during the ceremony, held a day after Arab rioters clashed with police after the Islamic Movement urged Arab demonstrators to come to the Temple Mount to "defend Al-Aqsa [Mosque]."

In one incident, at about 10 A.M. on Sunday, Arabs from northern Israel and East Jerusalem began throwing stones and bottles at police on Motta Gur St., near the Old City's Lions Gate.

Two policemen were lightly wounded and five demonstrators were arrested.

On Sunday afternoon, Arabs threw stones and Molotov cocktails at a Border Police roadblock near the Shuafat refugee camp. The incident produced no casualties.

Also Sunday, police arrested the deputy head of the Islamic Movement, Sheikh Kamel Khatib, and Hatem Abdel Qader, who is in charge of Jerusalem for the PA's ruling Fatah party, on suspicion of incitement to violence.

A court released them on bail on condition that they stay out of the Old City for 15 days.

As a result of these incidents, police restricted entry to the Temple Mount Monday to Muslim worshipers aged 50 or older - a move that has in the past proven effective in preventing clashes on the mount.

It also barred Jews and tourists from entering the mount, to forestall friction with Muslim worshipers.

Thousands of policemen and border policemen were stationed in the Old City and throughout both East and West Jerusalem to protect the tens of thousands of visitors who were expected to flock there Monday.

If Islam cannot respect Judaism but only it`s own rituals and holidays, what kind of religion is this.-JO Muslims must observe the Jewish holidays regardless. I do recall reading that the west bank would be locked down during Yom Kipper. On other occasions, and with regularity Israel regulates what Muslims groups may worship at their holy place (for example people under 50 restricted). JO, why can?t Jews respect Islam and why do they restrict the worship of Muslims and sanction them during Jewish holidays?

The Jewish people suffered horrible crimes against them but now they are making the Palestinians suffer as much.I always believe what Israel said about the Palestinians and there crimes, but with television and camcorders I now see the evil crimes of the IDF beating unarmed people shooting at unarmed farmers also shooting at fishermen and there soliders breaking the arms of captured people with rocks and this so called moral army shooting a blindfoled man from close range while been held by a police Colonel. During the month of Ramadan Israel's Police has done all that it could to ensure calm and order in the city and throughout the country, largely based on the requests of leaders in the Muslim community. Yet, now the very same leaders - religious and political - are at the forefront of incitement against Jews for incitement's sake, hoping to bring about unrest during the Jewish holiday season of Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Sukkot. This is a form of ungratefulness and Mr. Franco is totally right in that.

I couldn't believe the title when I first read it! From which planet did this man come? Do you ask the victim to be grateful to the aggressor? He must be so blind to ignore the fact that the Palestinians are defending their holy places against violent extremist settlers supported as ever by armed to the teeth thuggish quasi military border police troops. The Palestinian defenders have no weapons to defend themselves with while fanatical Jews carry semi automatic guns and are always allowed to intimidate and even attack passersby in the Old City. The Israeli government is trying to expel the defenders from the Mosque Compound so it can allow fanatical Jews to gain access and threaten the safety and tranquillity of the place. It's a question of the kettle calling the pot black.

When have Jews been allowed to desecrate Islamic holy sites? On the contrary it really is the other way around, in the case of Jordanian Occupation, the West Bank of today, and former Jewish communities in the Muslim world. You should personally take a trip to the Old City of Jerusalem and see for yourself just how much the Israeli, yes Israeli police, protects the Muslim residents and the entire Haram E-Sharif complex. You have no idea how strict they are about not letting Jews in during Muslim prayer time. The Israeli police even tells us not to wear a Kippah (head covering), as the sight of a Jew is apparently offensive to some.

The Israeli police represent a system that keeps Israeli Arabs as second class citizens who pay the same teaxes, but get a fraction of the public services that Jews get. Israeli Arabs in Jerusalem are under added pressure because the government this cop defends is intent on increasing the number of Jews in the city and decreasing the number of Arabs. Because of this Arabs find it very hard to get building permits, while Jews have much less trouble. And the Arabs aren't grateful for all this? Tut, tut. It's enough to make a grown cop weep.

I truly appreciate your comments about Sukkot, but not only Jews from Israel go to Jerusalem during this pilgrimage festival, but also Jews (like me) from other countries try to go there as well. In addition, the week corresponds with a Christian holicay and there are often busloads of Christians who come to pray at their churches in Jerusalem during thw week. But to the Muslims, who think theirs is the only religion, these people are of no worth.

If they just left them alone, next week the old city and the Wall would be back to normal size. This week is one of the three pilgrimage weeks in Judaism in which all religious Jews from all over Israel visit the Wall and pray. Not everyone lives in Jerusalem. This week has no significance in Islam- so why do they cause trouble- they are well aware of this week and it's reasons. If Islam cannot respect Judaism but only it's own rituals and holidays, what kind of religion is this. Rmours of such takeover of Temple Mount are wrong (and the know it) Judaism is far more respectful.

The Jordanians captured the Jewish quarter of the old city and what did they do? Dynamite the synagogues and bar access to the Western Wall. Israel takes back the old city in 1967 and what happens; the Waqf is free to rule the temple mount. How do they respond? By decades of incitement and violence against the Jews. It's time to close the mosques there for a few months and see if that doesn't take the wind out of their sails.
