J'lem mayor warns of Jewish minority in capital within decade

At cabinet meeting to mark 40 years since reunification of capital, PM pledges NIS 5.75B to city over next 5 years.

By Haaretz Service and Nadav Shragai

Jerusalem Mayor Uri Lupolianski warned Sunday that the city of Jerusalem will not have a Jewish majority in less than a decade.

Lupolianski was speaking at a special cabinet meeting at the Menachem Begin Heritage Center in Jerusalem, to mark the 40th anniversary of the reunification of the city.

The mayor maintained that the primary problem in the city was a demographic one even though "there those who say claims that Jerusalem will be ours forever."

We won't be satisfied with crumbs. We need a comprehensive plan," he added.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert promised to allocate NIS 5.75 billion to the capital city over the next five years, and announced he would also cancel employer tax for Jerusalem.

Olmert pledged to transfer more government facilities to the city, to build a study center to focus on the city's history, using an endowment from the Yad Ben-Zvi non-profit organization, and to construct a complex of courthouses in the center of the city.

He said that the measures would "advance and encourage Jerusalem."

"We want to assure the economic strength of the city," said the director-general of the Prime Minister's Office, Ra'anan Dinur. "These measures will greatly assist in achieving this goal."

Hadash Chairman MK Mohammad Barakeh slammed the decision to hold the meeting at the Begin Center, which overlooks the Old City.

The Israeli Arab lawmaker said that "holding the government meeting across from the walls of the Old City, celebrating the occupation of the city, is a provocation."

He said that there would be "no peace without two capital cities in Jerusalem," and expressed the hope that "next year, the Palestinian government will convene in East Jerusalem."

The ambassadors from the European Union states have turned down invitations to attend Wednesday's Jerusalem Day celebrations, due to the disputed status of East Jerusalem, Army Radio reported Sunday.

The Mayor of Jerusalem has also been shouting about the fact that foreign embassies are not present in Jerusalem. Israel might recognise Jerusalem as it's capital, it is a pity the rest of the world doesn't from an Israeli perspective. What will be interesting is when this mayor starts knocking holes in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Looking forward to World reaction to that. I think it will take Israel 30 seconds to back down.

Jewish donations! U.N., PA Building on Jewish-Owned Land in Jerusalem by Aaron Klein, WorldNetDaily.com April 12, '07 (IsraelNN.com) Land in Jerusalem owned by a Jewish group and purchased primarily using Jewish donor funds has been used for the illegal construction of dozens of Palestinian apartment buildings, a refugee camp and a United Nations school, WorldNetDaily (WND) has learned. The Jewish-owned lands, estimated to be worth about $38 million, recently were blocked off from Jewish sections of Jerusalem and isolated to Arab neighborhoods by Israel's security fence. The Jewish National Fund, an international nonprofit organization that owns the properties, has seemingly done little to boot the Arab squatters from its land, while the Israeli government, which manages the areas, did not halt the illegal Arab construction on the Jewish-owned properties... Illegal Arab construction on Jewish-owned lands is not limited to Jerusalem... (See comments 2 & 3)

we are the original inhabitants who werwe thrown out 1872 years ago. Over the centuries we filtered back. the arabs are either Islamicised Jews ( Common DNA patterns)or squatters who have taken over the land in the name of Islam. We have reaserted our sovereignty in our country and have proven to the world and to our assimilating masse in the diaspora that we are a bona fide people and sovereign nation. Asssimilation in the diaspora to a limited degree has been curbed.

Jewish donations! Arabs are reportedly building without permits on JNF-owned property in the Galilee and in areas outside Bethlehem… http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/122078 Jewish group misleading donors? By Aaron Klein WorldNetDaily.com April 30, 2007 In response to queries by concerned donors, Jewish National Fund CEO Russell Robinson sent letters stating the land highlighted by WND "was under Jordanian management prior to 1967.".. .A photo taken in 1991 of one of the sites, Shoafat, shows the entire area was a forest – meaning all illegal Arab construction took place after 1967 while the land was under Jewish control. An aerial photo taken in 1967 of the second site, Qalandiya, which is now a large Arab town, finds construction of a U.N. building but few other sites, indicating the vast majority of Arab construction – dozens of large apartment complexes – occurred under JNF control... http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=55444 Write

Jihad takes on many forms--not just war--but also demographics--as is seen in Europe--and in Jerusalem. As infidels we need to resist jihad to the last breath--the alternative is dhimmitude and death.

You don't have to worry about Jews becoming the majority in any country and to a lesser extent most Christian's either because they know their limit to how many children they can afford. When I say afford,I don't mean just financial (which is the least major concern) it's the time and dedication to groom the children to become good productive individuals. At the rate the world population is growing and the direction our liberal society is going, one day, our world society will be slaves to non- productive ignorent socities. But I doubt this can be tolerated.

There is so much OVERBUILDING and OVERCROWDING and the city is filled with rude disrespectful Haredim - no wonder people don't want to live there. Israel should keep as much green spaces as possibile in Jerusalem and develop areas like the Negev and Galil for Jews to live. Give employer incentives in those places.

The reality is Jerusalem will have to be divided with the Palestinians. That's what I'd tell Israel as president if it wants a final settlement of its entire conflict with the Arab world. Nevertheless peace is more likely to happen if America doesn't play Mommy trying to breakup chronic quarreling between a brother and sister of about the same size and age. Key to the Arab world getting serious about making a final deal will be a Klein Administration's general policy of letting nations fight to a final battlespace victory. Too much blood has been spent in the ME fighting from one ceasefire to another.

Exactly. Jerusalem thanks to mayor Uri Lupolianski Jerusalem has become a city of inotllerance and hatred. Prehaps if he was more tollerant to secular people the number of jews would swell. He and he alone is responsible for creting this orthadox ghetto known as Jerusalem and now he comes crying !

The capital city of Israel is Tel Aviv says the world. You have no embassies in the city of Jerusalem; doesn't that give you some clue? Peace will come when Jews give up the zionist project and learn to share the land with the original inhabitants. And you are damn lucky to have that much!

and the Muslim Quarter of the Old City should be part of the a Palestinian state. West Jerusalem and the Jewish Quarter will remain areas of Israeli sovereignty. The city will be kept as an open city, with Israel/Palestine international border crossings on the outskirts. This solution, spelled out in detail in the shelved peace plans, will solve the problem of each side not wanting to be subject to the other side, and eliminate this concern about demographics.

Disperse all Arabs who moved to Jerusalem after 1967 (in search of the new-found prosperity caused by Israeli presence) to their previous places of residence in the West Bank. BTW, once it was announced that the security barrier (THE W-A-L-L-L-L) was going to be built, there was an immediate massive influx of West Bank Arabs into Jerusalem. They knew oin which side of the fence they wanted to be and why.

What do you expect? When the govt spends more effort catering to the Palestinians than to Jews don't be surprised when Jerusalem slips away. The first mistake was not blasting those 2 mosques to bits the first minutes the Temple mount was ours. It's only been downhill since. We can't even build stairs by the Temple mount without the world shouting. And then we back down because we agree the Arabs set policy for their city Jerusalem. We've relinquished our claim to Jerusalem and the Arabs know it.

In the 19th century, the Jewish population in Europe jumped by leaps and bounds. Many towns in East Central and Eastern Europe had a Jewish majority. That wasn't a problem, unless you were a despicable antisemite. However, when Jews are threatened with becoming a minority in Jerusalem, that's a problem. The Mayor doesn't mention the poverty of Jerusalem Arabs, nor the lack of municipal services in the Arab sector. Nor does he mention the growing population and power of the haredi sector, which also keeps the city poor and repels many secular Jews.

Demolish more Palestinian homes in an effort to Judaize the city by making life so impossible so that the Palestinian inhabitants will go elsewhere? Who gave you East Jerusalem anyway...It is occupied territory and not yours "forever." Extremely dangerous talk coming from an official of any city. I wonder how it would be received if any city in America started to warn it was going to lose its Christian majority to Jews and that something needed to be done about it.

Take the test! Who is wiser? The Jewish answer to demographics is pouring money into buildings and material things. The Arab answer to demographics is producing more children.
