Israeli war film 'Lebanon' wins Golden Lion in Venice

Director dedicates prestigious award to former soldiers who 'come back from war safe and sound.'

By News Agencies and City Mouse Online Tags: Lebanon Israel news IDF

Lebanon, an Israeli film that recounts Israel's 1982 invasion of its northern neighbor through soldiers' eyes, won the top prize at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday.

The festival jury announced the Golden Lion and other prizes on the last day of the 11-day screening of films from around the world.

The anti-war film, directed by Samuel Maoz, tells the story of Israeli paratroopers searching a hostile town. The conflict is seen through the binocular-aided eyes of those aboard an armored vehicle.

"I dedicate this work to people all over the world that come back from the war safe and sound," the director told the audience at the award ceremony. "They work, get married, have children, but the memories get stuck in their souls."

Maoz was a young man when he served as a combat soldier in the Israel Defense Forces during the invasion.

The operation led to a two-decade long occupation by Israel.

Variety has described the film as the boldest and best of the recent mini-wave of Israeli movies; the New York Times has called "an astonishing piece of cinema."

The awards jury was headed by Ang Lee, himself a Golden Lion-winning director.

Iranian-born Shirin Neshat, meanwhile, won the Silver Lion for best director for "Women Without Men", which chronicles the lives of four women from different walks of life against the backdrop of Iran's foreign-backed coup in 1953.

"This film speaks to the people of Iran fighting to find democracy and it speaks to the government of Iran," she told the closing ceremony.

"I plead to this government to give the people what they should have: basic human rights, freedom and democracy," she added, wearing a green bracelet to symbolize the color of recent street protests against President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

At the festival on Saturday, best actor went to Britain's Colin Firth in designer Tom Ford's directorial debut "A Single Man" and best actress went to Russian Ksenia Rappoport for "La Doppia Ora."

Without going very far you can find beautiful palestinian movies.. I can think of 'the time that remains' for example, and it's not suleiman's first movie either. Those palestinian movies are probably not as marketed as the israeli ones (god knows why ;) ) but they exist ! That said I don't know if it's possible to bridge the gap... This movie will probably feel like watlz with bashir. Very beautiful, but infuriating at the same time

of peoples psychology whether as individuals, ethnic groups, religious denominations and nations.Moaz film and by extend Israeli societies acts are not unique to Jews. All,I stress all people in the world go through war acts at various points in time. After collapse of Soviet Union only fools were to believe that conflcits between various splinter nations will live in peace. You had since had wars between Armenia and Azerbedjan (Nagorno Kribakh),Chehcnya and Rusia,Russia vs Georgia and on/of conficts which may yet lead to war between Russia and Ukraine.China keeps an Iron grip over the North east Moslem population and Tibet.China never gave up on Taiwan sooner or later either Taiwan surrenders voluntarily to give up or CPR will invade Taiwan when an opportunity comes up.Turkey has an ongoing conflict with Kurds and may yet invade Iraq Kurdish region if Iraq central government is in serios trouble.India and Pakistan fight over Kashmir.Argentina fought UK in 82 on Faukland.Cont in Part 2

is so 19th century. Here in NZ we are currently apologising and attempting to make reparation for our settler excesses. May I remind you that it is now the 21st century, and settler enterprises are supposedly no longer acceptable among civilised nations ( if there are any). It is becoming tedious to listen to people trying to justify conquest and colonisation today as if nothing has changed in the last two hundred years.

Shows Israeli boys fighting in the IDF as caring humans, something we don't get to see much of here in Germany. All we see on BBC and DW are miserable Arabs day in day out. Getting pretty repetitive after a while. Good job Moaz.

Settlement in North Carolina, similar to Palestine?
    • Joe Sittizen

    • 09:33

BBSNews lives in North Carolina, where there appear to be no native American reservations (commonly referred to as Indian Reservations) at all. http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/northcarolina/ How could this be? What happened to the native population? How is it that the settlers (BBSNews' ancestors, we assume) managed to totally wipe out the indigenous people? Any survivors were shipped north and North Carolina appears to be native American free. To the naive reader, this certainly sounds like successful genocide, with the settlers occupying the land and reaping the benefits, while the victims were simply wiped off the map. Does North Carolina really belong to the descendents of the refugees who were forced out? Should BBSNews leave his home and hand it over to the great great great grandchildren of the native Americans in New York state and Pennsylvania descended from the Tuscorora? What do you say, BBSNews? How do you justify your living on stolen land?

why is it so difficult to understand that there is no white or black in a conflict? Sure that there is suffering on both sides. the blame is to the leaders and not to the citizens. and if i am wrong it is the arab leaders who are eager to destroy israel and its citizens. and bbsnews and the others encourage them to do so.

English "Academics" would have boycotted these: it shows israelis which think different than Liberman. That's not good for the unity of the Pro Pal? (no, anti Israel, normal Pals never get a benefit from them) front. Not a say about Iranian's people suffering. Ecologists don't have a word for states that produce thousands of tomes of oil? As a leftist I feel ashamed

If your hopes are based on no more wars between the arab world and Israel then I would suggest that the Israelis start acting like mature people...cut out the hatred...cut out the ugly and vicious anti-Arab and Muslim bigotry....cut out the vision of pushing the Palestinians into the sea or to Jordan...and cut out the desire to destroy the Palestinians. Maybe then things will calm down...and you can join Israel at the table of peace but until you have the manners to eat at the table you and yours will suffer mightily.

...that is one of the most succinct and to the point answers I have ever seen to those wingnuts who incessantly chant there's no such thing as a Palestinian. Given that there are millions of Palestinians, many of them refugees due to Israel's birth, it is indeed barbaric to keep claiming that they don't exist therefore they don't deserve human rights. Good job.

Of course the Arabs have only ever wanted peace just look at Hamas or Hezballah TV or the racist lies and blood libels in the Islamic CONTROLLED media. Not to mention their refusal of peace and/or borders for generations. They have changed tack now, they will accept Israel as long as they can occupy it.

Enough, already, with the efforts to sanctify the ethnic cleansing of Palestine via lazy wordplay. Even if "Palestine" were not an ancient word, with sources in Egyptian, Assyrian, Greek, and even Hebrew texts, the idea that human rights depend on belonging to a recognized nation state is absolutely barbaric.

No need to wait 20 years for a movie about Gaza. Just go to YouTube, and search on Gaza rockets. Some really good stuff on how they determine the correct aim to Sderot. Your friends look really intelligent as they fire away. Gaza was warned, many times. It is sad that it took Cast Lead to get the message through that the rockets were not appreciated. But like Ben Franklin said, "Experience holds a dear school, but a fool will learn in no other."

Very popular name, Ksenia, Slavic form of Greek Xenia, from "xeno-," referring to "stranger, different," but since strangers were accepted as guests in ancient Hellas, the meaning of "guest, welcoming, hospitable" is also applied. Rappoport is a well-known Jewish family name with different interpretations. Googling will only intrigue but not fully satisfy those who want to know the true origin of the last name.

Another 'yorim ve'bochim' (shoot and cry) movie! Gimme a friggin' break. Twenty years from now, some director/opportunist will be making his 'shoot and cry' movie about Gaza. The point of these films (like 'Waltzing With Bashir') is to portray Israelis as the victims, not the Arabs who are gunned down. ("Look how moral we are; we have such empathy for those we kill.") None of these 'anti-war' directors had the courage to oppose Cast Lead. If you don't shoot, you won't have to cry. And don't give me the 'they want to wipe us off the map' twaddle. It is you who have not only threatened to wipe Palestine off the map, you have actually done so.

At least Israelis make films, gain hearts and prizes. With thousands, if not millions Pals in the diaspora, many of them wealthy, it is increadible that they have never, ever managed to make some good, interesting stories. Nothing. Being the victims they could manage to gain some attention, but we get nothing. They just complain and whine. This is becoming boring, dude.

and yet, they Arabs seem not have learned a thing. Lebanon is still trying to recreate another war, Gaza seems intent on using her missiles aimed solely for Israel. Iran makes threats to "wipe Israel off the map." What's wrong w/ this picture? All the while demanding Israel stop building and w/ draw to the pre '67 lines. ( which they may have held except for the hostilities they created ) And they wonder why no one likes them, much less can tolerate them. Could it be because they're 'stuck on stupid."? USA just remembered 9-11. NEVER AGAIN! The Arabs could have enjoyed a better standard of living, education, advancement in so many things if they didn't keep trying to murder all Israeli's.( and the rest of the innocents they've murdered) They end up losing 10 to 1 ( at least) for their efforts. They will never know a victory, they are cursed to be repeatedly defeated.
