Israeli film comparing Holocaust to occupation loses state funds

Odem tells the story of two Palestinian women who decide to sneak into Jerusalem one night.

By Haaretz Service and City Mouse Tags: Holocaust Israel news

The Israel Film Fund has ended its financial support for director Yonatan Segal's new piece Odem, after learning that it compares Israel's occupation of the West Bank to the Holocaust.

Segal is best known as the star of the 1978 Israeli film Lemon Popsicle (Eskimo Lemon).

In an article published last Friday in Yedioth Ahronot, Israeli journalist Yair Lapid cited a passage from the marketing brochure for Odem, in which Segal wrote:

"It took a lot to convince the Israel Film Fund that the occupation is worse than Israel has ever admitted too and that it is possible to compare the occupation to the Holocaust."

Lapid took issue to this comment, and criticized the fact that such a film was receiving financial support from a government body.

In the wake of Lapid's article, the executive director of the Israel Film Fund announced that support for the film has been cut off.

Odem, which is currently being filmed, is a story that jumps in time and tells of two Palestinian women who decide to sneak into Jerusalem one night.

The Israel Film Fund pledged NIS 1.3 million for production of the film, and has already invested NIS 850,000 of that sum.

Comparing the two is shameful, yet the occupation is bad

Comparing the Holocaust to the occupation of the West Bank is unacceptable. However he does have a point: the occupation is eating the soul of Israel. It ate the sould of all European countries during the colonial era and 50 years later, many of them have not yet fully recovered. The occupation of the West bank eats taxpayer's money, destroys Israel's image abroad, monopolizes young soldiers, and brings back nothing.

segal is saying it can be compared to the holocaust... and usually, the term "can be compared to" does NOT refer to something that's identical, but rather it suggests that there are certain elements that are similar; like ideologies, goals, and/or practices. otherwise the term "no different than" or "exactly like", would have been used. and the fact IS, that there ARE parallels that can be drawn between the two. there were many other aspects of the nazi agenda against the jewish people beside the camps and genocide; many of which began well before them.

Israel uses 100 to 1 in retaliation to arab resistence. Should the U.S. use the same 100 to 1 to retaliate for the USS LIBERTY ATTACK?

I have been to Auschwitz-Birkenau on two separate visits. My surname appears many times on the death roles of the German Nazi death camps. I have been to Israel. I have spent five weeks in the West Bank experiencing the occupation first hand. I believe I can speak with some credibility. Art can sometimes convey truth much more effectively than government news releases. Suppressing art is a last resort of a troubled government. Yet our shared Judaic heritage has always prized truth and justice.

I am a certified "left-wing nut case" and "Israel-basher". But on this one, I agree with the critics of the director. The Shoah was one of the worst crimes of all human history, maybe the worst. In six short years, the Nazis and their allies murdered two-thirds of Europe's Jews (one-third of the world's total) and unlike other genocides, Hitler's objective was to murder every Jew on the planet. Does that sound like what the Israelis are doing? It's bad enough what they are doing to the Palestinians without equating it with the Shoah. I don't say the Palestinians are not vulnerable to a genocide. Indeed, if Israel wanted to send them to the gas chambers, there is no military force on the planet that could stop them. But that is not what Israel has done. They have imposed an apartheid regime, not an exterminationist regime. There's a big difference between being dead and being alive. Once the state gives the money, though its censorship to try to cut it off.

Jenin was a refugee camp from which attacks were launched on Israel. Israel (as it should have) attacked the camp and killed 200 or so armed militants. Though widely reported as a massacre of civilians, no evidence was ever found that supported such a claim. The difference here my friend is that I can admit the truth while you still refuse to do so. To infer that every Gazan supports Hamas and is therfore a pseudo-combatant is ridiculous. To kill them based upon such an inference is immoral. I say again...what you post differs from Holocaust denial...but only in degree. Killing innocent Jews in Germany in 1945 was wrong...killing innocent Gazans in 2009 is just as wrong.

Bill, I do think around 300 so called civilians were killed...and around 800 or so known hamas fighters were killed...why do I call them "so called civilians"? maybe because they support hamas, allow hamas to use their homes to store weapons, allow hamas to use their children on rooftops, to allow hamas to use their mosques...that's why they are not REALLY civilians under the laws of warfare according to the geneva convention... do you remember jenin bill? if you do, why don't you tell us how the reporting of that operation went down....lets see what you 'think' you know bill. If you understand jenin, you will be able to better understand cast lead. (that's just a little hint for you my friend in oklahoma)

... Then you'd realize that Gaza is a stroll in the park. What keeps it from being a stroll in paradise by comparison is the manifestation of evil still being perpetrated by Hamas there. The term "Holocaust" is already taken and it's already oversaturated with its original, ghastly acts of murder by the Nazis, mostly against Jews. Go study to find the right words to describe the mostly self-inflicted wounds by the Palestinians and don't speak from ignorance on this sensitive topic.

Comparing current events with The Holocaust is a direct result of Israeli politicians amongst others using The Holocaust to justify current Israeli actions. Netanyahu even invoked The Holocaust in the Knesset only last week to stifle legitimate criticism of his government. And your right the suffering of the Palestinians doesn't compare to the suffering of the Jewish people during the Shoah, but it is the misuse of the deads memory which is blurring the lines

Settlers were removed from their illegal homes - and then compensated monetarily - felt perfectly free to compare their plight to the suffering of Jews during the Holocaust. Neither comparison is apt, but it seems that the treatment of Palestinians in the west bank is closer to the mark.

300 so called 'civilians' were killed in cast lead. Civilians who let hamas use them and their houses, mosques, UN buildings, hospitals and ambulances as cover. How many jews were killed DAILY in nazi occupied europe? The comparison is totally wild and unsupportable. It boggels the mind to think that israelis, much less anyone, can really think that israel's "occupation" approaches anything close to the holocuast..this comparison is sickening.

"Waltzing with Bashir" was honest. Goldstone was honest. Now the honesty is getting to be too much. When a nation believes it has to censor art and personally attack its own righteous, it has abandoned a rich heritage. Truth and justice are no longer held in esteem.
