There are 8500 Jews living in the entire Arab world, while their are 1.6 million Palestinians in Israel. Jews are barred from living in every Arab country, except a few thousand Jews who live in Morocco and Tunisia. Israel offered the Palestinians a state in 2000; accepted the Clinton Parameters in 2000-01; and offered a state again at the end of 2008. The Palestinians rejected every offer, becoming the first people in history to reject a state 6 times and then set conditions for discussing another one. The Arabs continually initiate the violence. The Israelis have not fired the first shots. Do the Palestinians expect not to be fired back on? Its ok for them to blow up school kids on buses, shopping malls, disco's, pizzeria's and Passover seders. That's why I personally think people like Naftali Bennett are dangerous for Israel and we won't reach a peace settlement with such Greater Israel ideologues.

Total takeover has been the plan since 1967, and probably before that, whatever the propaganda that was put out for the naive world. The fact is, Israel has been one country since 1967--with one part under civilian rule and one part under military rule (in effect, applying once-hated British law). The "peace process" was always a tactic. The so-called Palestinian state was never going to be a real state, just a reservation. Now even that is in doubt. Israel has it all and is not going to let go. The problem is what to do about the Palestinians. Israeli policy on all sides has always been to make life sufficiently miserable for that so that they would leave, but they haven't left. So what now? One option is a repressive racist state, the other is one that treats all equally. The third option, which the right must be thinking about daily, is to eject the Palestinians. But that is only conceivable in wartime, after sufficient provocation, which may be why war is so attractive.

Context does matter. The Palestinian Arabs have never abandoned their hopes of eliminating the State of Israel, after having tried on a number of occassions with the help of their Arab brothers. Therefore as far as I am concerned, the State of Israel has no moral obligation to retreat to dangerous borders (12km wide in some cases while conceding the strategic highlands of Samaria). This is an unpleasant reality, but reality nonetheless. It should come as no wonder that many of the patchwork countries with adversarial ethnic groups cobbled together in the last century are crumbling. With all due respect to their high ideals, we should not let the international community dictate for us to commit suicide. The occupation is corrupting as AH has written on numerous occassions, but the alternative of relinquishing military control of many of these areas is far worse (creating a hostile enity right next door).

What this has cost Israel is its loss of conscience. It can not claim democratic values or belief in the brotherhood of man. It can not hold up its head among civilized peoples.
