For the first time in history, an Israeli Arab political party challenged the Palestinian leadership on Tuesday, calling for the immediate dismissal of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
The Balad party, headed by Jamal Zahalka, was planning to officially call for Abbas' resignation at a conference convened especially for that purpose, scheduled for Saturday.
Abbas has faced harsh criticism over recent days following his decision not to ask the United Nations Human Right Council to vote on the findings of the Goldstone report, which concludes that both Israel and Hamas committed war crimes during Israel's offensive in Gaza last winter.
The UNHRC has delayed its vote on the report, as per Abbas' request.
Palestinian sources told Haaretz that Abbas made the decision to delay the vote immediately after meeting with the U.S. Consul General last Thursday, without the knowledge of the PLO leadership or the government of Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, and without any consultation.
Many believe that it was American pressure that led to Abbas' decision not to pursue a discussion of the report in the UN as well as at the International Criminal Court in Hague, as was previously planned.
Members of Fatah, Abbas' own party, have also unofficially asked the Palestinian President to do what must be done to prevent this move from harming the party's standing among the Palestinian public.
The head of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), Ahmed Jibril, openly called on Abbas to "go home," on Monday. The council of Palestinian organizations in Europe also issued a call for Abbas to step down in light of the damage to the Palestinian public's interests he had caused.
Commentators in the Palestinian Authority have said that Abbas' status has weakened greatly in the wake of his decision regarding the Goldstone report, as well as his willingness to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Hamas' recent release of a videotape of captive Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit in exchange for the release of 20 female Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails, also served to weaken Abbas, as his rival party gained popularity.
In addition, Syria announced Monday that Abbas' planned visit to Damascus had been canceled, apparently due to the decision on the Goldstone report.
On top of all that, the Palestinian government of Salam Fayyad convened on Monday and issued a statement containing veiled criticism of Abbas. The statement said that "we mustn't give up the opportunity to go after those who committed war crimes during Israel's attack on the Gaza Strip."
However, only several hundred people attended a rally held in Ramallah on Monday against Abbas' decision, and no calls were made on the Palestinian president to resign.
The criticism that Abbas' decision stirred in the West Bank among the members of the Palestinian Authority was nothing in comparison to the virtual attack it sparked in the Gaza Strip. During a meeting of Hamas' parliament faction in Gaza, senior faction official Mahmoud Zahar called for stripping Abbas of his Palestinian citizenship and putting him, and everyone else responsible for the delay of the UNHRC vote, on trial.
Hamas leader in Gaza Ismail Haniyeh said that the PLO's decision to appoint an investigation committee was unnecessary. "The circumstances here are clear," he said. "Abu Mazen [Abbas] gave the order to his representative. An investigation is only necessary when the circumstances are not clear."

and was before you write about him His history is the most interesting part, responsible for the Olympic Massacres, there's no limitations on the Statutes for Murder The only difference between then and now, he wears nice suits, he's still the same killer
How can Abbas step down when his presidency ended last January? He is not even the elected President. Vichy Palestine will be liberated by Hamas.
Hamas and all the anti abbas factions have revealed their true intentions which is carrying on a state of war by any means, continuing political point scoring against Abbas and Israel by using the Goldstone report even though it accuses them too of war crimes. But they are not bothered because war/ crimes is precisely what they are engaged in, let there be no doubt, and it is a badge of honor for them. The prisoner exchange and civil unrest is one more manifestation of Hamas and anti abbas supporters attempt to eliminate Israel. These anti Palestinians factions are not partners for peace and talks with them is futile. They have only one agenda WAR/crimes. Let the world recognise and the security council take note.
Ever since he took office, Israel - or at least those that mattered in Israel - have sought to destroy Abbas. When Uncle Sugar protested Abbas would be thrown a one finger salute by Israel and Uncle Sugar would be appeased. Now, Israel has succeeded by continuing to smear the man even after the acted against Hamas during Cast Lead. That great old neocon slogan applies 'Mission Accomplished.' Now what?
they have no one to blame than themselves - they beat their chest and act tough but they cannot even clean their own house, can you imagine Arafat EVER doing this? NEVER - this man must be kicked out of RAM ALLAH and sent back to the bahai faith and people where he belongs. This man is a coward.
he thinks that being the "leader" was a big thing, he wanted what arafat wanted, money, he wanted to be cosy with the big knobs, why did abbas halt the report? simple, he was blackmailed, i believe that abbas (as i've stated) was in cahoots with israel over the gaza bombing, he wanted revenge on the people that voted him out. blackmailing abbas is israels weapon, it is done to everyone they want control over, i know i'm right, and in time will be proven so. please print this haaretz, it will show the ones that don't believe my predictions wrong, at least this comment will prove me right.
Abbas has been nothing but an appeaser to Israel. He gives, and gives, and gives...yet has achieved NOTHING in return for his people. Since he came to power the only change has been Israel built more settlements than ever before. Abbas is a weak coward and should step down.
always looking at the effect and not the cause, typical zionist, avrum, this "division" was caused by america via israel to shleve the report, abbas thought he was god and what he says goes, unlike many governemnts peoples, the people are having their say, and rightly so, so this time i WILL put the blame on israel. hamas even though it was in the report that it also was implictated has welcomed it, now tell me avram, who is the fair one here, the one being reported but still wants the report followed up (hamas), or israel the one that was also implicated but doesn't want it followed up (because it thinks it's immune to any of its actions) because it will be internationally damaged?.
You might read the report. It is not flattering to any participant. Much has been made of the accusations of Israeli crimes, but there are also accusations of crimes by the PA and Hamas. Obama clearly wants to see the report quietly go away. Indeed, anyone who has read the report could see why the all would want it to go away. Hamas is accused of ". . . extrajudicial executions, arbitrary arrest, detention and ill treatment of people, in particular political opponents, which constitute serious violations of the human rights to life, to liberty and security of the person. . . " (para 1752) The PA of "The Mission also concludes that the Palestinian Authority?s actions against political opponents in the West Bank. . .constitute violations of human rights and of the Palestinian?s own Basic Law." (para 1753) See what I mean?
That my president would colaberate so much with the US and Israeli interests. And for what? Will this bring us closer to a state- to turn your back on your people? What was Abbas thinking? I support Fatah more than Hamas but if this does not change I will be voting for the Hamas next election. Either them or Marwan Barghouti. Either way, not for Fatah.
The Goldstone report shows Abbas is not a good person, as he has not enough respect of human rights. He should indeed go. It is time for a Palestinian Gandhi or a Mandela. As far as Israeli leaders are concerned it is clear that they are worse, much worse.... Jews of all people should know how they let the Palestinian civilians suffer. Suffer because what they are, non Jewish civilians that live within the borders of great Israel.
What a courageous army, armed with CANONS, MERKEVAS, F16S AND CHIMICAL WEAPONS for mass destruction as controversial flesh-eating WHITE PHOSPHOROUS, against those who have just MICKEY MOUSE FIREWORKS called kassam. What a brave army composed of the descendants of the SHOAH victims against the native Palestinians who are occupied! shame on you, heroes of the 21st century!!!.
As Judge Goldstone has remided us repeatedly, BOTH sides were guilty of war crimes and possibly crimes against humanity. Any prosecution would have to include Hamas's 7,000 missiles fired into Israel, 1,250 Israelis killed by Hamas suicide bombers, plus the widespread use of human shields by Hamas. Do the Pals think they would not also be called to the Hague?
Hey Hal, where does the nearly half-century long occupation as well as institutionalized dispossession of Palestinians rank in weight regarding their near catastrophic situation? Is there anything more sick and racist than modern day colonialism? Apparently only Israelis didn't get the memo that ethnic cleansing is wrong...ironic considering many of their brothers suffered through the holocaust perpetrated by Europeans. Funny how the Palestinians pay the price in the end.
The hypocracy of Palestinian leaders is beyond the beyond. For 60 years they have led their people down the rabbit hole to death and destruction. The posters here that continually bash Israel over every detail are aiding and abetting the murder and misery that Palestinians face year after year. The corruption that is fostered in the territories that grinds the average person into despair is a result of leadership more interested in their personal positions than the wellbeing of their people. Where is the accountability ? Not with the leadership for sure. I would like to see the posters from the neighboring countries start posting in their own newspapers about their governments complicity in harassing and murdering Palestinian refugees under their conyrol for the last 60 years! I dare you!
Abbas caved in to Obama - Obama caved in to "Bibi" in order to save a non-existing peace process charade - which for "Bibi" means to save the settlement enterprise. Both Abbas and Obama acted pusillaminous. I voted for O.- but he better stiffen his spine .
It is obvious that Abbas does not represent the interest of the Palestinian people he is the representative of the Nazi Jewish State in the occupied territories. I guess it?s only a matter of time before the Palestinians wake up and smell the coffee.
show allegiance for the right of the people! Israeli arab in parliament as a duty to protect the arab is much is the israeli. The goverment of Israel only want to protect the Israeli go figure why this is not a surprise....USA protect all the people without distiction
The Goldstone Report details war crimes and crimes against humanity by three parties to the period before and during Cast Lead. Though Israel accounted for the greatest number, Hamas was most culpable, and Fatah (PA) was the lesser of the three in scope and number of violations, it seems that it will be Abbas who will be the only one punished. What irony.
Part of the problem in Israel is that true Israeli Arabs are too afraid of violent attacks by the terror sponsored parties of Balad, Hadash, and the UAL to speak out. The government should start with a basic of Parliament that ALL countries internationally require - a pledge of allegiance to the State by members of the Parliament. The US has it; all Eurabian states require it; Asia, Africa, Latin America - EVERY country has such a requirement. Let the "Israeli Arab" parties declare who they show allegiance to. THEN they can be truly representative.
Large parts of the Palestinian political spectrum are furious at Abbas. Could be he made an unintentional mistake, or didn't anticipate the reaction, but it reveals how vitriolic and deep the divisions are within the Palestinian camp when people even within his own are calling him treason and demanding he stand trial. How can such a disparate rabble function as a state? Hamas threw Fatah people off roofs and knee capped others. Can this kind of political violence with themselves lead to a viable peaceful country of Palestine? No. Hamas provoked the war, and they need to be brought to the Hague alone.
It Is really very hard to. By looking at his actions, I think he is an Israeli or at least their Agent
call to dismiss Abbas immediately over his gesture to the Israeli government. For the first time in history, an Israeli Arab political party challenged the Palestinian leadership on Tuesday, calling for the immediate dismissal of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Balad is not a democratic party and for sure does not deserve to be part of Israeli democratic state. Abbas was elected as President of PA. So di Benjamins Natanyahu Liked. If Balad doasn like results of a demcratic election let them move to Gaza with Hamas. Hamas did not like Fatah party which received 40% of voters votes in 2005.6 A coalition government , brokered by Saudi Arabia, was formed between Hama and Fatah/PLO. Hams waited 6 months and then carried out a bloody Coup d'Atat killing 170 Fatah/PLO supporters. Balad and Hams are made from the same cloth. Birds of feather flock together. Balad go to GAZA. You resemble Hamas in your frame of mind
