17 percent of AIDS carriers in Israel over the past decade were foreign migrants from Africa and east Asia, according to data released by the Health Ministry.

That 17 percent represents 584 AIDS carriers.

The data also revealed that 13 percent of those stricken with tuberculosis were foreign migrants.

Refugees and illegal foreign workers are not covered by the Israeli health insurance system. They do, however, receive identical medical treatment to that given to Israelis in order to prevent the spread of disease.

In 2011, a health survey of foreign migrants will be carried out in order to help determine how health services can be adjusted to the needs of the community.
