Buried Under a Jaffa Street, a 1,500-year-old Industrial Site

Workers carrying out standard salvage digs unearth a site believed to date to the second half of the Byzantine period, where archeologists believe fruit was once pressed to make liquor.

A 1,500-year-old industrial site has recently been discovered under a street in Jaffa by the Israel Antiquities Authority. The archeologists are not certain, however, what the site – on Rabbi Hai Gaon Street in what is now the southern part of the Tel Aviv municipality – was used for.
