A three-year-old girl was crushed to death Tuesday evening in Moshav Nevatim in the south of Israel after a six-year-old relative of the girl played with the gear shift of his grandfather's car and rolled the car backwards. The girl, who was standing behind the car, was crushed and killed.
Earlier on Tuesday evening an 18-year-old resident of Netivot was killed and four others were injured in a collision between a truck and a car near Kibbutz Yad Mordechai.
The wounded – two seriously and two lightly – were pulled from the wreckage and taken by Magen David Adom paramedics to Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon. The truck driver was lightly wounded.
The initial police investigation revealed that the truck driver collided with the car, which was stationary on the side of the road. Eyewitnesses on the scene said, "The car stood by the side of the road and the truck just ran it over. It was a horrifying scene."
Another witness said, "This is the worst accident I have ever seen in my life, there is simply nothing left of the car. The truck split it and turned it into smithereens. I am completely astounded that anyone came out of there alive." The rescue team that arrived at the scene removed the dead driver, an 18-year-old from Netivot, and his three passengers from the car.
An Ashkelon Region Emergency Services spokesperson, Moshe Amar, relayed that, "We had to use all of the special equipment within our possession in order to reach the people that were inside the cars. We did it quickly, because in these kinds of situations, every minute, every second is critically important."
