In Light of Hong Kong Shoplifting Report, Panel to Decide if Frenkel Fit for BOI Chief

Frenkel's candidacy was called into question following a Haaretz report that he was detained at the Hong Kong airport in 2006 for allegedly shoplifting from a duty free shop.

The committee that vets high level government appointments received material from Hong Kong in connection with the nomination of Jacob Frenkel. Frenkel served as governor of the Bank of Israel between and 1991 and 2000, and was recently nominated to replace his own successor Stanly Fischer.
