Israel worried Egypt will allow terrorists to enter the Gaza Strip

Egypt allowed some 85 Hamas militants to enter the Gaza Strip from Sinai at the beginning of October .

By Avi Issacharoff and Amos Harel Tags: Egypt Israel terrorism Gaza

Israel is becoming increasingly worried that Egypt will allow more Palestinian terrorists to enter the Gaza Strip through the Sinai border.

The government and defense establishment are concerned over the closer ties Egypt and the Hamas government are forging in the Strip, as well as Egypt's turning a blind eye to continued smuggling from Sinai to Gaza.

An Israeli government and defense delegation to Cairo recently protested Egypt's allowing gunmen to enter the Strip from its territory.

At the beginning of October Egypt allowed some 85 Hamas militants to enter the Gaza Strip from Sinai after a wait of a few months. The group reportedly included experts in manufacturing bombs, rockets and mortars, who had undergone extensive training in Iran and Lebanon.

The Palestinian media later reported that the group, which entered the Strip via Rafah and the Philadelphi Route, had been allowed to return in exchange for turning over an Al-Qaida activist from Sinai, whom Hamas had apprehended in the Gaza Strip.

Israeli ministers who visited Cairo during the past few weeks have also raised Jerusalem's concerns at meetings with senior Egyptian officials.

Egypt claims that Israeli soldiers are taking part in weapons smuggling from its territory. According to Palestinian sources, dozens more gunmen are expected to cross into the Strip from Sinai, including some who were trained in Iran.

Meanwhile Israel continues to gather intelligence on smuggling from Sinai to the Gaza Strip, which has greatly increased since Hamas has taken over power. Recently released information indicates that no less than 1,650 RPG rockets and some 6,000 bombs have been smuggled into Gaza since the beginning of the year.

Yuval Diskin, the head of the Shin Bet security service, told the cabinet meeting Sunday that an estimated 73 tons of explosives have been smuggled into Gaza through tunnels since June. Millions of bullets for light weapons and tons of potassium, used to manufacture bombs, have also crossed the Gaza-Sinai border.

Palestinian sources in the Gaza Strip have said recently that intensive talks are underway between Hamas and the Egyptian security forces over Hamas' request to allow approximately 100 wounded Palestinians into Egypt to receive medical care. Most of the injured are Hamas members, some of whom were hurt in clashes with Fatah or the Israel Defense Forces.

Hamas Health Minister Bassem Na'im said Monday that Egypt had not yet responsed to the request.

He always runs away to pop up with the same disproven lies again. SOSDD. "the Rules of War changed in the 20th century", not in that area. There's nothing in the HR, GC, UN Charter or anything else that says Israel must give back all the territory it captured. "explain to me it was an Israeli *defensive* war". Well, as long as you keep running away from the real meaning of "armistice", that Egypt violated the armistice, and that returned everything to the active SoW Egypt previously declared, of course you'll whine it wasn't. Poor JB, so full of hate and denial, you're not just a puppy, but a rabid one. Stop foaming at the mouth and join us in reality. Let's start with this one... C: "Throughout history, it has been the rule that lands won in a defensive war are kept by the victor." You do know, don't you, that the Rules of War changed in the 20th century? First with the Hague Regulations 1907, then the Covenant of the League of Nations 1920, then the Kellog-Briand Pact of 1928, then again with the Case Law of the post-WW2 Nuremburg Trials, then again with the UN Charter 1945, and yet again with the Geneva Conventions of 1949? You do know that those changes mean that all the "previous rules thru history" no longer apply, don't you? Now, on to this one..... C: "Israel won the Sinai in a defensive war." OK, Chaim, explain to me how it was an Israeli *defensive* war if that war *began* with an Israeli surprise attack on the Egyptian air force, as well as an armored OFFENSIVE by the IDF against an Egyptian army dug into foxholes???? Or didn't you know that it was ISRAEL who attacked EGYPT at dawn on June 5, 1967?

That day will surely come when you murdering and land-thieving zionists stand toe-to-toe with your calf-worshiping, interest-charging degeneracy which has marked you money-lenders-in-the-temple for 2000 years or more. There is no God but God. How dare you zionist usurpers call the God of all humanity as your own? The God of zionism has another five-letter name, beginning with 'S' and ending in 'n'. Aurum nostrum non est aurum vulgi, Tosefta (Our gold is not the gold of the populace), so with my name. BTW: "ludo mentis aciem" is not "as fancy takes it" but rather "renders it as a game. Egestatem isn't "poverty" but "engendering", etcetera. Perhaps a Hebrew translation would be better. In any case, I won't bore you with Macciavello's "Il Principe" to remind you how putting off one's rival's fumes a bit is essential to put them into irrelevancy. That's what Egypt is doing by playing the Muslim Brotherhood's / Hamas' game. Do you have a Beraita for that?

Walid, I'm not sending subtle messages. I'm clearly pointing out the fact that Israel has made hundreds of concessions and retreats without ever receiving a single benefit. As for Israeli retreats from Judea and Samaria, they are totally wrong too. Israeli concessions and retreats are ALWAYS wrong. That is why we always hear Israeli leaders talk about "painful concessions". Pain is nature's way of telling us we are doing the wrong thing. Israeli concessions are painful for the same reason it is painful to touch a hot stove.

    • Chaim
    • 23.10.07
    • 21:13

Throughout history, it has been the rule that lands won in a defensive war are kept by the victor. Israel won the Sinai in a defensive war. Thus the Sinai legitimately belonged to Israel. Israel should have kept it. The Sinai also happens to be of incalculable strategic, military and economic value. Israel used to have some of the world's most powerful air bases and defensive positions there. Israel ceded the Sinai for a worthless piece of paper. Had Israel kept the Sinai, an Egyptian attack would be far less likely and far easier to defeat.Former Egyptian President Anwar Sadat acknowledged,"Begin has his problems. I got the whole Sinai. He got a piece of paper". Israel has made hundreds of concessions and retreats without a single benefit. The disastrous Sinai retreat is no exception.

No wonder the peoples of the Middle East are living in such a mess after reading this lot of warmongering crap. Have all these years of confrontation solved anything? For the first time the Saudi plan has offered Israel recognition by ALL the Arab states for the exchange of the captured land. Two years ago Iran has also offered to be part of the Arab side. This plan is noton the agenda. Why? Does Israel prefer war to peace? No one can have the cake and eat it, not even Israel.

As for peace, it is hard for Israel to make peace with countries and culture that teach their kids to hate jews. This is a documented fact...muslims teach their kids to hate jews. you cannot deny it, just look in their media, text books, tv etc. How can you not condemn the indoctrination of Palestinian kids into becoming suicide bombers? How can you say nothing about the daily rain of qassams on Israeli cities? Your one sided view paints a very biased picture and world leaders understand that the truth is out there and is seen all the time. unfortunately, people like you don't really look for the whole picture.

The current perpetrators known as Israeli elite will long be dead when that will happen so just why should they care they have received the benefits of such perfidy during their lifetime why worry for the future generations of Israelis let them spill their own blood if they want to relieve themselves of the historical traitorous acts of so called Israeli leadership.

We are talking about Hamas, a militant group, with the potential of exciting their own kind in Egypt. If Egypt wants to pacify people, it would do something humanitarian for Gaza, not blockade it. Again we are dealing with generating bad luck. This time, you have it planned for Egypt. Take a look at the following. You might want to sing the Latin part to the tune of the opening of "Carmina Burana" and have fun too: O Fortuna, O Fortune, velut luna like the moon statu variabilis, you are changeable, semper crescis ever waxing aut decrescis; and waning; vita detestabilis hateful life nunc obdurat first oppresses et tunc curat and then soothes ludo mentis aciem, as fancy takes it; egestatem, poverty, potestatem and power dissolvit ut glaciem. it melts them like ice. Sors immanis, Fate - monstrous, et inanis, and empty, rota tu volubilis, you whirling wheel, status malus, you are malevolent, vana salus well-being is vain semper dissolubilis, and always fades to nothing, obumbrata shadowed et velata and veiled michi quoque niteris; you plague me too; nunc per ludum now through the game dorsum nudum I bring my bare back fero tui sceleris. to your villainy.

Egypt is a friendly country that has the blessing and love of uncle Sam. Yet Egypt somehow allows smuggled goods/weapons, and terrorists into Gaza. Syria, on the other hand, is an enemy, awaiting to have its regime replaced by a US-backed puppet. Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and now Iraq are terrorist bases. This leads to the conclusion, that every CIA-friendly country (regardless of the good intentions of corrupt regime) will end-up somehow harbouring, supporting, or tolerating terrorist activities.

"Israel worried Egypt will let terrorists enter Gaza." My point would be, as I stand up stunned by this Orwellian title, that so-called Israel is the terrorist entity, and that Egypt in its attempt to repatriate Palestinians into Palestine, which anyone in their right mind (other than zionists, of course) might see as an ordinary and natural event. Goebbels himself was the mastermind of this up-means-down language which you zionists have perfected. Just for your information: truth is truth. Lies are lies. Discernment lies in between.

These people live in Gaza. They are Gaza residents and are currently being kept from their families while living in makeshift accomodation in Egypt spending their savings to survive. There are thousands of Gazans stuck in Egypt, including many women and young children, and many of them are living in horrendous conditions. If they are 'terrorists' they should be arrested and given a fair trial. If not, they must be allowed back to their homes and jobs immediately. Israel is simply closing off Gaza to make the lives of the 1.5 million Gaza residents so miserbale they give in, force Hamas out, and accept any orders by Israel and the international community. This is collective punishment.

Israel will have to enter massively the Gaza strip for two main reasons: dismantle the rocket and missile infrastructure that has been build under the guidance of Iran and with help from Hizbullah and Syria and a blind eye by Egypt. The Israeli towns in the South-West must be relieved from daily attacks. This comes as a preparation for the showdown with Iran too, to take one of its pawns out. The second reason is that without weakening substantially the Hamas terrorists and their leadership, there is no sense to negotiate with Abbas because he and his Fatah movement would soon be defeated in the West Bank as well.

The eternal meddling in Palestinian affairs has driven these people, Gazans now especially, to the extent of resigned nihilism. 1.5 million starved due to ancient rockets that rarely kill. REAL Israelis, in larger numbers, are rejecting extremist ideology and the illegal squatter movement. There is simply no reason for the continued onslaught on all things Palestinian.

C: "Some say Israel secured peace with Egypt by ceding the Sinai." No, most thinking people said Israel secured peace with Egypt when it returned the Sinai to it's rightful owners. C: "Israel would actually enjoy a far more secure and enduring peace had we kept the Sinai." No, because Sadat made it clear to Begin that if he didn't get the Sinai back then he'd tool up AGAIN, and he'd go to war over it AGAIN. And if he didn't get it back that time then he'd tool up a third time, and he'd go to war over it a third time. Listen, Chaim, Begin was as far-right an Israeli leader as ever ascended to the Prime Ministership - and not a man to flinch at the thought of spilling blood - and even *HE* understood that Sadat was not bluffing, and if Israel tried to keep the Sinai then it meant tens of thousands of dead Israelis, and the very real possibility that one day the Egyptian army may not only go toe-to-toe with the IDF but might actually crush it.

The secular Egyptian government is under threat from Egyptian fundamentalists from the Muslim Brotherhood. Egypt fears Hamas the fundamentalist. Any success by Hamas will encourage their brethren in the Brotherhood. It therefore stands to reason that Egypts invests some honest efforts in stemming the flow of weapons into Gaza. The one who is most responsible for the situation is Israel itself, in preventing Abbas from negotiating a deal with Hamas that can restore at least border control to PA forces and help stem the flow from the Gaza side. (The Egyptians know what they are doing when they support reconciliation by Abbas and Hamas.) The other violation of allowing Gazan militants to return to their homes in Gaza is simply minor. These militants would have gone home freely had they done it a day before Hamas took over. So now they return home after their organizations do some favor to Egypt. (Hamas surrendered to it an al-Qaida escapee from jail.) This is a one way street. The Egyptians do not allow militants to come and go; they just allowed stranded militants to go home. Egypt should explain to Israel that it has a choice, paying for the militants upkeep as refugees in Egypt or let them home and forget it. It is obvious what Israel`s choice would be.

Egypt suffers for US/Israel failed policy

When Egypt agreed to be a special watchdog on the Gaza border in preparation for the Israeli withdrawl from Gaza, it was with the understanding that Either Israel remains in the Philadelphi Road along the border OR Abbas/Fatah forces will control that border. In other words, there will be another force, on the other side of the border, helping stem the flow of smuggled goods. The US/Israel policy of encouraging a coup against the Hamas government resulted in the fight which ended with the complete Hamas take over. Now, there is nobody guarding the border but Egypt, and the blame goes to them alone. It is as if the US will not guard its own border with Mexico and accuse the Mexican government for all smuggling. It is an unfair situation, and an unfair accusation against Egypt. Egypt should suggest that the UN take over the guarding duty (UNIFIL-like) and return to the pre-disengagement posture, with a demilitarized Sinai. Why should they pay for Israeli and US mistakes? P.S. Egypt`s claims of Israeli involvement in the smuggling, etc., should only be accepted if they have reliable info. No doubt, Egypt has good intelligence sources in Gaza, as Israel does too. Let somebody make a comparison.
