'Israel wants Syria peace, but will not be threatened'
Top Netanyahu aide says PM and FM Lieberman support peace talks with Damascus, without preconditions.
By News Agencies, Mazal Mualem and Amos Harel Haaretz Service Tags: Middle East peace Israel newsIsrael wants to start talks that would culminate with a permanent peace agreement with Syria, a top aide to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said On Thursday, adding, however, that Jerusalem would continue to react against any threats to its safety.
Speaking after a meeting between Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, Nir Hefetz, head of the National Information Directorate in the prime minister's bureau, said the two wished to emphasize their commitment to peace with Israel's neighbor to the north.
Hefetz said that Lieberman and Netanyahu wished to clarify that the "government's policy is clear, that Israel desires peace and to engage in unconditional talks with Syria."
"At the same time," Hefetz added, "Israel would continue to assertively and decisively react against any threat made against it."
Shortly after the PM's message, Defense Minister Ehud Barak relayed a message to Syria from the Labor party headquarters in an attempt to calm tensions between the two countries.
According to a Defense Ministry source, Barak's statements during the last week were meant for Israeli ears alone in order to emphasize the importance of peace talks, and in no way did he insinuate that Israel intended to attack Syria.
Earlier this week, Barak said that the stalled peace process with Syria could bode ill for the future of the Middle East.
Speaking to the Israel Defense Forces top brass, Barak said: "Just like the familiar reality in the Middle East, we will immediately sit down [with Syria] after such a war and negotiate on the exact same issues we have been discussing with them for the past 15 years."
The source said that Israel was operating on several levels to make sure that misunderstandings between the two countries do not deteriorate into diplomatic tension.
The comments by Netanyahu's top aide came after Army Radio reported earlier Thursday that FM Lieberman warned Syrian President Bashar Assad that if his country entered a conflict with Israel, it would not only lose, but his regime would also disintegrate.
"Assad should know that if he attacks, he will not only lose the war. Neither he nor his family will remain in power," Lieberman told the audience during a business conference at Bar-Ilan University.
Following the incident, the Prime Minister's Bureau said that Netanyahu requested cabinet secretary Zvi Hauser to phone all the ministers and request that they refrain from commenting on Syria in the media.
The foreign minister's remarks come after Assad on Wednesday told Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos that Israel was pushing the Middle East toward a new war.
"Our message should be that if Assad's father lost a war but remained in power, the son should know that an attack would cost him his regime," Lieberman continued. "This is the message that must be conveyed to the Syrian leader by Israel."
Lieberman said that Assad's comments "crossed a line" by directly threatening Israel and implying that any future conflict between Israel and Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah would draw Syria into war.
"Whoever thinks territorial concessions will disconnect Syria from the axis of evil is mistaken," Lieberman said. "Syria must be made to understand that it has to relinquish its demand for the Golan Heights."
Lieberman's comments drew harsh criticism on Thursday from a range of Knesset members, some of whom urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to rein him in or dismiss him.
"Netanyahu must stop war instigator Lieberman," said Labor MK Eitan Cabel.

I have been hearing peace for 30 years and I know that when it happens it will be short lived and then all hell will break loose. Daniels prophecy. World desolation. I hope we have another 20 or 30 years. God bless. Blessings in Jesus name
Isaiah 17:1 The burden concerning Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.
...to Aspen, teaching him to ski, and letting him administer Colorado affairs indefinitely...
Overweight, rings under his eyes, facial pallor, tie loosened... looks like he is about to work himself into having a heart attack... maybe it's just distemper.
What can you expect from an erstwhile Soviet nightclub bouncer? Bullying language is second nature to Liberman. Sarkozy was right; Netanyahu must get rid of him at all cost!
You should know that the Prime Minister of Israel just repeated his willingness to negotiate directly with the President of your country. It is Assad who is apparently frightened of peace and of talking directly to Israel, perhaps because he needs a permanent state of war to maintain his dictatorship over the Syrian people. When the leaders of your country are ready for peace through direct negotiations with Israel they will find that it is not hard to come to an arrangement which will be good for the people of Syria as well as for the Israelis.
He is "The Bulldog!" I am sick and tired of kowtowing meeks (meek people) refusing to properly counter challenges to Israel. Let Lieberman redefine the Jewish stereotype. He should be a cultural icon.
He should and could have been indicted months ago. The question is why was'nt it done in time and that was too long time ago? The result of this incapacity to decide is what we have to pay for now.
The unfortunate Democrat Obama inherited the legacy of blood-spattered "massive conflagrations" directly from his predecessors, notably the members of the "illustrious" Republican Bush family. Out of pride and ignorance and miscalculation these deluded right-wingers thought that they would keep entire nations conquered and cowered. Now you reccommend that Israel bulldoze it's neighbors in a similar manner, and to hell with it.... Oye-va-voye to the Israel of your black dreams.
"That's another fine mess you got me into" All photos of these clowns in black and white please to complete the comedy. Actually it is beyond a joke. What has the large majority of sane Jews and Israelis got to say about how stupid Israel is beginning to look on the world stage? Duh!
Syria & Iran occupy Kurdistan. The PM is breath of fresh air responding directly to Assad in clear and most appropriate words he understands. Assad ignores Syria's continuing history of losing to Israel, including the destruction of its non-existent N Korea/Iran nuke faculty 2 years ago. Golan is part of old Mandate and belongs to Israel.
blood thirsty and unbalanced. The Palestinians should give them a medal
Whom exactly does Israel think will replace Assad et al.....The Syrian government may not be perfect..but it isnt islamist and it isnt fanatical...far from a democracy but with a secular base and a relatively diverse demographic makeup (sunni, druze, alawi, christian, yazeedi, sufi, etc...) Israel should be glad that it doesnt have Iraq II or Afghanistan at its borders....get rid of the current regime and I guarantee you the alternative is MUCH worse..not only for every minority in syria, but for Israel too....stop the rhetoric, get down to talking and solve this problem...for all our sakes (ppl on both sides of the border)
They will not give the occupied Golan back, they will continue to fly over illegally and bombed waht they percieve as nuclear sites, and they will continue to be trigger happy and kill anything that blinks at them wrong. Israel go to hell....your in the wrong neighborhood
... which is supported and armed by a Islamist regime (Iran), give hospitality to Islamist Hamas and Hezbollah leaders in chief and helps for his part to support and to arm the same Islamist groups in Lebanon and Gaza. "Secular" Syria is nothing but a puppet in the service of the would-be egemonic power Iran. like his godfather Iran it's more interested in keeping up the military and terrorist pressure on Israel than to achieve any kind of real peace agreement. Lieberman is simply returning to the sender the threat (next war will hit Israeli cities) uttered yesterday by the Syrian Foreign Minister. That seems unfortunately the only language they understand.
You seem to understand very well the way the drill works. 1. Arab dictator/human rights abuser makes bellicose statements about Israel. 2. Libero-fascists say right on! 3. Israel asserts itself against such statements. 4. Libero-fascists accuse Israel of war-mongering. 5. Arab dictator/human rights abuser emboldened by libero-fascist support. 6. Arab dictator/human rights abuser makes bellicose statements about Israel.
for Netanyahu
"Can anyone doubt that the government of Israel is determined to start a war?" Yesterday Spanish Foreign Minister Moratinos stated that the overwhelming impression he got from his visit to Israel was that the Israeli people and government wanted peace. But I guess with all your experience in foreign affairs, you know more than he does.
Assad should know that if Syria attacks Israel he will not only lose the war but also lose his throne. The purpose of driving this knowledge home is to make Assad think twice before attacking Israel and therefore PREVENT the war.
It is about time Israel has a normal government that shows pride and strength and is not easily intimidated.
Great !! Lieberman is spekingthe truth again!! at least one politician who tells the truth and is not politically correct. kol ha kavod!!
I like this guy
Then from the other side of his mouth Lieberman says the Golan Heights is off the table. Lieberman still hasn't perfected double speak yet I guess!.....PEACE NEVER?
Anyone here think Egypt would have got back the Sinai if it hadn`t launched the 1973 war and badly scared Israel before Israel`s eventual victory with the aid of a massive US airlift? Same with Gaza, south Lebanon and the PA territory. Israel withdrew because it was worn down by guerilla warfare and intifada. Anyone think Israel is going to give back the Golan unless it`s badly scared again? I`d love to say Yes to that, but it`s hard to be optimistic with Bibi and his coalition of extremists and opportunists in power.
It's about time Israel told it like it is. Enough of sitting back and listening to the Pali and Syrian rhetoric and propaganda. Israel has to send a strong message to the world that it has the right to defend itself against these thugs.
"Should Syria not be the dictatorship that it is, Lieberman would not need to use this harsh language. Why can`t intelligent people understand that?" Intelligent people don't understand it, because aggressive bullying seems to be the default mode of this government with any foreign country, no matter whether it's a democracy or a dictatorship. I mean Israeli MKs even started called Obama an anti-semite because he didn't immediately dance to their tune. Mind you, it seems to have worked for them. Obama's safely back under Israel's thumb now.
... but Syria has to keep shtum about the Golan... ... the deal has to be concluded in mime... ... so that nobody can understand precisely what is happening... ... and Bibi will dance this debka together with Yvet, hand-in-hand...
realized that Iran has ALREADY INTERVENED She's been busy arming Syria, Lebanon's Hezbollah and Hamas with everything they're been eager to obtain in the way of weaponry Maybe, just maybe, you'll take some of the effort you expend at your keyboard and divert it to catching a flight to where the action has been and taking place, instead of pontificating on matters which you never personally experienced Just the same old Johnboy, pretending he's a player, when in fact he's not on the field or in the grandstand, or in the countries where the play is being carried out
Syria and Iran do not occupy any other People's land. Israel is the agressor that loves land grabbing in the name of "promissed land" and "chosen People" etc.etc. Don't forget, israel is placed in the HEART OF THE ARAB WORLD and protected by its American IPAC+Congress!
Israel is threatened all the time! Iran, Hezbollah, Hamas and Syria just to name a few. So someone in the Israeli government simply told Syria...who supply Hamas and Hezbollah via Iran...with money and weapons, that if you attack Israel you'll lose. If you lose a war with Israel your leadership of Syria may cease. So what's the problem? If Syria can say they will attack Israel if there is another war with Lebanon, why can't Israel say to Syria, you'll lose. We reached a point where all Israeli actions are criticized while their enemies get Carte Blanche. Even in the verbal arena of politics Israel again is denied the right to self defense.
No Golan for Assad Jr. The exception will be when he goes by way of Sadat. He breaks relations with Iran, disarms hezbollah and recognizes Israel as a Jewish state. All demands vis a vis the Pals end as well. No Loopholes! Until then the heights remain in Israeli hands.
Most of you are thinking the same thing. The word, 'Stupidity' doesn't seem to even do justice to what I just read.
What then? This nutter is actually salivating at the prospect of a war with Syria. What if you lose, Lieberman? What if you send all the Mervaka's on a death ride to Damascus and they don't come back? What then, Mr. Tough Guy?
Syria never gave up the dream of defeating Israel. They still maintain the Salahaeldin, and Nasser atitude, to impress the Arab world. They are protecting the Hamas leadership, they are supplying Hizballah with arms, and they are fully cooperating with Iran. Who is Assad fooling? NOT Liberman.God bless Israel, and its leaders.
Any guy that cant tie his tie properly when in public has to be suspect. I mean this is a foreign minister?
when he got into bed with the right wing crackpots so as to ensure that his name was on the door of the Prime Minister's Office. These crackpots are now driving their agenda of an eretz Israel with living space to the East to mollify their core support. Lieberman Ayalon and the rest are drivin Israel towards war to end any aspirations of the Palestinian people for a state.
He's already pissed off the Turks for decades to come, now he turns his attention to Syria. I think he's a fool and Israel is foolish for appointing such a man FM
Take good care Mr Lieberman. At least the Assad regime is a secular one. Topple that one and Israel might find itself with another Islamist neighbour threatening Israel with suicidal martyrs! I know that it is difficult for you but try to think more rationally.
Lieberman is Mister Know All, he is so smart and delicate that he should replace Sharon. All around us in the middle east leaders are praying just for that, it will be Israel's final solution!!!
Sadly enough, the Foreign Minister of democratic Israel HAS TO use the same language as the political leaders in the dictatorship Syria. Lieberman is not speaking to a western, democratic country, with same values as Israel. Sadly, the reality is that Lieberman HAS TO talk with a language that the Syrians understand. Don't be fooled by the western, political correctness, mainly based on fear of aggressive talking/behaviour/manipulation. Should Syria not be the dictatorship that it is, Lieberman would not need to use this harsh language. Why can't intelligent people understand that?
Lieberman knows what he is doing. His eyes are set on the premiership. He knows that the Israeli vote is driven by the hate toward the Arabs. The more he hates the Arabs, the more votes he will get. I would be surprised to see an Israeli politician running for election on a platform for peace with the Pals and getting the vote.
Assad has to be put in his place,he thinks that Iran will come to his aid in any conflict,he is living in the realms of fantasy.
what do you smoke? There's probably a big market for it. You could be the distributor. Israel left Gaza, not because of being "beaten up" as you would like to believe. The communities there weren't attacked. It was a significant drain on resources, but we should have stayed, considering that your mongrel brothers continued attacking. Lebanon? Israel has never wanted to be in Lebanon. The goal was to get the PLO out and that was accomplished.

Libero-fascists accuse Israel of war-mongering. 5. Arab dictator/human rights abuser emboldened by libero-fascist support. 6. Finally, our Moldovan disco dancer (or rather bouncer) have spoken up, Syrians beware.
Back to front there, Levine. Israel is trying to keep the Golan because it loves free land that it looted from somebody else. But it's not Israel's land, never can be legally. And so it will remain a running sore in the region and ensure endless conflict with Hamas and Hezbollah. All because Israel wants LAND. So the bombastic Il Duce Lieberman is daring Syria to try to take it back and recklessly pledging Israeli lives to the battle but it is Moldovan bluster - maybe Israel would lose this time, who knows? He sure doesn't. While his equally cognitively-challenged Zio mate Bibi is pretending to want discussions without preconditions - except for the precondition that Syria can't have the Golan back! The truth about this pair of tricksters we can handle Levine, the lies and bellicose bluster they peddle is another matter.
The problem with closed-minded righties like yourself and lieberman is that you cannot apply the same standards to yourself as you do to others. The Golan is Syrian territory. PERIOD. and any peace deal based on past peace deals will mean they will justifiably get it back! But you only see Israel as the victim and the one prone to damage and the one 'offering' 'peace' and never the other way around. How is what Lieberman saying NOT a threat? you ask why arent ppl talking about Asad's comments? what about the comments of Lieberman in the past? Everyone knows he is racist and not genuine and probably WANTS to go to war and topple Asad. but no ofcourse you blind righties cant even begin to think in those terms. It's all a game of good vs evil in your eyes, where you're the good guys always.
"Assad should know that if he attacks, he will not only lose the war. Neither he nor his family will remain in power," Well, apart for the slight distinction that Syria never said THEY would start the war... Regardless, I think the much bigger flaw is that Lieberman's threats require that the IDF actually win any war between Syria and Israel. Doubtful. Very doubtful. When was the last time that the IDF comprehensively bested any army? 1967, certainly. 1973? Hmmmm, maybe. 1982? Hardly. 2006? Riiiiiight. Of course you did. 2009? That wasn't against an army, guys. You people continue to believe that *this* IDF is the same as the IDF of 1967. It isn't. This IDF can't fight its way out of a paper bag, much less punch its way to Damascus.
Arabs and Jews are same race, related with related language, so they can't be racist against each other. It's ethnic, religious, land conflict, not racism, stupid.
What's the matter with the Jews? An arrogant dictator threatens them with war,an appropriate answer is given and we all start cowering with fear, asking for the "culprit" to be fired.Ari Shavit some time ago, promoted the release of prisoners for the return of Gilad Shalit,on condition that new rules (zero tolerance???)should be applied afterwards,in case of terrorist outrages. Barak has so much to lose that he talks about another war only resulting in another "status quo ante",as he lacks and has been lacking since the shameful and disadvantageous (unnecessary)retreat from South Lebanon, which only resulted in another war front, the gonads which his position demands.Lieberman has the requisites.I shall vote for his party, when I arrive in our beautiful, but threatened land. His is the only language that our enemies understand. What's the matter with the Jews?
Lieberman speaks the truth. Israel offers peace Assad responds with bellicose threats and statements. Why arn't you all talking about Assads comments about Israel? Netanyahu and Ehud Barak all offered negotiations and peace and what they got in return is preconditions and harsh statements. You are not used to someone speaking the truth. Lieberman just states the obvious you threaten us you start a war and you will suffer the consequences.
Very effective. Lieberman would fit right in as a political leader in a dictatorship like Syria but he it is unbecoming for such a person to be Foreign Minister of democratic Israel.
Can anyone doubt that the government of Israel is determined to start a war?
Can you people including Israel understand anything? The article clearly states that if Israel is provoked and only if, should Israel attack! Come one wake up before someone from Syria or any other hostle areas wakes you up without an arm or not at all.Wake up and stop hating! Btw whose side are the people in Israel are on anyway?
Unbelievable, Lieberman responds honestly and truthfully to Assad's provocation and all the liberals act with typical knee jerk reactions. I am proud that in my first Israeli election I voted for Lieberman so as to keep Bibi honest. And he is doing exactly what I hoped for. All you liberals who bend over for dictators and terrorist supporters like Assad are fightng a losing battle.
Amazingly, Mr. Lieberman may be right: a war might indeed topple President Assad's regime. However, the question is, how does our brilliant Foreign Minister know that the regime that would replace Assad would not be more dangerous?
Lieberman shows to Syria the price it will pay if hezbollah or others enemies launch missiles in Tel Aviv or Jerusalem. It was the same situation with Saddam with the lost of its power!
Sure, the next war, i propose that Lieberman goes himself to the front lines and lead the attack,he should send his children too, since he is so excited ! words are cheap...war isn't!
Assad in 2006 was threatening 600 rockets a day on tel aviv during lebanon war. Assad and Iran are the radicals. Now syria is saying any lebanon conflict will involve syria and saying it will move into israeli cities that they were fire rockets at israeli civilians in israeli cities. Goldstone won't ever go after syrian war crimes. Syria takes out a head of state that is ok. Assad was bragging about all he did for hezbollah in building up their bunkers and giving them rockets after lebanon war. Think of the region with sadr and the crazies in iran. iran brags about brain injuring thousands u.s troops. Assad close with bashir sudan. Iran is expanding power in western afgahnistan. Iran diplomats were caught with maps of where to wipe out sunnis in baghdad. Iran and syria went after moderate leaders in lebanon. UN human rights council praises sudan and sri lanka but goes after israel. U.S could stop funding un human rights council but for obama.
Remember that one? Where Bush challenged what his admin called the Saddamite dead-enders to come and have a go at the US occupation army if they thought they were tough enough? 3,000 dead US soldiers later, the US army is penned in its barracks and all set to leave Iraq within a year or two. Israel might just regret Lieberman's big mouth one day.
Syria has give the green light to many suicide bombings and hosts islamic jihad. Syria is so lucky israel never bombed islamic jihad or hamas headquarters in damascus. Assad was behind the start of lebanon war in 2006 for olmert buzzing assad's house. Syria official admitted it. Syria was behind hez attacks on israeli cities with rockets and assad was bragging how israel could be gone one day.
Assad Sr was an old school statesman who shied away from Hezbollah. Assad Jr was never supposed to come to power it was his brother that was trained but died in a car accident. Assad Jr was very close to hezbollah mentoring them in his early years when his brother was in the military preparing for power. Assad Sr refused to give heavy weapons from iran to hezbollah. Assad Jr in 2001 when Sharon took power gave hezbollah massive amounts of rockets and then built up their bunkers and let iran transport more weapons to hezbollah. Assad bragged about how he was behind the killing of the three soldiers that started the 2006 war and he took credit for it. Assad Jr has threatened that israel will disappear before and has said he will keep the iran axis which assad sr knew not to get too close to iran. Assad Jr also threatened the lebanon leader hariri would be broken and soon after he was killed. Syria, Iran killed many moderate leaders in lebanon to get hez veto power.
They only left Gaza and Lebanon after being beaten up... else where.. they're having a field day..
I have come to the conclusion that almost all the leaders in the middle east including Iran suffer from severe Middle Easten Verbal Diarrhea almost as if their statements to the medea was uncontrollable or involuntary like diarrhea. It just flows day in and day out.....
Can peace be made with this rhetoric? In fact, can peace be made with this man at all even if he shut his mouth...!!!!
I predict he goes before Assad
Calling to go to Israli cities. Some folks here can't understand that is impossible to stop this war. Syria is the real problem in the region, and when she goes, peace will rein and Iran will be alone.
Bibi offered livni FM and fully in charge of diplomatic affairs and she turned it down. If Mofaz had gotten 432 more votes he would have been FM and no lieberman as FM. Bibi can't do anything. You need 61 seats. If Kadima won't join and Lieberman's party is kicked out you have no government and new elections won't solve anything. After Livni refused to join government if Lieberman hadn't joined olmert would have stayed as PM and there would have been election after election after election with no business being done in the knesset because olmert only had transitional power. There is no way to form a government without lieberman or kadima. Livni gets no blame but she is the only reason why lieberman is FM. She could have put lieberman out of the picture and yet she made him have all this power. she put politics ahead of country and now bibi is blamed when he offered her the FM job because he wanted a unity government. Livni will cynically win political points
Next time, Damascus.
Lieberman will go because he will be indicted within the next 6 months and he has said he will resign and there will be a new FM. Lieberman would have never been foreign minister if Livni hadn't rejected the foreign minister job with full diplomatic power. Livni was hung up on having the most seats. But that was a canard because the right won far more seats. In a one on one matchup Bibi polled 15 percent higher than livni. It was like 51-35 in a one on one matchup. Livni got labour's votes not the votes from the middle. Quickest way to get lieberman out would be for kadima to have a primary and mofaz to win and mofaz would join the coalition.
The Foreign Minister is one of very few politicians who can be relied upon to tell the truth and nothing but the truth. Assad will be making a big mistake if he attacks Israel again.
Strategic alliance with Iran. Syria is a real problem for the region, using Lebanon as a plataform for attacks will lead Syria occupation in the end, and for irony, was Greater Israel lands too.
What is all about? Our Berlusconi likes Lieberman. Both must have agreed to some business we know nothing about! So, stop dehumilating Mr Bouncer, sorry Mr Lieberman once and for all
Olmert wouldn't let soldiers go past five miles and had them sit in buildings. Olmert wouldn't allow on the first day strikes against buildings where hezbollah leadership was. Olmert micromanaged everything and with a different leader you would have a far different war. Also Olmert blocked funding for military before the war. Now Israel tanks can stop rocket attacks that hezbollah used. Israel with full force could destroy hezbollah. Non nuclear powers should stop messing with nuclear powers.
This bouncer?s big mouth is likely to have very bad consequences for Israel and the rest of the region. He has no diplomatic skills whatsoever, doesn?t know how to talk, I really feel sorry for the Israeli people for having such a clown in the government. Anyway, so in any war between Syria and Israel, this bouncer will run to Damascus :-) take Assad by the nose and tell him that you are not in power anymore :-) Who the heck does he think he is? Is it Israel and its lousy government that decides who stays in power in a sovereign country nowadays? Oh sorry mr slibermonkey, of course we will give up the Golan height on you request :-)??.. I can feel the nervousness in the Israeli government when talking about a war with Syria.
Mazuz was within weeks of wrapping up the case and the new AG will need time to study all the info. Lieberman will be indicted definately this year going by all the stories. Ayalon has played in himself out of the FM position. So either you will have a shalom of likud, mofaz, or a sane Israel Beitaneu MP who will be the next foreign minister. Lieberman said he will resign when indicted and reading the reports it is a certainty he will be indicted.

Only reason why Lieberman is foreign minister is because Livni turned down the foreign minister job with full diplomatic power. If Mofaz had won the kadima primary he would've taken foreign minister and you would have had a unity government. But Livni put politics ahead of country and instead of a unity government said being in opposition is better politics because lieberman would hurt bibi. Without lieberman and livni olmert would have stayed in power and been indicted and it would have a transition government with no knesset power. So the blame has to go to livni.
Lieberman is a destructive force who must be exorcised. Natenyahu must get rid of him...no matter the political cost. Every day he remains in office gives credence to the view that Natenyahu does not want peace. Getting rid of Lieberman will open the door to creating a more moderate coalition and enhance Israel's image.
there is not one rock in palestine that belongs to the carpetbagger, nor in the golan. israel needs to wake up, it cant maintain hostility forever. this will be the zionist downfall
So,we expect Syria to enter into negotiations without preconditions ,but the Foreign Minister expects Syria to learn to live without the Golan. How can Israel continue to have a clown in a position of such importance ? We used to think that Arik Sharon was an extremist !!!
FM syrian words are a invite to this. Stop arming Hizb and Hamas, stop relations with Iran, so you could find a better relationship.
... and a swift WWIII breaks out, chas-ve-chalila... shudder to think what might be left of our small beloved Israel, amongst all the Titans... maybe Yvet would find himself safely back in Moldovia...
Lieberman is a moron, he should be nowhere near the position he holds today..
Kaska...Great comment
Isn't Lieberman meant to be the foreign minister? Not the best diplomat in the world, is he?
There is no evidence that peaceful intent or approaches is a sound strategy to protect Israel's interests or its safety. There is no concept that I am aware of that favors diplomacy over war. Who says that a FM is "supposed to negotiation through diplomacy". Ted sounds like Obama and other deluded leftists who have done nothing in the last 100 years but pushed the world into massive conflagrations and millions of lives lost. A smart geopolitical strategy for Israel, given its neighbors who wish it ill, is to act extremely aggressively, always disproportionately, preemptively, and unpredictably. Only this posture will keep the Arabs confused, cowered in fear, and disorganized.
israeli diplomacy in the old days used to consist of Israel touring its colonised territories and wailing, 'Why won't anyone give me peace?' while pushing the colonies forward. Now while Bibi is still playing the old game of hinting that Israel could negotiate over the Golan, Lieberman simply says, 'Syria must be made to understand that it has to relinquish its demand for the Golan Heights.' Well at least Lieberman's message to Assad is clear. 'If you want the Golan back, you'll have to use guns and tanks and Hamas and Hezbollah and Iranian nukes to do it.' Is that the message Israel's people really want their foriegn minister sending out?
Just like the promise to wipe Hizeballah off the map in 2006, and just like the promise to eliminate Hassan Nasrallah, and just like the promise to wipe out Hamas.. they promise to topple Syrian and the regime. I think the Israeli FM knows very well in the next conflict Israel's very existence in danger and thats why he barks like a wounded dog to scare his enemies.. only problem is they should have made sure they won the 2006 Lebanon war if he intends on using barking a scare tactic!!
This is just nutty, surely it Lieberman would make a better comedian than an FM. And I certainly hope this doesn't mean he has designs on war with Syria. Seriously, I can't have any faith at all in a country with a dangerous freak like that in power spewing mindless cheap propaganda on a constant basis. He should have been sacked already in the past for a number of reasons. That he is still in office and in the news shows how absolutely and completely bankrupt Israel is right now. Now would be a great time to sack him.
fool·ish (f??l¹sh) adj. 1. Lacking or exhibiting a lack of good sense or judgment; silly: foolish remarks. 2. Resulting from stupidity or misinformation; unwise: a foolish decision. 3. Arousing laughter; absurd or ridiculous: a foolish grin. 4. Immoderate or stubborn; unreasonable: foolish pride.
...and a good match to his words ;)
i am sorry but if Lieberman starts this war, may he be the only one who will fight it and finish it.
Were not going to relinquish any piece of our land...grow your wine and hike somewhere else...Its a bit insane that a people so obssessed with attachement to land can be so arrogant and demeaning when it comes to anothers ppl attachement to land..and before some of you spew garabage about whose land it actually is - the rest of us and the whole world isnt confused, so hush up and leave the debate to the rest of us who arent confused and will at least attempt to find some equitable and just comprimise
i do not understand why the FM made such a statement that obviously offends and pushes Syria away. i know that IDF is powerful but i think most people in Israel agree that war is better avoided and we want peace in the land and with our neighbours. Even Barak, the head of IDF, prefers that we will make peace than war. With FM making such offensive speeches, is it possible that the media stop interviewing and publishing that, so that we can prevent further demage to our public relation? As a FM, he is supposed to negotiate in through diplomacy, including to keep Golan Heights as Israel's. By starting fights with every neighbour and being overly prideful, i am worried that the FM is working for destruction of our dear nation Israel? Is he a spy working for someone else?
The disconnect between the messages put forth by Lieberman and Barak show just how ideologically fractured and dysfunctional the Netanyahu coalition really is. This is not a government. It is an unstable arrangement of political quid-pro-quo, part of which is insane (Lieberman, et al), and part of which is powerless (Barak, et al).
As a Palestinian I would like to personaly thank them. They are doing more damage to Israel than anyone else could in 50 years. To be honest, I think Lieberman-Netanyahu is a Hezbollah/Hamas plot to destroy Israels image worldwide and make it easier to portray Israel's right as a bunch of racist donkeys.
