Israel UN envoy denounces Palestinian anti-Israel incitement

State Dept. bemoans PA glorification of terror after Ramallah street named after Hamas bombings mastermind.

By Barak Ravid and Barak Ravid Tags: Hamas Palestinian Authority Israel news West Bank

Israel's ambassador to the United Nations blasted Thursdays a Palestinian Authority decision to name the street planned to house the future Palestinian Presidential compound after a Hamas terror mastermind.

In her condemnation submitted to the UN, Gabriela Shalev said that the naming of a Ramallah street for infamous Hamas strongman Yihyeh Ayyash was "an outrageous act which stands contrary to the spirit of the peace process."

Yihyeh Ayyash, also known as the "engineer," for whom the Ramallah street was named, was the architect of multiple attacks, including a 1994 bombing of a Tel Aviv bus, which killed 20 people, and injured dozens.

Ayyash was killed in 1996 in what was most likely an Israeli assassination, after his cell phone exploded in his Beit Lahia home, in the Gaza Strip.

Shalev's comments came after the U.S. strongly condemned what it called the glorification of terrorists by the PA earlier Thursday, urging Palestinian leaders to curb incitement against Israel.

Speaking to reportes, State Department spokesman Philip J. Crowley t addressed both the recently uncovered naming of a Ramallah street after the Hamas suicide bombings mastermind Yihyeh Ayyash, as well as to statements made by PA officials, condemning the refurbishing of an ancient synagogue in Jerusalem's Old City.

"We also strongly condemn the glorification of terrorists," Crowley said, adding that "honoring terrorists who have murdered innocent civilians, either by official statements or by the dedication of public places, hurts peace efforts and must end."

The State Department official also added that the U.S. would " continue to hold Palestinian leaders accountable for incitement."

Crowley also addressed comments made by PA officials in the wake of the rededication of the Hurva synagogue in Jerusalem's Jewish Quarter.

Last month Palestinians rioted in Jerusalem as part of a "day of rage" declared by Hamas, also protesting the rededication of the Hurva Synagogue in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem.

Fatah official Khatem Abd el-Kader, called Palestinians to "converge on al Aksa to save it" from "Israeli attempts to destroy the mosque and replace it with the [Jewish] temple," calling the synagogue's rededication a "provocation," adding that Israel is "playing with fire."

In his statement Thursday, Crowley said that the U.S. was "disturbed by comments of Palestinian Authority officials regarding reconstruction and refurbishing of Jewish sites in the Jewish quarter of Jerusalem's Old City."

Your question is a nasty, sarcastic accusation. If you wish to comment on US activities in Afghanistan why aren't you intellectually honest enough to do it. The US is not intentionally doing anything to the Afghan people, and you will find no morale equivalency there to justify 42 years of a harsh humiliating Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory. Israel is in violation of more UN resolutions than any country in the world. The Israeli blockade is the worst violation of human rights in the world today. Israel is in violation of articles 33,49,53 and 147 of the 4th Geneva Convention. Breaches of articles of the Geneva Convention are considered war crimes. The US, as a member of a NATO coalition, is conducting military operations against enemy armed forces in Afghanistan with strict rules of engagement in place to avoid civilian casualties. The military objective is to destroy the Taliban, and defend the Afghan people from its harsh rule and sharia law. Save your malicious charges.

Unbelievable hypocrisy,a remarkable display of intellectual dishonesty by a UN envoy. Isn't there anyone in the UN to stand up and explain that Israel has streets named after Jewish terrorists who have killed 100s more Palestinians than the one Israel is protesting. The Israelis travel daily on route 404, named after Menachim Begin (Irgun); and Rabbi Kahane Meir Kahane street, and Stern street, named after Avraham Stern, the founder of the stern gang. Are there incitements by influential Palestinians to compare to these:? In June 2009 Hasidic Rabbi Manis Friedman called on Israelis to kill Palestinian men, women, children and cattle: destroy their holy sites. Rabbi David Batsri called Arabs, a blight, a devil, a disaster...donkeys... we must ask ourselves why God didn't create them to walk on all fours. The answer is, they are needed to build and clean.

Once terrorists, today national heros. A Lehi leader (Yitzhak Shamir) served as Israeli Prime Minister. "According to a compilation by Nachman Ben-Yehuda, Lehi was responsible for 42 assassinations altogether, more than twice as many as those of the Irgun and Haganah combined during the same period. Of those Lehi assassinations that Ben-Yehuda classified as political, more than half the victims were Jews." On 17 September 1948, Lehi assassinated UN mediator Count Folke Bernadotte who had been sent to broker a settlement in the dispute... Three days later the Government [of Israel] banned Lehi as a terrorist organization" - Wiki

...The Disgusting pathetic waste of a human being, Baruch Goldstein, the PA would be bound to state that this is not incitement? I am sure we can agree that both the abovementioned piece of shit is as much a coward and waste of the great gift that is life as the Palestinian version that attacks innocent civilians. So, and THIS SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN, But, the PA now agrees that Israel could, and hopefully never would, name a street after Baruch Goldstein, and PA would have to agree that it is not incitement. what if it was in Hebron on the same streets where this disgusting waste of a human being massacred civilians? Surely we can all take our heads out of ass about now and agree that its incitement

Oh yes, the Irgun not only blew up citizens - and soldiers (we have a peculiar way of referring to attacks on Israeli military outposts as "terrorist attacks", so I guess we can say the same about British soldiers of the Mandate). Not only did they do that, but a couple of years ago the veterans of the Irgun wanted to put a plaque - accompanied by the appropriate state ceremony - on the wall of the King David hotel in Jerusalem to celebrate the event. Not surprisingly, the British government objected and the veterans desisted, although those veterans didn't see the British objection as a protest against the hallowing of wanton murder, but rather as just another example of British anti-Semitism. Double standard anyone?

    CJ BRITISH COLONIZERS????

    • 19:08

I Believe the correct account of history is that the OTTOMANS, desperately wanting to expand into Europe, something it had wanted since defeat in 1683 at Battle of Vienna. So They, THE OTTOMANS, Sided with the GERMANS and in an UNPROVOKED ACTION DESIGNED TO CLAIM MORE LAND THROUGH CONQUEST, the OTTOMANS DECLARED WAR ON THE BRITS. The Brits uniting many Arab tribes ended up mopping the floors out of the Ottomans. Out of curiousity, when Ottomans declare war on the Brits in 1917 (ithink) what would have been the correct recourse and what was the LEGAL RECOURSE Allowed at the time. IF YOU APPLY A 21ST CENTURY MENTALITY TO THE PAST THATS FINE BUT EXPECT THAT IT WILL BE APPLIED TO ALL COUNTRIES AND NATIONS IN WHICH CASE, WELL THE WORLD 5 TIMES OVERS, LESS MANY ABORIGINAL PEOPLES ARE COLONIZERS AND SHOULD DO WHAT??? OR ITS OK BECAUSE THE LAWS DIDN'T EXIST AT THE TIME?

Indeed those British colonizers....Mind you, it's is one of the reasons there are now laws against it..Laws that were in place BEFORE Israel became a state.

Begin, the Irgun etc did not deliberately send suicide bombers onto civilian buses, into cafes and hotels or pedestrian malls in order to kill innocent men, women and children. Their attacks were retaliation against Arab terrorists and their British supporters. Begin and others ceased their activities and over a number of years proved themselves and earned the respect of the Israeli and international community.
