Israel to UN body: Come to your senses on Goldstone Report

Netanyahu: Human Rights Council risks 'legitimizing terror' if it adopts controversial war crimes report.

By Barak Ravid Tags: Benjamin Netanyahu Goldstone report Ehud Barak Israel news

Israel on Thursday urged a key United Nations human rights body "to come to its senses" and reject a controversial report accusing the Israel Defense Forces of war crimes during its military offensive in the Gaza Strip last winter.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu implored the United Nations' Human Rights Council, the 47-member body which commissioned the controversial Goldstone Report, to quash the study's findings.

"Over the years the UN Human Rights Council has passed more resolutions against Israel than against all the other countries in the world," the prime minister said at the start of the weekly cabinet meeting in Jerusalem.

"In the next 24 hours, the council will hold a vote, and if the council decides to adopt the Goldstone Report, it will harm the war on terrorism and it will grant legitimacy to terrorists who hide behind civilians," Netanyahu said. "It will also harm the UN's standing and, most of all, it will be a crippling blow to the peace process."

"I hope that there will be a majority in the council that will come to its senses," the premier added. "If such a majority can be found, it will prevent a serious blow. If not, the responsibility will rest with those who do not come to their senses."

The weekly cabinet meeting was delayed Thursday morning after a fierce debate erupted between the ministers over a proposal to slash ministerial budgets put forth by Netanyahu and Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz.

Prior to the session, Defense Minister Ehud Barak urged Netanyahu to postpone the cabinet vote on the proposed cuts, limiting Thursday's meeting solely to discussions. Barak said the ministers should be allowed to debate the cuts so that an understanding could be reached on the matter.

Is it the will of God for all this violence to be going on? I don't care if it is Israelis, Palestinians, Americans, Iraqis, Afghans.... This war, death, inihilation everywhere is beyond words. All this discord... Just horrible really. I hope that people around me do not have the right idea. i.e. that all of this will NEVER stop. I can not imagine. I worry about every locale, every man, woman, child.

There are no other nations that I know of that are imprisoning millions of men, women and children, depriving them of the basic human right such as water, food, & medical attention. They are not restricting the free movement of these people and they are NOT shooting & bombing them from land, sea & air. Israel is. They might have left Gaza but why lie that they are not controlling who lives and dies in that open air prison that Israel has created. Your argument is tired and old and having seen the images flashed around the world of Israel's barbaric bombardment of a defenseless people and the inhuman blockade that has been in place for the last few years, no one believe yor apology anymore

'Come to your senses on Goldstone Report ' This plea coming in aid of a demand that everyone agree to avoid reading a report whose facts no one disputes. The gist of the argument seems to be that everyone has to avoid looking at what Israel does -- or they would inevitably condemn it. Of course, that's been my experience. Believe it or not, I used to be your average unthinking Israel supporter. Then I opened my eyes. There's a warning there. Never, never look. And never, never think about it. So indeed. Suppress the Goldman Report. The alternative is unthinkable (pun intended).

What part of Gaza is Israel occupying? The facts are that despite Israel leaving Gaza (which turned out to be a big mistake), the arabs lauched rockets at Israeli civilians for 8 years. The problem with this report is it does not recognize this fact. It gives moral equivalency between terrorists purposefully killing civilians and Israel trying to stop them. There is none. Israel like any other nation has an obligation to protect her citizens against terrorist attacks. The only difference is that any other nation would have rightfully used much greater force

I am not Jewish, Goldstone is. He reminds me of the Jews who helped the Nazis in the gas chambers. Israel is facing a huge portion of hostile Islamic humanity numbering billions that want to push her into the sea. Yadah needs to take its own side and not see everyone elses including Britains. Shortly a war will be enjoined of huge proportions that will fulfill many Biblical prophecies.

"Over the years the UN Human Rights Council has passed more resolutions against Israel than against all the other countries in the world" Thanks for reminding everyone that Israel has always been a rogue and outlaw state !! "It will also harm the UN's standing and, most of all, it will be a crippling blow to the peace process." What a lame and pathetic blackmail !! Who seriously is going to buy it ? The peace process is already dead because of Bibi's refusal to stop stealing land while the talks take place. Bibi has won the first of the worst politician of the year. He looks so cornered I fell sorry for Israel. You guys deserve better leadership.

The Goldstone Report addressed the terrorist acts, and condemned them too. So any claim that the report condones terrorism is pure spin. But the REAL damage would be the gutting of the rules for occupying forces, and the responsibilities of the occupying nation over occupied territories, if the UN ignored the report.

UN in danger of legitimizing terror? Yes, that would be the case if it in fact subjects itself to Israel. Is killing hundreds of civilians not just as much terror as the shelling by the Hamas and other crazed organisations? Lebanon, Gaza as the latest examples in a string of bloody pearls. One could hope that Israel would come to her senses!

"Over the years the UN Human Rights Council has passed more resolutions against Israel than against all the other countries in the world," the prime minister" Does the Prime Minister ever stop to ask himself WHY so many resolutions are passed against Israel ?? Perhaps he should realise that Israel is the one who has lost it's senses and the rest of the world can see what is going on. That's never going to happen because arrogance takes precedence over morality and common sense in Israel

To all the anti-semites populating this board (the ones hidding behind Hebrew sounding names). You are not fooling anyone by using "Zionists" where we know you mean Jews. Gaza, Judea and Samaria are Jewish land that will be liberated and there is nothing you scum can do about it because it is G_d's will.

It is Netanyahu who needs to come to his senses, stop begging and tell the world and just as importantly himself and his people, why using phosphorus bombs in built up areas are OK for Israel. Why warning people by telephone and megaphone to take shelter even when there is none is enough to excuse "collateral damage" and exonerate the perpetrators. And how come that a doctor who had worked in Israel and pleaded for us to come to our senses on Israeli airwaves almost daily while mayhem reigned around him, had to lose three daughters and a niece live on our media. Does Netanyahu really not understand the senselessness - and the obscenity - of it all? You didn't do it Bibi, it was Olmert who put in the order. Come to your senses and do the right thing.

How can the Goldstone report harm the so called war on terror when in fact it is trying to put a halt to state terrorism. Israel's conduct in Gaza and the blanket bombing of Lebanon is not only terror, but is also a war crime. Behaving like a mad dog in war is an ingrained strategy designed to frighten its enemies. Israel is learning that such conduct is unacceptable, even in hard fought wars certain civility must prevail and most of all civilians and civilian installations are not to be touched.

It's time that Netanyahu realizes that the world is a place that bad deeds will go punished.. Until Israel comes clean with it's own nuclear program which they have, and until Israel joins the non-proliferation treaty, and the I.A.E.A, like other nations do including Iran, can Israel cast a shadow of doubt unto others. The zionists have become very paranoid in Israel are are jeapordizing world peace and American lives becuase of it. Israel needs to be held accountable for their actions...they are not above the laws of the world court.

Israel's ethnic cleansing of Palestine by mass terror legitimized it long ago. Hamas has every right to mimic the Irgun, Stern Gang, and all the other instruments of the ethnic cleansing of Palestine. Of course, Hamas and all the other Palestinian resistance groups haven't come close to the body count of the Zionists.
