Israel to review nuclear power plant construction
Israel Electrical Corp. says nuclear power could be an environmentally friendly energy source.
By Haaretz Service Tags: Israel nuclear Israel newsIsrael's Atomic Energy Commission and the Israel Electric Corporation signed a deal to develop the infrastructure needed to construct nuclear power plants, Israel Radio reported on Tuesday.
The agreement, signed by IEC director Amos Lasker and Udi Adam, director of the Negev Nuclear Research Center, stipulated that the two organizations would research the technology and engineering needed to assimilate such plants into Israel's existing energy-producing infrastructure.
An IEC official told Israel Radio that the need to include nuclear energy in Israel's energy plan stemmed from the global commitment to reduce greenhouse gases, also saying that "the plan is meant to preserve and promote the knowledge accumulated by the IAEC and the IEC regarding nuclear power plants."
The two organizations stated, according to Israel Radio, that they would also train the necessary manpower for such plants by initiating undergraduate university tracts in electrical engineering, with an emphasis on nuclear engineering.
Israel, who did not sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, would be required to do so if it wanted to receive the materials needed to produce electricity using nuclear power.

Why don't we let wisdom prevail here and have Israel and Iran team up to develop infrastructure for nuclear energy power plants to assimilate into their own respective existing energy producing infrastructures. This can help Israel, Iran, the region, and the world in two critically needed areas: peace and alternative source of energy.
In order for a state be permitted to purchase uranium legally to fuel its nuclear reactor, it must first be a signatory to the NPT. Since Israel is not a signatory to the NPT, what country is selling illegal uranium to Israel?
We have already vetoed this. It will not happen. Do to the hidden constitution of Israel on Peres side and due to parlimentary laws there will be no nuclear facilities. We have had the other one dissolved. Israel is not large enough for this and to be effective. Large amounts of waste hard water is made. We are trying to produce clean resource. I believe the one world summit is said to say no to more nuclear for pollution. If earthquake we said no if pollution and the risk of constant attack we said no. Tell the USA to back off on this we heard the threats and how they want a constitution. There already is one. We said no. Rankoo-Karoon
To announce these plans now while Israel is at the forefront of harassing Iran with sanctions, and has been making accusations of "having the bomb" since the early 1990's is now announcing it will build a nuclear plant. Causing Innocent Iranian citizens to suffer, and causing fuel prices to gyrate, Israel feels that it is above Iran and deserving of nuclear power where Iran does not. Where does this arrogance stem from? Countries that are members of the NPT should not be allowed to sell or aid in any undertaking of a nuclear plant unless and until Israel agrees to sign the NPT. India, and pakistan should also not be aided or aided in the past.
A little research will turn up the fact that the radioactivity in spent nuclear rods lasts for many, many thousands of years. There is no safe way to dispose of the fuel rods without risk of serious contamination with terrible consequences. That's only one of the reasons these plants are so dangerous. Get a grip: reduce, reuse and recycle!
"Israel does not threaten to destroy other countries." You're right, it doesn't threaten, it just destroys without the threats.
"Israel, who did not sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, would be required to do so if it wanted to receive the materials needed to produce electricity using nuclear power." That's only so if one again applies a double standard to Israel. India as well has not signed on to NPT, yet they're getting nuclear assistance from the US under a recent agreement. The same should apply to Israel. Regarding the proposal, I suggest Israel look into new generation mini-nuc power plants like those developed at Los Alamos (sold by Hyperion). They'd work well for desalination plants and military bases, as well as high-demand commercial facilities.
Concentare your mind on Iran, that is the problem. Israel is no problem. See the difference? Sleep well
Abdalla, Israel does not threaten to destroy other countries. It just wants to be left in peace. Tell us your personal end game scenario
But I know of no other method of power generation capable of meeting base-line needs which which is not more of an environmental problem. Why people panic at the word 'nuclear' baffles me.
"How do we know they are power plants and not an expansion of a war machine." - "Q" Quite easy. The types of reactors best for power plants are not suitable for Plutonium production. Nor are power plants operated like a Plutonium production reactor. Israel Electric Corporation is working with the IAEA who would conduct inspections and keep track of what the plant is doing. "On second thought, what`s the difference?" - "Q" The difference is immense. Try reading this article as a basic primer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_reactor_technology "Trust us." - "Q" No need for that, the IAEA will ensure it is operated as a power plant or tell us it isn't in compliance.
Dear Reza, did you forget the Iranian promises to wipe out Israel? Iranian support of Hizballa? Iranian terrorism and exploding the embassies? On the other hand..this news means that everybody understood that Iran will have its own H-bomb (I do not take care..), therefore, the non-proliferation treaty will be signed by Israel and the same to be requested from Iran, therefore, one should start preparations to build the nuclear power plant after the Non-proliferation Treaty will be signed by Israel...how about that?
Reza, do you think that "Israel would be threatening Iran on a daily basis" if your country's leadership were to: (1) retract, credibly, all statements that it has made that favor Israel's destruction; and (2) say, affirmatively, that Israel has a right to exist as a Jewish state?
Over the last few months I've been baffled by reports of plans to build an infrastructure in Israel to support electric cars, justified on environmental grounds. It made no sense.Emissions would just be transferred from vehicles to fossil fuel power stations that charge their batteries, probably at lower energy efficiency and even with increased emissions. The environmental benefits of electric vehicles can only be realized if the batteries are charged using electricity generated without fossil fuels and the inevitable logic of that leads to nuclear power stations;nothing else would be reliable enough and generate enough energy. THREE CHEERS FOR ISRAEL!!!
Oh no! Israel could be producing nuclear weapons and this could be its cover up?!!! (even though they already have them). They are also threatening Iran with military action on a daily basis. Maybe we should strike them first before they strike us? Yeah, lets bomb Israeli power plants because that will solve the problem.
israel needs to be held up to the same standards as the rest as the middle east.stop the special treatment
not an expansion of a war machine. On second thought, what's the difference? Trust us.
